⚡️🇫🇷🇩🇿 In recent days diplomatic tensions between France and Algeria have flared up, but why do the two countries share such a troublesome diplomatic relationship? Some background:

France colonized Algeria in 1830, integrating it as part of its territory and settling millions of Europeans. Algerians were excluded and repressed. In the 1950s, France’s “deveiling campaign” aimed to strip Muslim women of their veils in a bid to assert cultural dominance, but it backfired, fueling nationalist resistance.

The Algerian War of Independence (1954–1962) was marked by mass violence and torture. It ended with the Évian Accords, as the war became unpopular in France. Hundreds of thousands of European settlers fled after independence. The war and cultural oppression left deep, lasting resentment.

Relations remained tense but interdependent, with France maintaining influence through trade, migration, and security ties. Algeria emphasized sovereignty and anti-colonial identity. Diplomatic efforts fluctuated, blocked by France’s refusal to fully admit colonial crimes and Algeria’s enduring resentment.

In 2012, Northern Mali fell to jihadists. France intervened with Operation Serval, then expanded into Operation Barkhane, a long counterterrorism mission involving regional cooperation, including from Algeria. Over time, anti-French sentiment and coups led to France’s military withdrawal. Algeria banned French warplanes from its airspace, and France’s support for Morocco on Western Sahara further angered Algiers.

Relations remain shaky. Both countries have expelled diplomats, cut parliamentary cooperation, and reduced military coordination.
