LPT: Your state has an unclaimed property search database, check it every so often

My mom had $300 in random checks that were waiting for her to be claimed, every state will have a database where you can search your name to see if anything is available for you, this is my state’s (California’s) just to show an example https://www.sco.ca.gov/search_upd.html

LPT for losing my mom?

I lost my mother when I was about 10, found her in her bed. I think I should be over it but I’m not sure why I keep having these moments where I just get envious I guess of seeing my friends with there mothers. I’m almost 30 and this happened about 20 years ago, my father told me to get over it and that life moves on and I no longer talk to him for those reasons. What is a healthy way to get over this?

LPT: how to get your reluctant self into the door of the gym

Keep a gym bag in your car with your gym clothes and a towel (unless your gym provides towels) and a toiletry kit. Walk in the gym with it. Do your thing and then shower there. Use your stuff, walk out just like you walked in.

For me, having to get dressed and wander around the house finding stuff to get ready to go killed it completely. It absolutely destroyed momentum. It killed the idea of going. Sometimes it's difficult to make yourself go. Having to wander around and find stuff is an absolute dead end.

The gym bag method works. If you feel the need to whine about the gym showers being somehow less than perfect or whatever other whiny complaint, then you're just making excuses.

The gym is the fountain of youth. Every time I leave, I feel better physically and mentally. No exception, not a single one. Your brain tries to trick you into not going. I don't know why. It's kind of amazing. So get in the door! Getting in the door is the entire battle.

LPT: Always copy text elsewhere before completing or sending forms

If you spend any amount of time typing, text for an internet form, always copy the text elsewhere (notepad, or word for example), before sending. I dont know how many times I forgot something on the form and when pressing send, my carefully crafted text would disappear as the form would reset. This tip has saved me much much grief.

LPT: Attend free conferences

I’ve been attending a lot of free conferences recently and it made me think that if someone was struggling to feed themselves it’s a great place to go. If you’re in a city, there’s bound to be something happening most days, and depending on the level of sponsorship they normally offer anything from pastries & coffee, to fully catered lunch and an open bar in the evening.

LPT: There’s no right time to start anything you are continuously dwelling on

Action is always better than inaction. Don’t overthink the consequences, just start now whatever you were planning. Whether it’s a side hustle or your business or even trying for your dream job, just do it, not today, right now!
You regret ‘not doing’ or ‘not starting’ more than mistakes.
Remember this:
Doing it first -> Then doing it right -> Then doing it better

LPT: If you’re trying to build a new habit, make it easier than you think you need to at first.

One of the biggest reasons people “fail” at new habits is starting too big. You decide you’re going to go to the gym for an hour every day, meditate 20 minutes, cook from scratch every night… and then after a few days or weeks, you burn out.

Instead, make the first version of the habit so ridiculously easy that it feels almost silly to skip.
– Want to exercise? Commit to 5 pushups a day.
– Want to read more? Just read one page before bed.
– Want to meditate? Sit for 1 minute.

Once you’re consistent, you can build on it naturally. But the hard part is showing up not how much you do.

Small wins add up faster than big failures.

LPT - Make a digital calendar that has all warranty expirations and one month reminders prior to them expiring.

There's often times I've had something break and had to spend time and effort to figure out if it was still in warranty. Ever since doing this I get a nice one month notification when something's about to go out of warranty and it gives me a chance to check it and make sure there's nothing worn or busted on it before that happens.

LPT: Feeling overwhelmed or mentally foggy? Lie on the floor with your legs up the wall for 5-10 mins.

Try this the next time before making a decision. Just lie down, legs up the wall and arms relaxed. This calms down your nervous system and helps drain lymph fluid, slows your thoughts, and clears mental fog way faster than another scroll or caffeine hit.

It looks silly, but it works. Your brain (and lower back) will thank you.

LPT: Learn about types of glue for the right situation and stock up on them

I knew that superglue is fantastic when the break is a good area with a perfect fit of the parts, the material is listed and you follow instructions to the letter (don't just "wing it"!).

But what I really underestimated are other situations where something can be glued perfectly. Even when you are clumsy, so many things can be repaired that most people would give up on!

Fracture line in a plastic toy, box or anything like that

An UV hardening glue can fix this to perfection! If it breaks again, it'll probably not where the glue was applied. Water pistol, even high pressure super soaker, plastic tool box, ...

Broken furniture

A two component glue that hardens instantly when both are combined works in similar situations and feels as strong as welding. E. g. when the headrest of a chair breaks off. Might work better than the UV hardening glue for wood & metal under heavy load.

Messed up (frayed) drill hole, e. g. in difficult material like grout

Hot glue into the failed drill hole, then the wall plug. Act fast, but don't burn yourself, and let it harden before continuing with the screw. (And hope you don't have to face the one who deals with that hack after the screw served its purpose.)

Alternative to drilling in walls and ceiling

Power strips, e. g. for ceiling lights. Only problem: It's just a matter of time before they give in. Some lose power from UV light, others just in time.

Stick things to roughcast walls

Strips, similar to power strips but weaker, claim that they only work on plain surfaces, but they do a decent enough job with a wall poster, calendar or other things where you'd typically use simple tape if it were a plain wall.

Cheap styrofoam toy

Styrofoam glue is the way to go. Follow instructions to the letter, it's quite different from most other types of glue! But even things like a bigger toy plane will be fixed with great durability. Even for a $4 toy plane is worth fixing, considering the low investment financially and in terms of effort.

Broken china and pottery

Well, this is the part where it turns into more of a LPT request. Normal superglue, or special superglue for china does a decent job if the fit is perfect, but not fantastic. (Practice putting it together fast before applying the glue.) There are also glues that imitate a Kintsugi style fix without the usually required skill. Common problems with many methods include: Crack still feelable, not dishwasher / heat / oil safe.

Duct tape

Just always have some. You'll know when you need it.

LPT: if you're looking for a job, mention it to everybody that you come in contact with. You never know whose sister's neighbor's uncle is hiring.

I was trying to make a career change in my mid-20s and was having problems getting my foot in the door. I visited a loan officer at my credit union in the middle of my job hunt and mentioned it to her. her eyes lit up and said that the person that she had just had a meeting with worked in HR at this kind of company that I was looking to get into. She said that she could pass on my information if that was okay with me. She did and within 24 hours this person contacted me and I had an interview at his company and was hired the next week. If I had never mentioned it to this loan officer, I wouldn't have gotten my foot in the door when I did.

LPT: Feeling stuck? Try writing a kind letter to your past self, then respond as your future self.

Sounds weird, but it works. Whenever I feel overwhelmed or can't figure out what I need, I open my notes app and write a short letter to my past self like, "Hey, I know things were rough back then. Here's what I wish you'd known."

Then I flip it and write back from my future self, like I'm offering advice or reassurance from a place where I’ve figured things out. It's honestly helped me get out of some mental ruts and see things with more clarity.

Small trick. Surprisingly powerful.

LPT: Stop begging for love, respect, or attention. If it’s not given freely, it’s not real.

You should never have to convince someone to treat you right.

The moment you feel like you're chasing someone’s time, love, or basic decency that’s your sign.

It’s easy to mistake effort for loyalty.

But bending over backwards for people who wouldn't even lean forward for you? That’s not connection. That’s self-abandonment.

Respect, love, and attention that has to be begged for will always come with strings, control, or conditions.

True relationships, romantic or not feel safe, mutual, and calm. They’re not built on anxiety or confusion.

So the real LPT?

Don’t fight for a seat at someone’s table when you can build your own.

Energy is currency. Spend it where it’s returned.

LPT: You can wash moldy plastic shower curtains in your washing machine

Just throw it in with regular detergent. I use a bit of bleach, too, but my curtain is clear, so use it at your own risk.

Then, just run it on a heavy setting. You can put in a few towels to help kind of scrub the mold off, but it's optional. Do not put it in the dryer.

No more mold & your shower will smell great.

LPT: If a friend starts experiencing any form of domestic violence start secretly collecting evidence for them as soon as you suspect something

The best thing you can do for a friend you suspect is starting to experiencing abuse is start collecting any evidence right away. Write journal entries and email to yourself, collect sound bites, pictures, etc. There's a great chance your friend won't want to hear your advice or opinions on the matter and will reject and need to realize what's happening on their own. As denial is a comom theme for victims of abuse theres a chance they don't have enough or even any evidence of abuse especially if its psychological. Once they are ready, having a paper trail ready for them to use is a huge gift.

LPT: When you're overwhelmed by a decision or emotion, write a letter to yourself — but date it 6 months in the future.

Feeling stuck, stressed, or unsure what to do? Open a blank page and write:

"Dear me, it's January 2026. Here's what I wish you had done back in July 2025..."

By stepping into your future mindset, you're tapping into long-term thinking — which helps override panic, short-term fear, and impulsive choices.

This trick rewires your brain to think with perspective, and often, the "future you" knows exactly what needs to happen.

✅ Great for major life decisions, breakups, burnout, career stress, or identity crises.

🧠 Bonus: It feels like getting advice from your wiser self — and it usually works.

LPT: When buying prepackaged produce or meats take time to weigh it at one of the scales available in the produce department, it will save you from being shortchanged.

I frequently find what is the weight marked on produce and meats is incorrect. I weighed a chuck steak and found it was almost 8oz less than stated. At $8.97/pound that is almost $4.00 difference. Peppers I weighed were 0.73 pounds not the specified 1 pound. I would have paid $0.72 for missing product. These are just a couple examples. Weigh your purchases and if you find discrepancies speak with management. That’s the only way things will change so that you fully get what you’re paying for.
