A book for a pregnant woman
Hello all,
I’m currently 20 weeks pregnant (first pregnancy) and anxious about many things. I’m pretty politically aware wich is not a great thing to be in these times.
I’m looking for books to help me take my mind off things but nothing violent. And nothing looking for books about pregnancy or parenting necessarily.
I usually read fiction (contemporary), memoirs, and non fiction. Not a fan of sci fi and fantasy though…
Thank you!

Romance books where MMC doesn’t meet FMC immediately but watches her from a distance?
I want a book where MMC may meet FMC at his job or a store, not immediately exchanging info and sees her regularly. Yearning and pining for her while not interacting for her. Points if he starts noting her schedule so he can be around when she shows up.
Anything where MMC has to wait before approaching FMC, but is drawn to her inexplicably. Something about being “in love” vs just sexually charged for her. But spice is necessary!

Book recommendation!
Recently just read good material by Dolly Alderton and loved it. Can anyone recommend a similar book about going through a break up/ heart ache?

Great books found while roaming the library and not from lists or recommendations?
Curious to hear what authors and books other readers have found out in the wild (haha!) by searching their library’s shelves and not with the assistance of online recommendations or searches.
I still think a hidden gem in the stacks is a wonderful find. One of my most recent ones is historical fiction author Samuel Shellabarger, whose work contains political intrigue, spying, betrayal, and with some swashbuckling adventure thrown in. Very glad to have found him and surprised I don’t see him mentioned by others.
What have other readers found on their own and that they would recommend?

Book recs for someone who reads cookbooks
I like cookbooks that are also a bit memoir-ish or that give you more than just the recipes. I’ve read everything Bourdain ever wrote, but I’m not sure where to go next.
Thanks, all!

Give me your strange medical books!
I’m not in the medical field at all, but I find a lot of it fascinating. I tend to say I got my medical degree from Google and studied under Dr House.
I’ve read a few nonfiction medical books and I want to see what else is out there. Some books I’ve read and loved have been:
The Butchering Art- Lindsey Fitzharris
Everything is Tuberculosis- John Green
Hot Zone- Richard Preston
My trip to the Mütter Museum counts as one of the best experiences of my life. So medical curiosities are also welcome. Thanks in advance.

Cosy 90s-set books?
Feeling nostalgic for my 90s formative years. Any good cosy books set in the decade? Any genre, but no kids books.

How to be less annoyed by people
I live in the city and people generally have different values than my own, regarding social life and behaviour. I frequently get very annoyed/frustrated/angry by people who are rude, inconsiderate and don't follow general rules. Besides going to therapy, what is a good book on how to be less annoyed by misbehaving people? Thanks

Suggest a page-turner beach read for a 30 year old man
I am planning my vacation on the shores of Lake Michigan with my family and I need something that will keep me turning the page.
I am pretty open to anything other than war/military stuff. I don’t mind some romance or drama but probably wouldn’t want a mystery (unless you think it’s really worth it).
Suggest me a book!

In a reading slump - suggest me a captivating short book or novella!
Hi there, I tend to lean towards science fiction, fantasy, and horror. I’ve been in a reading slump for what feels like an eternity and am looking for something within these genres that’s super exciting to just give me a win.
Any and all suggestions will help!

Suggest me a light hearted sci-fi romance book.
I just finished reading This Is How You Lose The Time War and I loved the slow build up of their feelings for each other. Just thinking about their letters to each other and how genuinely heartwarming their love feels is giving me butterflies. I'm not necessarily looking for time travel books, but I loved the little sci-fi scenes that they incorporated into the story.
I haven't read any romance books recently (except for Every Day) but here's some books I've read recently:
Flowers For Algernon
Animal Farm
Predator Cities
How To Survive Camping

Suggest me a book with a realistic depiction of a parent with a young child or baby
I’ve read a few books recently that will have a major character who’s a parent of a very young child. That child inevitably either doesn’t talk like an actual little kid, or they are babies or toddlers that happen to be taking naps whenever convenient to the plot.
What’s a book where there’s a young child or baby that is more believable? I tend to read mysteries but up for anything. Most recently I’ve read Girl on the Train and almost done with the first “Vera Wong” mystery book.

I'm looking to explore socio-political criticism, but I'm not sure where to start
Hey folks,
Over the past few years, my political views have shifted dramatically. I went from what I would have called a left-leaning moderate to someone who is highly critical of everything the United States has ever done, capitalism, and basically good old American values.
I'm a proponent of universal basic income. Thing is, I haven't actually read much around the subject of socialism, and I'm trying to shatter the last lingering attachments of national pride from my upbringing. I'd appreciate suggestions on where to begin. I want to better my understanding of my own views.

Suggest me a book based off my tastes
Hi! I’m a bit of a picky reader, but I want to get into reading a lot more. Ok genres I like: literary fiction, science fiction, coming of age, and magical realism (but not too far stretched). Dislikes: fantasy and romance.
My top five favorite books are: Norwegian wood, Klara and the Sun, My brilliant friend, Sea of Tranquility, and Panchiko. I’m currently reading: 10 things about Soace by Stephen Hawkings, Martyr!, East of Eden, and Piranesi.
I love character driven novels such as Panchiko or Tomorrow, Tomorrow, Tomorrow, and don’t mind a more involved plot for science fiction. I don’t know if this is enough information, but please feel free to help in the comment section!

What's the one book you wouldn't rate the highest, but like the most?
Forget recommending it to others, or rating the book "objectively", what's the one book you just enthusiastically enjoyed the most regardless of whether you think others would like it or not, regardless of any objective quality you think it has or not?

Whimsical action without peril for 7yo
What novels/books should I read to my 7 year old daughter?
She loves:
* nearly all of the Roald Dahl kids books (Charlie chocolate factory, Charlie great glass elevator, Matilda, James and giant peach, the witches, fantastic Mr fox, the twits, magic finger, giraffe pelly and me, esio trot)
* Dav Pilkey (Dog Man, Super Diaper Baby, Cat Kid Comic Club)
* InvestiGATORs and Agents of SUIT
* Barb the last Berzerker series
* poetry of Chris Harris (my Head has a bellyache, I’m just no good at rhyming)
* poetry of Shel Silverstein (where the sidewalk ends, don’t bump the gump)
So I think she likes irreverent and whimsical action. But she is easily scared.
These books were too perilous/scary:
* The BFG
* The secret of Platform 13
* Emmy and the Incredible Shrinking Rat.

I read to my 7 year old every night and I'm looking to update his bookshelf, any suggestions?
I read 2 shorter stories (Robert Munsch, Bad Seed, Sour grape, Etc) and I also read some of a chapter book afterwards. Now that he's getting older, it's time to add some new stuff and I would love some ideas. TIA!

Horror novels for beginners?
I’ve never read anything horror before but seeing as Halloween is fast approaching I want to try reading my very first. Looking specifically for books that could ease me into the genre as a beginner. Preferably nothing based around/touching on medical stuff or diseases if possible.

Quick! I’m at a book store before going off grid for two weeks. Can you suggest a good mind bending book that’s not House of Leaves?
As the title says. Doesn’t have to be long. I’m a slow reader.
Edit: thanks everyone. Grabbed a few of these. Lake and campfire reading shall soon commence.

What are you reading right now?
And what is one notable thing or what do you like/dislike about it so far? I’ll start - Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt.
Admittedly this is from the back cover, not the story itself, but I didn’t know that it was on the NYT Bestseller List for four years. I knew about the book but was just trying to get through my “required reading” during that time.

Raw, visceral books seemingly born from pure emotional wreckage?
Books with a nearly undetectable yet undeniable subtext of emotional devastation, or the kind of helplessness only someone in ruins can feel. Like the author had no choice but to write this gutting and unhinged (optionally graphic, rather sick) tale to survive their own pain. The kind of book where you see your suffering metastasized through the story and feel number than before.
Preferably something fictional to numb the real life aftermath of romantic love, capturing the denial, heartbreak, or vain longing. Mostly the helplessness of it all.
Won’t mind if it’s funny in places, too. Thanks.

What is your favourite time travel book?
Please suggest some time travel, time loop books? I love the genre
Some of my favourites are-
Woman on the Edge of Time by Marge Piercy- an amazing book about a working class woman in 1970s New York. She is imprisoned in an asylum and time travels to a dystopian future and a utopian future. This is the best utopia I have ever read and William Gibson credits Piercy as creating cyberpunk with the dystopia.
Life After Life by Kate Atkinson- a beautiful and gut wrenching story of one woman who lives her same life again and again, getting second, third, fourth chances at changing fate.
The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley - a funny and accessible story about the mundane side of time travels, the details of how hard adjusting would be. Part spy thriller, part romance, part societal philosophy.

matter of fact book on pornography
i'm looking for a book that will give an overview on ideally the entirety of contemporary porn production, consumption and distribution, both paid and amateur/hobbyist, both legal and illegal. i'm looking for more a sociology book, not politics or polemics, with numbers, percentages, lists. i'm not interested in discussions about our brain on porn or whether porn can be feminist and so forth.
