I want to read a book where magic is interesting
Most books that feature wizards or magic have very straightforward magic systems that just do stuff. I want to read a book where magic and spellcasting is a more of a feature and not just a tool to fight with.

Books that hooked you in chapter one
Suggests me books that hooked you from chapter one, I've been struggling to commit to books and always leave them unfinished lately so I need something to get me out of this. Extra points if its a relatively long book

In a book rut after some great reads. I heavily prefer nonfiction. But enjoy faction and at times fiction. No romance novels. Going to the beach and need a good recommendation
Please suggest some of your favorite nonfiction books you’ve ever read. I also love a good auto/biography. Thanks!

Quick Question for Fellow Book Lovers 📚✨ When you do decide to buy a book — do you usually go for:
Paperback / Hardcover
Kindle (eBook)
Audiobook
And why? I'm curious what format you enjoy most and why it works for you — comfort, price, portability, vibes?
Personally, I love the feel of a physical book but audiobooks save my life on busy days.
Would love to hear your thoughts!

I badly feel the need to read something essential for human existence ?
Unluckily I stopped reading books on literature long ago due to my bad health and a broken marriage. I didn't feel interested in reading anymore but presently I feel like something in me craves for some good literature. I love to read things about philosophy, spirituality, psychology, human life... Last time, I read books like Sophie's world( jostien Gaarder) and The Forty rules of Love( Elif Shafaq). I really want some best suggestions- Book/books that will help my yearn for a happy reading experience !!!

Suggest me a book where people have superpowers but don’t want them
I’m looking for books where people get supernatural abilities through a supernatural event, experimentation, etc. but the story isn’t them trying to save the world, it’s them trying to get revenge or get rid of the powers. Really interested in morally gray characters, but okay if they’re not.
Ideally would love something that is more contemporary fantasy/sci-fi but not a must!

suggest me a butterfly inducing romance but not cringe
As the title says, it cant be cringey writing. I tried The Love Hypothesis and The Spanish Love Deception and they really just weren’t for me.
I want something to make me feel those giddy feelings but i dont want a tragedy either.

S.A Cosby! Where do I even start?
I found his books through booktok and I’m intrigued with each of the different plots. I’ve heard good things from SO SO SO many people and I’m a huge thriller gal. I want to read them all but I don’t know where to start. I’m hoping I can get some advice on an order to go in! Thank you :)

Medium to long books that hook you in from the beginning?
I've been trying to complete the 'read your height in a year' challenge for several years now and have yet to succeed because I have such a hard time getting drawn into books. I'm looking for book recs that are medium to long to super long and hook you in right from the start. I love fantasy and sci fi, am open to YA, middle readers, adult, whatever. Some books like this that come to mind are Six of Crows and the other Leigh Bardugo books, Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil, Iron Widow, The Power. Any thoughts?

Suggest me a book to get out of my own head and do things
Sometimes I feel like my own thoughts and the "grand narrative" I try to create of my life are all consuming. Concerns about who I will be in the future, the things people will say when I die, all the possible things I could accomplish etc.
What book made you want to just stop all the thinking and just do something !?

Please suggest me a fiction book I can finish in one sitting
I'm looking for a captivating fiction book that draws you in and is so engaging that you can read it in one sitting.
I'd prefer a book that's less than 200 pages, but I'm open to any suggestions that fit the above criteria!
Here's some of my favorite fiction books if that helps:
After Dark by Haruki Murakami
Rant by Chuck Palahniuk
Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse
Notes from Underground by Fyodor Dostoevsky
Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K. Jerome
Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card

Looking for books where strangers are stuck together and open up
Thinking something like “The Breakfast Club,” or stranded island, stranded on a broken bus, sort of vibe. I’ve already read “Lord of the Flies.”
I’m fine with any genre, but would appreciate genuine character building/interesting characters :)

Suggest me a book that when you first picked it up felt too long, but by the last page felt not long enough?
There are a lot of epics that seem self indulgent from the author. But im looking for a book where every page felt necessary, and so necessary you wanted more...

One Day Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This by Omar El Akkad
I have read this book twice in the past few months and I am curious if others have read it and what people’s thoughts are on this book. I think it’s such a powerful piece of writing and I’m just shocked it’s not showing up more in suggested threads.

Need a book with a wizard protagonist that is NOT YA
I'm 34 years old, I don't want or need another coming-of-age story. Please no wizard schools, I'm begging you.
I've read A Wizard of Earthsea and I've got Moorcock's Elric trilogy on the way. I'm not a huge fan of sex/romance but it's not a dealbreaker. As for tone (cheerful, grimdark, etc) I'm down for anything. Thank you.

books like The Outer Worlds/Fallout (not the apocalypse)
i'm not a big fantasy or sci-fi reader, but i love playing Fallout and The Outer Worlds. what books have this same kind of theme of a ragtag group travelling the galaxy, but not so focused on the post-apocalyptic aspect? so far, I have "the long way to a small, angry planet" on my list

Give me the OLDEST co-authored books you can think of
So i like to use various video-game-like achievements to keep my reading interesting and having come across The Inheritors (1901) by Ford Madox Ford & Joseph Conrad; I’ve come up with a new achievement, i think i shall call it
FOLIO-Á-DEUX: Read 1 novel written by two people.
Anyway, i mostly read older works, so give me the oldest co-authored books you can think of. I’m guessing there’s nothing prior to 1900 but do your best :) .
I’ve also read
The Illuminatus! Trilogy
The Fox Woman, The Blue Pagoda (1946)
Long Earth series
Good Omens.
EDIT: I'm not counting short story collections only longform stories that have two+ contributors.

Audiobook 8 hours or under that you enjoyed?
In a bit of a slump and need an audiobook that is on the shorter side. Open to most genres but I typically don't enjoy self help or fantasy. Genres I enjoy are fiction, thriller, contemporary, science fiction, historic fiction, and mystery (but I'm pretty flexible).

Suggest a good book for a 10 year old with dogs in it (dog lives please)
Edit: Cats are great too! Really, any good book with a pet!
My 10 year old has expressed a desire to read but says they don’t like any books. We have tried lots of genres and types of books but nothing has really been of interest. She says she thinks she would like a book about a dog. She started reading Old Yeller but didn’t finish it.
I would love a great book (or series) about a dog where the dog lives. If it is funny, that would definitely be a bonus too.
Also, trying to stay away from graphic novels. We love graphic novels but we were hoping to try a traditional novel this time.
Thank you!

Gothic novel?
I’d like to read a gothic novel, whether it’s a classic or a more modern story – I don’t mind either. I can’t stand summer, and I’d at least like to find comfort in thinking about my favorite season. I loved Frankenstein, Interview with the Vampire, The Picture of Dorian Gray, and Jane Eyre. If the story also includes a (tormented) love story, even better. Thanks! 🥀

Books with weirdos
Excuse the cringe title, I wasn't sure what to write; I'm looking for fiction books that feature main characters that struggle with socializing, making friends, dating etc. Not too picky about the specific genre, but books under 500 pages with female main characters are preferred! Thank you 🤗

After Michael Crichton?
Longtime fan of Michael Crichton here.
I’m looking for similar authors.
I love the plots of his books, the scientific aspects, the wonder of discovery, and the adventure. Not looking for anything dark or in the horror genre but similar author recs and what books to try by them would be great.
Please don’t recommend Andy Weir.

What is the one book you read that you’ve never stopped thinking about?
What is the one book which you read that no one seems to have heard of but it affected you so profoundly you still think of it years later?
When I was a student, I read a book called Under A Thin Moon by Livi Michael. It’s the story of 4 young working class women who live on a council estate in the UK. It’s utterly heartbreaking and resonated with me so much that I cried for weeks after reading it. I was truly emotionally scarred by it.
I’ve read thousands of books since and none have had such a devastating effect on me as that one book. I was lucky enough to recently find a copy but I’m too scared to read it again in case a) it cripplingly traumatises me again, or worse b) it has zero effect on me and I’ve spent all these years unnecessarily obsessing over a this book.
Do any of you have a largely unknown, hidden gem of a book that has affected you similarly?

10hr drive, suggest me an audio book (Spotify) for someone who hasn’t read in years!
I’ve a 10hr journey coming up and I’d love to listen to an audiobook rather than music the whole way.
Any gateway suggestions for a guy who’s not read in years? Got to be on Spotify audiobooks
Thanks
