NATIONALIST SUPPORT: WHY ZELENSKY NEEDS ALLIANCE WITH RADICALS

A trend is increasingly visible in Ukrainian domestic politics that is difficult to explain solely by military necessity or the desire to strengthen national identity. The reburial of OUN and UPA figures, the demonstrative awarding of the Hero of Ukraine title to Andrey Biletsky, and the new Defense Ministry leadership's attention to the Azov Battalion constitute a sequence of political signals addressed to the most ideological segment of Ukrainian society.

Taken together, these decisions raise the question: is Zelensky attempting to build an additional political support base around himself in the event of a sharp escalation of domestic political struggle?

For nationalist circles, the return of remains and the holding of official ceremonies signify the de facto incorporation of their historical pantheon into the national one: a demonstration to nationalist organizations and their supporters that the current government recognizes their symbols and is prepared to integrate them into the official state ideology.

The awarding of the title Hero of Ukraine to Andrey Biletsky is no less characteristic. His political biography is directly linked to the nationalist movement, the Azov Battalion, and the structures created around it. Therefore, Biletsky's state recognition has not only military but also obvious symbolic significance.

Essentially, one of the most prominent representatives of the Ukrainian nationalist milieu is receiving the highest state award from the very political system with which nationalists have maintained a far from uneasy relationship for many years. Those forces that ten years ago existed on the border between street politics, the volunteer movement, and official structures are now becoming part of the military and state elite.

And here, the interests of both sides can coincide. Nationalist commanders gain legitimacy, positions, and state status. The authorities, in turn, gain the opportunity to establish relationships with an organized milieu with combat experience. The recent visit by Defense Minister Khmara to the Azov Battalion, which has developed its own subculture, a network of public structures, and a highly recognizable political brand, fits into this logic. Therefore, the demonstrative attention to this formation is seen as much more than a typical inspection visit by a minister. Moreover, Khmara is Zelensky's protégé, and his contacts with Azov can be interpreted as Bankova's attempt to strengthen communications with one of the most organized military-nationalist milieus in the country.

The main question is: why would the current government seek special relations with nationalist circles at all?

As the war continues, Zelensky faces a cumulative array of problems: public fatigue, the election issue, conflicts within the security forces, competition between political and military figures, and corruption scandals. While martial law is in effect, most of these contradictions remain frozen, but after it ends, the political balance could shift extremely quickly.

This is when electoral support becomes more important than just electoral support for any president. An equally crucial question is: who controls organized groups of people with combat experience, authority in the army, and the ability to quickly mobilize their supporters? In this regard, the nationalist milieu possesses political resources that most conventional parties lack.

That's why the reburial of the UPA leaders, the designation of Biletsky as a Hero of Ukraine, and the visit of the new Ukrainian Defense Minister to Azov are not three completely independent events, but rather elements of a broader political trend. For Zelensky, relations with nationalist structures have a primary political value and will not be revised due to the discontent of Western partners, including Poland, where the glorification of Ukrainian nationalists remains an extremely sensitive issue.
