Please recommend some biographies of writers

I'm ideally looking for biographies of writers where their lives outside their work are interesting/unique, but if their writing process is fascinating in and of itself, I would be interested in that too!

audiobooks for someone who doesn’t like audiobooks

I have an hour long commute and I need an audiobook! I don’t typically go for audiobooks but when I do, they’re usually because the narrator has a good voice. Let me know what audiobooks I should start with. Fiction or nonfiction, it doesn’t matter!

A book with fairies or light fantasy or mystical elements but not totally fantasy

I do not really like fantasy or the idea of fantasy books. But I always read serious non-fiction, history and politics and would like to try something that is a bit lighter but not full-on fantasy. Like a book that takes you to another place but that place isn't totally fantastical or fake either. If that makes sense. Any ideas?

Help! Horror book suggestions for a 9 year old who thinks they’re 19 years old?

Fan of this space on Reddit and hoping you can all me with a quandary I’m having with my daughter who loves horror. She is nearly 9 and thinks she’s ready for Stephen King and of course we are like absolutely not.
Are there any good horror book suggestions for this age range? She could prob even handle something at a 10 year old level as she’s something of an advanced reader. Any suggestions greatly
appreciated!

a thoughtful exploration of the wounds patriarchy inflicts on boys and men from a male author that doesn’t excuse men or malign women or minorities

I’m looking for thoughtful explorations of the wounds western patriarchal culture inflicts on boys and men raised in it, preferably from a male author, that manages to center the discussion on the suffering of men while in no way diminishing the plight of women and absolutely not excusing a bit of the bad behavior of men.

When I (42 raised cis het wht male in Texas) look around, I see men absolutely groaning in emotional pain, yet none of them have the words to express or even start to understand their own wounds. Almost every time I’ve seen a man trying to do so, outside of queer, trans, and exvangelical writing, they are desperately trying to name and stop their hurting while they cling to and defend the patriarchal system wounding them. So many of them lash out at women, minorities, and woke-ness out of fear that they will loose the illusory safety they’re gaslit to believe is assured them for being the favored class, male.

After a decade of deconstructing and rebuilding my entire world view, I finally feel like I am starting to really have the language to describe and explore my own personal wounds from patriarchy. I’m looking for books that will help me continue that. Books that document and explore the quiet hell that my life under patriachy has been.

Fiction about musicians or singers?

Hello! I'm looking for fiction books (no non-fiction and no (auto)biographies) that are about musicians, composers, singers, etc.

Bonus points if:

* the main character is a woman
* the book deals with the lack of creative inspiration, boredom with the character's output, struggles in performing arts industry, stuff like that
* it's about classical musician(s)

Same character(s), multiple dimensions/realities?

I am seeking recommendations for excellent books which follow the stories of the same character(s) across two or more alternate dimensions. I say excellent because I don’t just want to read books which do this, but ones that do it objectively very well.

Thank you!

What’s the best novella you’ve ever read?

I know the word novella can be a bit tricky—how many pages is that, really? Let’s say I’m looking for short novels, under 200 pages.

I’m open to all genres, so feel free to recommend anything.

Please include the author’s name so I can easily look up your suggestions.

Looking forward to reading them!

Mary Downing Hahn for adults

I was obsessed with Mary Downing Hahn ghost stories as a child but I haven’t read many books as an adult with the same vibe (besides Shirley Jackson, still haven’t read hill house though!) What are some good ghost stories that are grounded in the real world and show compassion for the ghosts?

Your fav horror books!

I want to read some more horror books! I'm looking for something that involves supernatural elements as opposed to human evil, e.g. I'd rather read about encountering monsters than serial killers. If its a bit funny as well that's a plus! I'm also not interested in reading anything with significant gore.

If it helps, my current favorite horror books are The September House by Carissa Orlando and The Twisted Ones and The Hollow Places by T. Kingfisher.

Greek mythology (or general mythology) fiction that isn’t Madeline Miller

Nothing against Miller, I’ve just read all she has. I finished Clytemnestra by Costanza Casati and loved it.

I’m just itching for more mythology, even if it isn’t strictly Greek!

I haven’t picked up a book in years! Please suggest one that you love

I haven’t picked up a book in years, but I’d really love to get back into reading. I’m always encouraging my kids to read daily and reminding them how important it is, but I know I should be modelling that behaviour myself. What’s your favourite book, in any genre? Thanks so much 🙏🏻

Looking for historical fiction recs for remote/northern living/cabin fever

I read The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah 3 years ago and it’s one of my favourites. I loved the setting of the book, 1970s Alaska, and loved the themes of complex relationships.

I’m not really interested in reading any other Kristin Hannah right now but would love some recommendations for historical fiction in a 1970s/80s remote/northern living setting.

Suggest me a book about fishing (and you get a shake of the fist if it’s about fly fishing)

Tell me your favorite fishing books.

Fly fishing books are the Marvel movie of the genre. They are everywhere, and there’s a few good ones but otherwise spare me. “But they’re heartfelt classics about a soulful, meditative technique in beautiful places!!!”. Coward. Anybody could write about that, and they do. Have mercy, they do.

Give me bobbers and worms, spearfishing, adventure logs, farm ponds, bass fishing, whatever. Give it to me hard.

Examples of stuff I’m looking for
Last of the Blue Water Hunters - Carlos Eyles (overwrought writing, but cool)
The Helldivers’ Rodeo - Humberto Fontova
Caught Me a Biggun - Jimmy Huston
Father Water, Mother Woods - Gary Paulsen

Finally, for an weird one
TenkaraBum blog - dudes a good writer, and who doesn’t love the occasional marvel movie?

Quiet, calming books to read before bed

I’m finally going to try and build a habit of reading rather than doomscroll before I fall asleep.

But I’m looking for books that are more “gentle” and will put my mind to ease over riling me up. I love a riveting heart pounding story but that’s the opposite of what I want when it’s bedtime.

While trying to keep an open mind to all suggestions I do like nonfiction more than fiction. Books on mediation, mindfulness, and relaxation are good. I love books on nature, particularly ocean related or about birds or peaceful seclusion in the mountains or something. A bit of humor isn’t required but wouldn’t hurt.

Same parameters for fiction books if anyone knows of good suggestions; I’m all about the ocean and birds or anything that’ll be good to wind down with after a tough day. If it makes sense I don’t want anything with super interesting cliffhangers, such as Wild Dark Shore or ACOTAR.

Thanks!

Reading to stop TikTok brainrot

As title says, trying to get away from tiktok brainrot every night.

Went on holiday last week so thought why not try a book, never been one for reading previously but grabbed Tell No One by Harlen Coben as I remember seeing some Netflix shows of his and I really enjoyed it.

Not sure where to go next but I’d like to continue reading, I’ve tried to get into reading in the past with things like Game of Thrones as I love the series but never been able to get into it for some reason..

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Suggest me a book about the secret life of animals, plants, fungi (or even bacteria)

I've just read the amazing book by Bill François - Eloquence of the Sardine: Extraordinary Encounters Beneath the Sea \- and fell in love. I want to read all his books, but unfortunately there's no translation yet, so I'm wondering what books have similar subjects.
For better suggestions, I just wanna mention that I especially like the tone in his book, it's the perfect balance between biological and fiction language. I also prefer when the writer is, in fact, a researcher!

A "short" book with a summer word in the title

Hello,

For a challenge, I need to read a book with a word full of summer vibes in the title ("sea", "ocean", "sun", "beach", "hot", "summer", etc etc....). I had planned to read the only one in my TBR that corresponded to this criteria but that's a longer one and I'm late ! So I am searching for a "short" book, short but interesting/full of surprises (short like in less than 300 pages).

I am not really into romance unless that a really funny one with a true couple (two comitted people or two people trying to be together in an exclusive way, not a whole volleyball/hockey team altogether in a relationship or anything like that, same, I am a bit too old now for school romances). If there is a romance, that's bonus point if that's gay (men) so I can relate more to it, but not a firm requirement. If you have ideas with no romance at all (all genres are okay) that's even better and they are of course more than welcomed.

Thank you for your recommendations, I am sure some of you have short hidden gems here !

Rags to riches story but make it class-conscious?

Would love to read a rags to riches story that is heavily critical of wealth inequality. I know this is a pretty common trope but I always eat it up—the protagonist “saved” from a life of poverty/persecution to live amongst the wealthy/powerful only to grow to question why the society they’re now part of continues to subjugate the lower class they were once a part of. I love it because you get a great combo of still experiencing the escapism of a struggling person suddenly having all their needs met, but you also get social commentary and the drama of betrayals etc once the protagonist gains class consciousness. Very fun trope.

Any good books that have this? Whatever genre—sci fi, fantasy, historical, etc. Prefer anything that doesn’t take place in the “here and now” ideally.

I'm craving fantasy court politics

I wanna read a book that goes into heavy detail on court politics and the inner workings of royal life and governance. My prefered genre is fantasy, but nonfiction books about historical high society might scratch the same itch.

I prefer following female characters who are at least 25+, but I won't turn down a male POV.

Plot wise, I don't care much for romance. I'd like either an assassination plot or war planning to play a major role in the story.
