best books for a coed, multigenerational family book club

I need your help!

I'm part of a coed family book club with members from 25-70 years old, and my turn to pick a book is coming up. We tend to read historical, contemporary, and literary fiction (but nothing too highbrow). We've also picked up a few memoirs, nature & historical nonfiction, thrillers, and murder mysteries too. We haven't read a lot a lot of super speculative stuff, but a book with some light speculative elements isn't out of the question.

Anything in any of those genres would be great! I'm particularly leaning toward something more fun/light-hearted because we've read a few heavier books in a row. But all suggestions are welcome!

Here are a few past reads that went over the best:

Finlay Donovan Is Killing It by Elle Cosimano

James by Percival Everett

Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand

The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt

The Wedding People by Alison Espach

Thanks!

Finally read (and loved) The Goldfinch. What should I read next?

I listened to the audiobook of The Secret History by Donna Tartt as well (love her voice). The last book before these two that I really loved was Tomorrow, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow.

Some commonly recommended books that I’ve read recently, and just found ok: Demon Copperhead, Weyward, All Fours.

Not terribly picky on genre, but I do like a story that grabs you in the first chapter.

35F, childless, separating from marriage after years of emotional abuse, struggling with chronic illnesses that may jeopardize my independence and ability to be outside. Not sure if I need catharsis or just a nice escape. Suggestions?

Something with a philosophical theme on meaning of life or fruits of pushing past struggles would be nice.

A book that you love but NEVER recommend because you think it’s too bizarre or confusing

You’re scared because you feel like no one else will vibe with it. Let me be that person. I wanna read the weird stuff. Not gross weird, but like things that don’t fit into genres, that have odd plots/formats, made up universes and words, nonsensical or satirical writing styles, anything.

Looking for a book that makes me enjoy life

I’ve been through my own cancer at 36, my mom’s cancer (much scarier than mine), and am generally an anxious/depressed person. The world right now feels so broken and I’m just getting through my days going through the motions. I want something to pull me back in and not feel blah anymore, and perhaps see the beauty in life again.

Edit: a great audiobook would be awesome!

Looking for a rec for an audio book to listen to with my 13 year old daughter (big Harry Potter fan).

She would rather be on her phone spilling tea with her friends but this is a tradition for us on our drives. Last trip we did the Diary of Anne Frank. She liked it but didn’t love it. Before that we did Tom Sawyer. I don’t think she cared for that one but her brother was with us and it was his choice. She really enjoys fantasy and has read all of the HP books several times. It’s almost hard to get her to read anything else. I think we need something more up her alley and less of a “classics” vibe. Always on the lookout for a great female protagonist. She read the first Amari and the Night Brothers and I thought she’d be excited about the sequel but she didn’t really get into it. She has dyslexia so reading has its own drama surrounding it.

Blind mmc book needed!!

Hello, beautiful people!!

I recently watched Jane Eyre for the 10th time and the ending made me want to read a romance/dark romance book with a blind mmc. Bonus points if he's a teacher(don't ask me where that came from). The pov can be from both of them or from her perspective only.

Thank you so much and please help me find this type of book!!

Fiction where language/linguistics is part of the storyline

I recently read a crime novel by Brianna Labuskes in which the main character is a forensic linguist. The book itself was ok, but as a language geek, I really enjoyed the details about how linguistics can be used in police investigations.

I'd love to hear recommendations for other books where language/linguistics plays a significant part in the storyline. It doesn't have to be related to crime, I'm open to most genres, but I want the setting to be realistic. I'm not really interested in fantasy books about language-based magic systems, for example.

Needing Engaging, Approachable and Well-Written Books for the Cancer Journey I'm Facing

Hi all, I am starting chemotherapy tomorrow a rare and aggressive type of breast cancer. I'm an avid reader but since dealing with these medical challenges and getting my diagnosis I've been having a hard time getting into a book.

A positive in a shitty situation is that I'm going to have a lot of time on my hands for the next year or so to read, and I'd love suggestions for engaging, exciting but not too serious books, fiction or non, that are well written. I typically read memoirs and nonfiction but many of them feel too heavy right now. I'd love some suggestions for engaging series I can really dig into.

Here are some books I've read and loved that are in the same vein of what I'm looking for:

- Game of Thrones
- The Expanse
- The Ministry of Time
- The Invisible Life of Addie Larue
- The Women
- The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

Need a book to read aloud to my high school students

I teach a career education type of class and we have a lot of down time. I’d like to read a book to my students. I don’t want it to be anything they might be reading in other classes, so none of the typical titles. Maybe something about a kid graduating high school and moving on in life. Going off to college or embarking on a career. Something mostly positive, nothing terribly tragic, nothing sexual. Thanks in advance!

Books that read well as a set/pair

Earlier this year, I happened to read “Cloud Cuckoo Land” and then “By Any Other Name” back to back. I enjoyed that both were sort of similar in their stylistic choices (telling two “timelines” of the same story) though they weren’t exactly thematic copies.

Does anyone have a recommendation for books to read like that? I’m looking more for a rhyme between the books in terms of the method of story telling, rather than exact themes or content

Books that disturb your soul

I've tried many horror novels, lots of Stephen King & some indie, but none of them do it for me. (The Shining did get me a little. I dont remember why tho.). I just finished Harvest Home after a comment I saw recommending horror books. The way they described it I thought I would be ruined forever. I dont want to offend anyone, this is just my useless opinion but, what a waste of time.

So maybe not necessarily "horror" genre but any kind of book that disturbed you & stayed with you forever/awhile. For me, that was Lolita. I couldn't even finish it / a single chapter. I felt sick with myself. I know lots love it & I think nothing of it. But that's kind of the vibe i'm going for. I want something so disturbing I have to force myself to finish it. Any genre. But please nothing like what i've just previously stated. I've read Trafficked by Sophie Hayes & The Little Prisoner by Jane Elliot. No more of that. Something beyond that.

I just want to understand how a book can be scary.

Please recommend a book you’ve read in the past 12 months that you loved.

I saw several people on different social media platforms adding books to a wheel, and then letting the wheel decide which book they read (with some ground rules). I want to try this as well! If I get enough recommendations, I will read one randomly chosen book per month for the next 12 months.

So, please recommend a book you read in the past year or so that you absolutely loved!

Please include the genre as well so I know what I’m getting into. I am not going to make restrictions for genres or subjects even though there are some that I like better than others.

Book with main character who is a teenager or senior citizen

I'm doing a monthly book challenge. The prompt for August is a book where the main character is a teenager or senior citizen. I'm at a complete loss as to what to read.

I tend to read bestseller-type books or mysteries. I dislike fantasy/romance. I currently cannot handle books where children die. I prefer books that are slightly older, so there won't be a long wait for it through Libby.

Books like "Over the Garden Wall"

Hello!

I love reading posts here and posting here. I have found so many great reads because of you all. I am here asking for books that have a similar vibe to "Over the Garden Wall" or maybe even "Gravity Falls' or "Adventure Time" or the "Amulet" series.

I particularly like the adventure type vibe in a fantasy world. Over the Garden Wall has an uneasy and strange feeling to me while still remaining whimsical that I would love to see replicated in a book. Gravity Falls has a similar feeling.

I'm Looking For an Exciting Historical Fiction Book with a Complex Story

It doesn't need to be historical fiction, but that's what I generally like.

I want to read a read a historical fiction that's well written and insightful, meaning that the author has their own unique style and prose. Preferably thrilling with any type of exciting plot. If it doesn't have any that's completely fine as long as the book is well written with great characters that interact meanigfully to progress the story in a clear way—similar to classic russian or french authors. The atmoshphere should also be unique and well developed. The plot itself should be complex and well thought out too. To help out here are some books that I particularily enjoyed (THANK YOU ALL!):

S+
The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
S
The Brothers Karamazov by Dostoevsky
War and Peace by Tolstoy
A
Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky
Shogun by James Clavell
B
The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas

Favorite lesser/unknown children’s books

There’s a trend, now, for at baby showers and birthday parties to bring a book instead of a card. The problem with this, is that you end up with several copies of each best seller. Not the worst problem to have, if you have destructive kiddos like I do.. but it would be nice to have some more original books to add to their “library”.

I tend to gift Can’t You Sleep, Little Bear? By Martin Waddell, as it was my favorite bedtime story when I was a child, and I have yet to meet anyone who has heard of it.

What are some of your favorite books from childhood that no one else seems to have heard of?

Emergency Request: audiobook for family road trip to see dying relative

Hi all -- my family is leaving tomorrow to drive 8 hours to see my aunt who has stage 4 cancer. We're trying to get there before the hospital performs a treatment that has a high likelihood to just kill her. So, needless to say, it's a rough time and I'm struggling for ideas that fit the mood & tastes of me and my parents.

I'm in my 30s and read a ton of mainly fantasy & sci-fi. Parents are both in their 70s are not big readers at all. I think Dad mostly has read historical non-fiction and memoir type of stuff (classic "Dad" books!), but I think they'd be open to most genres. I am, however, NOT going to listen to romantasy in the car with them, LOL.

Our last trip, I checked out "Educated" from Libby on a whim because I thought it would be an interesting memoir with kooky cult stories. It turns out it was mostly "trauma porn & child abuse, the book(TM)". It was interesting, but definitely too heavy a subject.

Does anybody have family-friendly audiobook suggestions that will keep us awake for a long drive? I will try to check out a few options from Libby, and honestly, thank goodness for libraries!! Thank you all so much :)
