Is physics necessary to do well in physical chemistry?

I’m transferring from a community college to a university soon, and unfortunately, we didn’t have a dedicated chemistry program. I took the premed path which gave me gen chem 1 through organic chem 2, and I elected to take calc 1 and 2. It didn’t include physics though.

Right now I’m self studying physics and multivariable calculus, but I’m very concerned that I won’t have the foundation to do well in pchem.

I’ve spoken to professors and advisors and they told me I should do fine without calculus based physics. My school doesn’t require physics as a prerequisite either, but it’s recommended.

Am I in a good position? Taking physics will definitely extend the time I need to complete my degree.

Beginner question: should i learn all the elements, basic compounds and poly atomic ions.

Im starting a course soon where i will need to follow general chemistry, is it necessary for me to learn all the elements, poly atomic ions, and basic compounds? or is that not really done and a waste of time? im sorry for the beginner question.

Chemistry Topics For Passion Projects

Over the summer, I am doing Sci Mi, a research mentorship program, and I need a field of study or chemistry topic that I can base my research on. I also want to use this research for the Science Fair. I'm hoping to go to state if that is possible. I need some of the hardest things you learned in college classes. I would like them to be testable or have a hypothesis if possible. I'm a incoming Junior in High School so I'm trying to boost my college apps with meaningful research. I'm ok with any topic and please make them hard, I can handle it. I did a lot of self studying on organic chem so I know how to break things up into understandable pieces. If I need any help I'm sure my mentor will give me guidance.

Thank you!

Anyone here set up their own lab and making income through chemistry?

hi,
i’ve been learning chemistry on my own lately and it’s been growing more than a hobby. starting to feel like something i want to do more seriously, maybe even turn into real life work.

just wondering if there are people here who’ve built their own small lab setups and are making money with what they produce. maybe stuff like supplements, extracts or custom compounds etc.

i know it can be dangerous and hard to get into the industry without a uni diploma, but just curious :)

Is it normal for chemistry majors to really dislike organic chemistry?

I'm in the second class of Ochem right now, and it is honestly the worst thing i've ever taken. Maybe it is the professor or the fact that i'm taking general ochem (the one that Bio majors take) instead of the chem-major version, but this has been the first class in college I have really struggled with. I actually withdrew from the class and am going to retake it because it was that bad. The thing is, the class doesn't seem difficult or make me feel like i'm dumb. It just seems like to do good in the class you have to put hours and hours and hours of brute force memorization. I understand where the electrons want to go and yada yada yada but when it comes to recognizing which molecules synthesize what (i'm looking at you gabriel synthesis), my brain gets completely lost. and I know people say "you can't memorize ochem, you have to understand it"- but the tests are so time limiting that you need to rely on immediate recognition of the problem. ochem doesn't make me feel like I am getting any smarter, and i'm not jealous or spiteful for people that are doing very good in the class. I think everyone is capable in succeeding in ochem if your willing to put your life on hold to draw 100,000 cyclohexanes. there is literally like 100 reagents that I can't remember. anyways I hate this class. And i can't wait to be done with it so I can move on 😀🥱

What is the best way to extract an organic amine from a polar aprotic solvent, but both of them are water soluble?

Say you have an amine like dimethylamine or diethylamine, and its dissolved in a polar aprotic solvent, like DMF . both are water soluble.

Could copper salts be used? I once saw pyridine be removed via washing with cuso4.

Is there anyone else who thinks that using inspection to balance chemical reactions is kind of arbitrary?

It’s definitely useful for most straightforward reactions, but sometimes things get complicated—like with oxidation-reduction reactions. We usually balance those by splitting them into two half-reactions and then balancing the electrons. Still, it feels a bit weird and unintuitive to me. Is there any other algebraic or systematic method to balance these kinds of reactions more reliably

Question about chemical description warning words

What words would specify whether a chemical is a skin irritant, an eye irritant, or a respiratory irritant?

I remember taking a safety test regarding for a car shop class a while ago, and I don't remember the terms it used, and I'd like to use them for a convincing fake dangerous chemical for something I'm making. (It'll just have water in it)

Question on refrigerants

Hey folks, I'm basically making an AC m'doohickey at home. So far I've built a compressor, pipe network, and a throttle valve.

The idea I first had was to use 60% isopropyl alcohol due to it's easy availability and it's evaporation point and the works, but it would seem to not be that good at its job.

I'm wondering if there is any other somewhat fairly easy to obtain chemical that would work better for my purposes. Also keep in mind this this is basically MacGyvered from scraps and dreams. It's just so hot out I wish to be cool.

I'm using copper pipes with rubber hoses, as well as a large quantity of silicone sealant.

Does anyone here know how does pure ozone smell?

Has anyone generated Sodium hypobromite from sodium bromide (NaOBr from NaBr)?

I am working on a bromination reaction in aqueous medium by dissolving bromine in dilute sodium hydroxide which gives sodium hypobromite and sodium bromide, the hypobromite is responsible for the subsequent bromination. I am looking to optimise the reaction by utilising the bromine wasted in the formation of the bromide by converting it to the reactive hypobromite species. Has anyone used sodium hypochlorite or hydrogen peroxide to do the same? Thank you!

blue black colour disappears 4-5 minutes after titration of vitamin C with iodine solution.

So basically, I'm titrating ascorbic acid with iodine solution with starch indicator and there was definitely a persistent blue black colour even after swirling. Afterwards, I left my bench to do something and when I came back only a few minutes later, the colour pretty much faded away and the solution was clear again. Does this mean the end point wasn't reached? or do I not have to worry about. Appreciate the help, thanks.
