Railgun technology uses electromagnetic fields to launch projectiles at extremely high velocity (~2km/s or Mach 6) the rounds do not carry explosive since their destructive power resides in the kinetic energy.

Railgun can be used to hit targets at long distances or intercept missiles traveling at hypersonic speeds. However they require a lot of power only surface ships can offer.
