Resources on how to learn chemistry

Are there websites/resources on how to learn chemistry, just like Gerard t’Hooft’s “How to Become a Good Theoretical Physicist” and John Baez’s “How to Learn Math and Physics?”

Question about alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride

Background disclaimer: I’m about 18 weeks pregnant and a big clean freak. I always wear a mask and open windows when I use cleaning sprays.

Today I cleaned the sink with a mixture that had 2% bleach and 98% other ingredients. The basin area was still damp when I used a bottle of Scrubbing Bubbles on the sink handle to get rid of a hard water stain. Immediately, it occurred to me, wait, probably shouldn’t have these near each other. I looked at the ingredients for Scrubbing Bubbles: it’s 0.26% alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride. I remembered learning in college that you cannot mix bleach and ammonium chloride, so I called poison control. To my surprise, the toxicologist says these two chemicals (alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride and bleach) are not dangerous to interact.

I trust her, and I didn’t want to take her time with too many follow up questions, but I am very curious—why is it not dangerous, when it is dangerous for ammonium chloride and bleach to mix? Sorry again for the dumb question; I do have a science background but this isn’t my area of expertise— I’m keen to learn something new!

Question about fentanyl analogs

I saw on Wikipedia the other day a fentanyl analog called tert-butyl remifentanil, it says it's 150,000x stronger than morphine and 210x stronger than remifentanil. Remifentanil Google says is around half the potency of fentanyl. What is the possibility of analogs like tert-butyl fentanyl, tert-butyl sufentanil, and tert-butyl carfentanil? Would they all be extremely potent also? And where would the tert-butyl group fall for those specific ones?

Diifference between Water:MeOH and Water:EtOH for filtration step?

Hello.

In an article the synthesis of PANI-HCl was conducted in the following way:

[Aniline](https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/IT/en/product/sial/242284?srsltid=AfmBOoozkDdFon8-jJsgKRlCnaOobIBmCsRfJacR5AU5geaTCACTmaIa) (5 ml) and **APS** ([ammonium persulfate](https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/IT/en/product/sigald/248614)) (15.3 g) were dissolved separately in 1 M aqueous HCl (150 ml), ottenendo una sol A (Aniline in HCl) e una sol B (APS in HCl).

* The polymerization reaction is ignitiated by drop wise addition of the oxidant (sol B) to sol A during approx 20 min.
* Then it was carried out under mechanic stirring (350 rpm) at room temperature for other 2h and 40 min. at this point you stop everything and you wait that it precipitate.
* After 24 h, the resulting product was filtered under vacuum and washed with a mixture of 1:1 water:MeOH.

So my question is why in the filtration step did they use the Water:MeOH and not the Water:EtOH?

Feasibility of 3+2 master's program (non-thesis), and its affect on employment

I recently noticed the four-year university I intend to apply to offers a 3+2 accelerated master's program (non-thesis), and I was hoping I could get some advice on how detrimental a non-thesis degree would be to my desirability to companies seeking fresh graduates in medical and computational chemistry. TMK, medical chemistry wants graduates that are published from the start.

How feasible is an accelerated master's program for someone that has a combined three hour commute to the campus twice weekly but doesn't need to work? I should have my associate's at the end of spring 2026, so the program should be closer to a 2+2 or 1.5+2. I'm getting old (late 30s), and I would rather not spend an additional five of my "still young" years on a Ph.d if I can get 80% of the benefits / wage boost while saving several years.

I'm also considering a post-bachelor's MLS certificate (one year program) so I can get access to medical labs (more job options) and better starting wages, but alternative opinions on this are also welcome. I estimate it's around a 15-20K boost that pays for the lost time in two years, and making money is my singular goal.

Sorry if it’s stupid I’m just curious

I’ve watched some funny and dumb ad that was basically just an add for some water bottle. It adds hydrogen to the water, and supposedly it gives you better stats, more energy, a better immune system, you’re immune to cancer, shit I would be surprised if the shit gave superpowers. But I don’t really care about those effects. Is it actually possible to add hydrogen to water. Because I always thought “H2O”. 2 hydrogen and 1 oxygen. If you add more hydrogen dosent it become something else. Can you actually just add more atoms and have something stay the exact same? (Or at least the same type of material)

What are household experiments that sound normal but are extremely dangerous?

I resently found out (please dont try this) that if you mix bleach and vinagar it creates a deadly chloride vapour which in long exposure can starts to melt your flesh

I mean how normal this sound bleach is used to clean stains and vinagar is used to neutralize the base of sone cleaning products

Another one that if you hear a matel too hot and put it in water instantly the matel will bust and peices could impale you

p-orbital direction

I'm trying to teach myself some chemistry and I'm confused about p-orbitals. Books show three orbitals along x-, y- and z- directions. But space is isotropic. I can use a coordinate system pointing any which way. So should there be an infinity of orbitals instead of just three?

So chemists of Reddit. I know how pure sodium reacts when it comes into contact with water, but what happens if it comes into contact with blood? Is it the same reaction? Mildly lessened? I’d like to know for the sake of the rules of a thing I’m doing in my campaign.

DLS abnormal periodic signal?

hmmmm... we found there's a weird signal in the DLS measurement of PEG when at long duration (\~180s, usually it's 10s), and it's about 0.05 Hz. We also tested the water and similar pattern appeared. Wonder if anyone also see this kind of thing...

The strange signal we met...

I found the data for water 2 month ago may also have the background\(?\)

Rinsing wafers after HF etching

Which practices are used in the semiconductor industry to rinse/clean wafers after HF etching?

I know about diluting it with high amounts of running deionized water, but are there other methods (to reduce DI water consumption or any other reasons)?

Any chemical reaction to transform HF into something safer without involving calcium or other metallic ions (which I believe are usually undesirable near semiconductor wafers)?

Copper Electrogravimetry

Hi all,

I'd love to share with you a problem of mine, Every week I get a piece of copper from our lab-clients, and I'm supposed to check the copper percentages.

I use Electrogravimetry, (dissolve the copper using sulfuric and nitric acid, and with appropriate tools (platinum net and a rod as electrodes). After electrodeposition, I dry it in an oven for half and hour (60 degrees) and then a desiccator for 3 days.

Every single time I get that the copper percentage is 103 - 101%, (weighing mass before and after).

Do you maybe have any idea? My boss insist I conduct this analysis using Electrogravimetry, even though I think this technique has lots of flaws.

Thanks !!!

Seeking advice on starting a private lab.

Hello.

I am looking into starting up my own lab with the intention of performing water/soil quality testing, as well as dabbling in natural product extractions. Basic stuff, essential oils. Probably some Soxhlet action. I’d like to make scents.

I’m wondering if I should just purchase some cheap-ass Temu glassware and mess around with it, or if I should invest a decent amount into getting regular priced things (expensive).

My plan is to test samples parallel to those I perform at work with the leftover volumes. Basically give myself a yardstick to determine if I’m accurate. Once I’m solid, offer consulting to private landholders. A catered, holistic assessment deal where some nerd in linen (me) comes out and does some titrations/tells you that the creek water is good to drink. Maybe offer eDNA testing and small-scale enviro monitoring.

So does anyone have any advice?
Any experiences with cheap lab gear?
Things to avoid?
Any sources of second-hand stuff like rotovaps or benchtop specs?

Cheers!

Instrument Service Contracts

Maybe not the right sub, but what's the consensus on service contracts for instruments? We have an ICP that has gotten really expensive, and we've not really ever had a problem with it or a repair call. Next year we got quoted out $12.5k.

Thoughts? Nightmares on going without a service contract?
