How is it that sodium hypochlorite is thought to not be carcinogenic?
If sodium hypochlorite is a powerful oxidiser, and oxidisers “destroy cell tissues, shred DNA” and create free radicals and other secondary toxic products… how is it thought to not be carcinogenic?

Is loving chemistry enough of a reason to go into chemistry as a career?
I am currently doing my BS in chemistry. I wanted to pursue my PhD until I started doing research in a lab. I absolutely love working in the lab. The work itself is not what's scaring me away from a PhD. It's that everyone I talk to is worried about being able to find jobs. The only person actively encouraging me to go to grad school is the PI of the lab I am working in. Every grad student I have spoken to has advised me to stay away from a PhD for one reason or another.
I don't want to work in academia. I also am not sure industry will be able to make me happy the way learning about chemistry makes me happy. I really enjoy learning about chemistry. I could absolutely see myself enjoying the PhD on its own, but I'm getting the feeling that a lot of the jobs won't be as fulfilling.
Do those of you who loved chemistry early on still find it fulfilling as a career?

Good afternoon, colleagues.
I've been trying to build an alpha helix of a protein that shows the hydrogen bonds along the helix, and I downloaded Avogadro for Windows but it doesn't come with the "Insert peptide" option, and I don't know how to download that plugin. Do you know how to fix this or other software where I can do what I intend to? I got this in Wolfram Mathematica, but the hydrogen bonds are essential for my work.
Thank you.

I live in a high salt on roads during the winter state. If I were to attach a reactive metal like zinc to my car frame would that prevent my car from rusting as fast?
Would a sacrificial anode protect my car?

Urgent-Has anyone ever built DIY Gas Chromatograph?
I’m currently building a DIY GC based on https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.jchemed.1c00868. But I don’t have Silica gel 60. Are there any another way I could make the column? Project deadline is Friday and it’s too late to order silica now.

Practical Chemistry for Adults, that has a useful output?
So, weird question, I want to get into Chemistry as a hobby. What I really don't want to do is waste time doing silly experiments kids could do. Preferably if there's access to free resources that I could actually do that either has useful output, or could be done to contribute to something bigger once I get some basics down. I'd love to have access to any resources anyone knows about.
Thank you! :-D
Edit: Slight caveat, I have the means to buy proper equipment, and will take all safety precautions. So no one has to worry about that, I don’t want to blow myself up!

In response to EPA's upcoming ban, some products are substituting perchloroethylene with toluene, but is the latter realistically "less bad" for you?
I just got some E6000 glue and one thing I noticed is that it is now flammable and says "E6000 CLR TOL" indicating reformulation from styrofoam in perc to styrofoam in toluene.
Toluene isn't particularly good for you. In the end, is this for the better?

Looking for Raman training sample
Hey there, I'm looking for an everyday sample which I can use to show microRaman imaging (mapping) to students. Something that I can find easily and it's inhomogeneous enough to show different features for mapping studies. Any idea?

Just started industry job after PhD — supervisor told me I’m too slow. Any advice?
Hi everyone,
I recently transitioned from academia (PhD in chemistry) to my first industry job in a pharmaceutical company. I’m learning the ropes, especially with cGMP documentation and procedures — which I’ve never done before.
Last week, I performed my first cGMP experiment and completed the documentation. I tried to be very careful and deliberate, because I really didn’t want to make mistakes, especially since this was my first time doing it under industry standards. But afterward, my supervisor told me I’m “too slow” — both in running the experiments and in writing documentation. They said this pace isn't acceptable in industry.
Honestly, I’m feeling discouraged. I want to do things right, but I also know that speed matters here.
Has anyone else been in this situation when moving from academia to industry?
How did you adjust your workflow and improve your speed without compromising accuracy or quality?
Any advice would be really appreciated.

Over 200lbs of copper sulfate
I have over 200lbs of copper sulfate, which was created by adding sulfuric acid to copper nitrate.
The copper nitrate was a result of 50/50 nitric + distilled water boils used to dissolve base metals from gold filled jewelry. I added the sulfuric acid to the copper nitrate waste in order to reuse/recycle the nitric, as such addition would result in reusable nitric and copper sulfate.
Now I'm wondering what I can do with all of this copper nitrate? I have no use for it. Any suggestions???? Does anybody need some? The majority of it is in crushed/small granular form, but some is also in larger crystals form.

Chem graduates who struggled with getting their degree, do you regret it?
Prospective chem major here once again, struggling with classes and wondering if I'm making the right choice.
Chem majors who are bad at math/physics/some integral part of a chem degree and stuck with it, are you glad you did it? Or do you regret it? I'm entering my sophomore year of community college, taking a summer course on Mechanics (AP Physics C) and it feels like its beating my ass. I don't dread going to class but sometimes I dont want to go, and I work for hours doing my homework. I want to do chemistry but I fear I might not be good enough to continue. For those who have felt this way, thoughts on your experience? Are you glad you continued or not, with where you are now?

Any other chemist like to listen to audiobooks while working in the lab? If so what books do you recommend?
Recently started listening to audiobooks while doing cleaning and standard QC tests in the lab. So far I have almost finished the harry-potter series and now I will need recommendations for the next books to listen too.
Edit: I like just about anything that has a decent plot or is educational. I tend to like fantasy style books but I also enjoy historical books. Such as gates of fire ( a book about thermopylae and the spartanta).
