LPT: If someone is having a bad day, don't rush to fix it.

Sometimes people don't want advice. All they want is someone who will listen without interruptions or trying to fix everything. I’ve been in conversations where just saying, “That sounds really frustrating,” has made more of a difference than any suggestion I could have made.

LPT: get and use a temporary phone number when contacting unknown person

I see lots of post people get upset when realizing they gave their phone number to strangers. Buy some temporary SIM cards and use them (for example when buying new home, when buying something online, whatever, etc.). You can always throw this SIM card away.

LPT: Before Paying for Junk Removal, Try This

LPT : If you're moving out or just need to get rid of large furniture, try listing it on Facebook Marketplace for free before paying a junk removal company.

I'm in the middle of moving and had some old patio furniture that wasn't in great shape. I got quotes from junk removal companies, and they wanted around $400 to haul it away.

Instead, I listed everything on Facebook Marketplace for free. Less than an hour later, people had come by and picked up everything.

One thing that helped: I was completely honest about the condition of the furniture in the listing and before arranging pickup, so there were no surprises for anyone.

LPT - If one of these four names appear in a recently published story/text/exerpt, there is a chance it is AI generated.

TL;DR - "Elias", "Thorne", "Silas", and "Vale". "Elias Thorne" especially.

How it caught my attention -

Sooo, I've got severe depression (functional, but clinically diagnosed), and for the longest time, one of the ways it's manifested was my inability to fall asleep. As I used to write short stories and several unfinished books when I was younger, I began taking a crack at uploading my short stories or taking excerpts of them and uploading into ChatGPT/Grok in order to generate...bedtime stories for myself.

I'd read what was generated, and fall asleep in the process. Sometimes I just wrote a random writing prompt for shits and giggles.

Anywho, I noticed constantly what whenever there was room for the AI to insert a named character, one of the four aforementioned names showed up constantly, and sometimes together, with "Elias Thorne" especially being a frequent one if the story is sci fi related. If the character is female, "Vale" will typically show up as a surname.

With everything going on about AI, and intellectual honesty, I figured I'd share this so it's easier for folks to spot AI generated works.

LPT: There are free, online digital faxing web apps that let you fax documents globally for free

I've been meaning to send the Education Department my tax documents for the longest time.
The options were mail the documents or fax them. I don't have a printer, so was going to have to drive to staples, pay to print out my documents, sign them, and then pay to fax them or mail them. A pain in the ass to say the least all to just get out of default for my federal student loans.

I am a perennial procrastinator, and have been putting this off for months, (probably why I'm in debt/collections, I know).

Anyway, I did some googling, and turns out there are plenty of services that can handle all of this online for free.

The one I used allowed me to upload a pdf, sign it digitally via esign, and fax it across the US all for free in high quality digital format, and I'll get an email from the application once the fax has been received by the department of education. It took all of 2 minutes.

I won't list the actual service I used as I don't want to break any rules and advertise, but happy to share in DMs. But seriously, there seems to be a fair few legitimate applications that do this that are backed by big companies.

All I had to do to get 5 free faxes was share a link with my wife to "invite" her to the application.

A good time saver and probably saved me a few bucks at Staples.

LPT- How to pick a perfect peach

How to pick peaches- from your Asian auntie.

Now, I am mostly familiar with yellow peaches but I am sure this technique will work with other peaches.

First off, you should know that the sweetness and juiciness of a peach has little to do with how soft or firm they are. You can have a rock hard peach ripen in your kitchen over a few days and it will be delicious. You can have a soft, yielding peach from the farmers market and it will be mealy and dry. So picking a delicious peach has little to do with if a peach yields to your touch at first.

When you look at your peach, you want it have red and orange colorings or a significant blush alongside its base color of yellow flesh.  You want it to have both a blush and a base color because you know it has been out in the sun and has been given time to grow.  You should also see a prominent seam- this means that it has had enough time on the stem for it to have aged properly- juvenile peaches are not going to have the depth of flavor as a well ripened peach.

Then, taking the peach to your nose, you want to inhale deeply where the stem is to make sure there is a “peach” like fragrance. As the peach softens, that fragrance will become intoxicating and you will know it is ready for eating before you even enter the kitchen. But it doesn’t need to be strong when you first buy them- just a little bit of fragrance tells you they will be perfect later.

Finally, as you hold the peach in your hand, consider the weight of the peach in relation to the volume.  If it feels heavier than it should in relation to its volume, it will more likely be a juicier peach. Remember- the peach has to feel heavy for its size. Big or small peaches can both be delicious but they must feel like they have been watered sufficiently during their growth. This is an important part- more than color or fragrance- because dry mealy peaches are not as tasty raw.  They must be baked or cooked with sugar to soften and hydrate the fibers therein. Still delicious but it takes more work.

There is some debate as to which kind of peach is better: cling or free stone. People argue that cling peaches have a better flavor and they come earlier in the season so you can satisfy that craving sooner rather than later. But for me, I think the wait for free stones later in the season has merit. It’s a little easier to eat and tends to be less messy.

Speaking of mess, I know some people like to keep the fuzz on their peaches and some people like their peaches peeled. Peeling a ripe peach is a joyful thing for me- when the flesh is soft and yielding, the peel comes right off with a gentle tug. But eating peaches with the fuzzy bits also means you can taste the sweetness of the sun right there. So it’s definitely up to the connoisseur.

I hope this helps you during peach season.

LPT: Before any difficult conversation, decide what you want the other person to feel at the end, not what you want to say. It changes every word you choose.

Most people prepare for hard conversations by rehearsing their points. Then the conversation goes sideways because the other person got defensive in the first 30 seconds, and none of the rehearsed points ever landed.

Instead, ask yourself one question beforehand: "When this conversation ends, what do I want them to feel?" Respected but corrected? Safe but clearly informed? Appreciated but aware something has to change?

Once you fix the destination, your brain automatically filters your words. You'll notice yourself dropping the sarcastic opener, cutting the "I told you so," and leading with the thing that keeps them listening.

Works on bosses, partners, kids, and that one friend who never texts back.

LPT if you have teenagers you should make your presence known when you get home to them in the house

Make a bit of extra noise if you come home either on time or unexpectedly. It doesn't matter if they're alone or have someone over.

Just let them know you're home by closing the door hard enough to be heard or yelling out that you're home.

Rather than quietly walking through the house.

You know why. You were a teenager once.

They don't want that and you definitely don't want that so do both of you a favor and give them a moment to compose from across the house.

LPT Using a window air conditioner unit along with your central AC may save you money on your electricity bill.

::tldr:: if your central AC unit is struggling to keep your house cold and it takes long into the night to cool it back down after a hot day, a window AC unit may lower your electricity bill by reducing the workload of the central AC unit and allowing it to shut off earlier at night, and allows it to take breaks throughout the day.

Now for the long version lol. My electricity bill went down roughly 10% comparative to last years bill from the same month after buying a window AC unit.

Before the new unit, my central AC struggled during the summer to keep the house cool. I live in Lynchburg, Virginia where the summers are humid, and this one is particularly warm. Even with the central AC on, during the hottest part of the day the inside of the house would get up to 86°(30°c) and the central unit would continue pumping all day and not have the house cooled to 74° until about midnight.

Cut to this year where I was prepared for it and bought a window AC unit to help the hottest part of the house stay cooler. The Unit is a little 6,000 BTU meant to cool off my work-from-home office that had terrible airflow from the AC. I fully expected my bill to go up some, but I was okay with that for the comfort.

What I was not prepared for was my entire house staying at 74° the entire day and my bill going down. After contemplating what happened, it appears that the AC is able to shut off and on throughout the day rather than pumping the entire day, as well as the house not needing to cool down until midnight, as it needed to previously.

I hope this helps someone if they are in the situation I was in. Thank you for reading. Have a good one!

LPT If you're dating a huge swifty and are short on cash, you can probably save a lot of money by proposing with "Paper Rings"

Taylor Has a really popular song called "paper rings" where she describes the euphoric feeling of having loved someone for so long, you don't care about what's material anymore and would even mary them with paper rings, and keep them in a frame. 'I like shiny things, but I'd Mary you with paper rings". Could be nice to be able to quote a few of the [lyrics\](https://youtu.be/qL3NKbMScco?is=SdN2phJXpFSKzIL6) too

Doesn't have to be an engagement, btw

No one is the same, some people really value the item and the moment itself, but that's probably something that will make your partner feel seem. You can propose again, if they're not a fan

LPT: Credit card chargeback is not some magic way to protect yourself

People online keep saying "just do a chargeback". It's not magic. It doesn't work like that. Those people have probably never done a chargeback and simply parrot whatever they read online.

I bought an item from an online store. I never received it.
Naturally, I did a chargeback. I instantly received the money back.
I thought that was that and it's over.
3-4 months later, I got an email from that online store saying they will fight it.
It's going to be back and forth and I have a feeling credit card companies don't give a crap about us so I'm going to lose that money.

Be careful what you buy with the credit card and never think "I can just do a chargeback later, the credit card company will side with me" in the case of fraud.

LPT: You should look at the first time home buyers programs in your area

I just found out about first time home buyer programs. Evidently my state, county, and city all have seperste ones that stack. My city one is especially good, they offer a no interest equity loan for up to 30% of the house that come due only when you sell the house or move out.

Let me emphesize that: My city will fund up to a 30% down payment on your house if you are a first time home buyer. The biggest hurdle is you need a 600 credit score and less than $20,000 in fluid assets (excluding retirement) That basically removes the barrier for purchasing a home for most people, and with that large of a down payment you should get a decent interest rate. Basically you could move towards home ownership for cheaper than renting. Thats without the potential grants from the state and county that are basically free money.

Anyways, I thought that was crazy because I'd never heard of it.
