Everyday uses for organic chemistry?

So I find the subject pretty fascinating, but I have limited knowledge so far. Has anyone found that it helps them do stuff hands on in daily life (rather than in an industrial context/using the products of industry)? For example using some nifty org chem trick to spice up a dish you are cooking.

I'm afraid of writing your career wrong.

Hi, I was thinking of writing a book where the main character studies Chemistry. The problem is that I have no idea about the career and I don't want to end up ruining it by writing something badly. So, could you explain to me what your degree is like, some experiences, or advice on things I should definitely or shouldn't write about in the book?

Want to be akin to a Cosmetic Chenist

Hi, I am 50 years old and want to start my own skincare line. I’m not going back to school for chemistry or anything but i’m interested in learning what courses people might suggest to learn how to make formulas. I saw another post on here about a cosmetic chemist which is why I’m posting here. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Interference of 304 Stainless Steel in Chemical Reaction

Would 304 Stainless Steel interfere in the following (rough) procedure for growing Topaz? Do I need a PTFE liner? Any suggestions for possible liners other than PTFE? As I’m having trouble finding a liner for my specific chamber.

Materials
- Aluminum nitrate Al(NO₃)₃ or aluminum hydroxide
- Silicic acid or fine SiO₂ powder (quartz flour)
- Ammonium fluoride (NH₄F) – source of fluorine
- pH buffer – e.g., HNO₃ or HCl to slightly acidify

Procedure:
1. Prepare the Hydrothermal Solution:
• Dissolve:
• ~1 g Al(NO₃)₃
• ~0.5 g SiO₂ powder
• ~0.3–0.5 g NH₄F in 20 mL DI water
• Add 1–2 drops of dilute nitric acid to slightly acidify (pH 4–5 range).
2. Seal & Heat:
• Load solution into the reactor (fill to 60–70%).
• Seal autoclave and heat to 210–220°C over 3–4 hours.
• Maintain for 7–14 days.
4. Cool Down & Rinse:
• Let cool to room temperature.
• Wash resulting crystals with distilled water.
• Dry in desiccator or open air.

question regarding chemically grown crystals

hello there.i've made alum crystals and am starting to grow copper crystals (both the blue one from straight copper sulfate pentohydrates and the ones from that same stuff using a power supply to make it into regular copper crystals) and i was wondering if it would be feasable to form those crystals inside a mold, instead of letting them grow freely.i mean, doing like a mold of a specific shape between the anode and cathode, with the mold being like a tube with its wall shaped into something like a cube or whatever.if someone has tried before,i'd happily ask for any information you may have!

Chemical that dissolve lead and preserve steel

Hi, I am reaching you because I am seeking for a chemical solution that would dissolve lead but keep steel (and the blueing coating) and chromium preserved (if there is any)

To be more accurate : I have a piece of chromed steel that has lead stuck to it and I don't wanna wear the chrome by mechanically remove it, so I am seeking to dissolve lead by soaking it into a chemical that would only attack lead.

I thought about low concentration nitric acid, but it attacks chromium. Is vinegar working good? I've read that it can be combined with hydrogen peroxyde. But will it preserve steel?

Thanks

Polyester and nylon fumes

I'm a hair stylist and I sometimes work with artificial hair, which is made form nylon and polyester. When using the hair irons, the hair emits fumes, which I'm breathing (I have to seriously bend head and neck to avoid it). I'm pretty nervous about this and I figured I would ask here if it's extremely toxic and I should stop.

How screwed am I?

I hope this is allowed in this sub, if it isn't, please direct me elsewhere. I am approaching my senior year as a USA based chemistry B.S. student and I am looking at my future for grad school or starting to work. I have two and a half years of research experience, two internships, and have worked as a TA, so I feel like I am pretty ahead of the game. My topic of interest is radio/nuclear chemistry and with the massive amounts of funding cuts it has me feeling like I did this all for nothing. Thousands of chemists will be laid off in the coming years so do I have a chance of getting hired? Do y'all have any advice?

Anyone (especially patent law related) that companies pay their law school??

hi i'm planning to prepare for the law school but the financial part is the one that i'm hesitating.

I wonder if anyone has their law school tuition paid by their company. I'm currently pursuing a BA in Chemistry (my school doesn't offer a BS), and I'm considering pursuing a PhD before looking for a patent-related firm that might pay for law school tuition, as I've heard some patent companies do that.

I'm wondering:

1. what's your degree: engineering bachelor/master/phd, or whatever major
2. was there any restriction when they pay you?? like you have to go to the law school tuition less then X dollars, etc.

Thank you in advance!!

Can a 16 year old legally buy a compressed nitrogen gas tank?

Hi

So im 16 and I have a summer school project about controlled gas reactions and pressure systems (it is chemistry + engineering). For part of the demo, I need a small compressed nitrogen gas tank, it doesnt have to be big but one of those tanks used for homebrewing or tires

I do have homebrew shops nearby and welding stores nearby as well but i dont know if they would sell someone to my age

I did read one of these store's terms and conditions and it didn't mention anything about age. i also read mixed things online, some say you have to be 18. other people say it depends on your situation and the store (like if it is a small store and individual use, its fine)

I have my own money but I don't want to waste time placing an order online to just get IDed at pickup and get rejected

Anyone got experience with this? do I need an adult? Cause I only have a dad and he often makes me get things for him solo, and he works a lot. I am tempted to contact one of these stores but just posting this ahead of time for now before I make a decision

Thanks
