Favorite vendor for science chemistry supplies and why?

Hey y’all doing some research. Throwaway but main account is 10+ years old. What are your favorite vendors and why? Main reasons and what you like. Work for a company and just wants to make it the best it can be before I leave. I really want to help inspire as many students as possible to pursue science.

Phychem is my nightmare

Hello!

Just want to seek help thru this post. I am an undergrad student taking up chemistry and I am having a hard time to study Physical Chemistry. It's because my professor is not that good in terms of teaching and the course is very limited esp on different websites to procure some information with. I just want to ask if any of you have an idea on how I can excel in this course? Also, I have tried reading the Physical Chemistry by Atkins but I am still confused by its content. Does anybody have like alternative book you can recommend that is simple and easy to understand? In e-file, please. I really need it. Thank you!

Books for adults to learn and practice chemistry

Hi, I am looking for some recommendations. I was always good at natural sciences in high school, but choose to go into humanities in uni. Lately I‘ve been missing science a bit in my life, no doubt bc of my recent trip to Iceland, where I just go so excited again about environmental processes. I would love to learn about chemistry again on my own through books and exercises (e.g. drawing chemistry structured is something I always enjoyed). So I am looking for a book targeted at last year high school/university level. Any recs?

Pathways for the synthesis of 2-bromopropionic acid.

I am looking for different ways to synthesize 2-brompropionic acid, maybe someone has come across it in books or other places? I only found a way to brominate propionic acid, but I heard that there are other ways of synthesis. I would be grateful if you could tell me.

I got a question about metallic bonding.

So I’m a high school student and I have a question just because I’m making something.

I’m making pens in woodworking, and the pen I have has brass pieces like the clip and tip. The pens I’m making for my parents both have aluminum pieces.

I was wondering if 2 grey metals can make a yellow metal when bonded or melted together. Kind of like how copper + zinc = brass, but in this case, grey metal + grey metal = yellow metal (similar to brass or gold colour).

Why Clayden?

I see a lot of people recommend Clayden, but every time I try reading, it seems unclear? Is this just me or what? Idk why they are scared of commas.

Chemical Resistant Gloves

Hey guys! Switching labs soon and will need to buy a new pair of chemical resistant rubber gloves- I just really hate sharing gloves with people. I have sort of an idea of what I’d like, but I would like to ask around a bit. My lab obviously supplies nitrile gloves, I would just like a pair of <$100 mid to full forearm chemical resistant rubber gloves to layer over exam gloves that will fold up decent in a lab drawer or my labcoat pocket and also be a small bit heat resistant. I mainly work with harsh caustic acids/bases, piranha solution, aqua regia, petroleum-based chemicals, ligands, metallic precursors, and most solvents. To add, I’ve used viton and butyl in the past, but is there any newer material that I should explore?

Preferably Honeywell or Ansell.

Does beer’s law assume homogeneity?

When you look it up, google AI says that beer’s law does assume the liquid at which the light path is traversing is homogeneous. However, i cannot find a single reputable source (textbook, etc.) that actually states this. Would any one happen to know if this is true? And if so could provide a source or point me in the direction of one?

Edit: clarification

Would you use a Mac-native, free molecule drawing tool focused on clean 2D structure editing?

Hi everyone — I’m a Grade 12 student exploring software development and chemistry. I’m considering building a free, lightweight, Mac-native molecule editor as a learning project, and I’d love some feedback.

This idea came up after our teacher asked us to install ChemSketch for drawing molecules, but I quickly realized it only works on Windows — not macOS. As a Mac user, I couldn’t run it at all without setting up a virtual machine.

I’ve researched existing tools like ChemDoodle, MarvinSketch, Avogadro, and Ketcher. They’re all great in their own ways, but each seems to have trade-offs:

ChemDoodle – paid and powerful, but not fully Mac-native in UX
MarvinSketch – free for academics, but Java-based and somewhat clunky
Avogadro – awesome for 3D modeling, but less focused on 2D publishing
Ketcher – browser-based, but no offline desktop version

I’m curious whether there’s still room for a free, native macOS editor focused on:

Clean 2D drawing (atoms, bonds, valency checks)
SMILES export
Generating the IUPAC name from the drawn structure (using tools like RDKit)
Offline usage (via Tauri or SwiftUI)

This is still a rough concept, and I’d like to understand if it would be useful before I start prototyping. If you have a moment, could you comment with one of the following?

1. Yes — I’d use a free, native Mac drawing tool
2. Yes — especially if it’s useful for students or teachers
3. No — existing apps already do what I need
4. I don’t use macOS / This doesn’t apply to me
5. I prefer browser-based or mobile editors

Or feel free to elaborate. I’d really appreciate any feedback or suggestions!

German nomenclature

So I have a chemistry exam on 18th and we made a bet with my prof. He said you can get extra points if you tell nomenclature in German.
Really the most I found is periodic table, but how does compounds nomenclature work?
And maybe trivial naming, I didn’t dig deep
Any help will be appreciated:)

DCM exposure

I work in a lab that frequently uses DCM as a solvent, especially for cleaning. While cleaning, it often slides down the side of glassware and gets on my gloves. I usually try to change the gloves as soon as possible after. I’m wondering how serious this health risk is. Is it not that big of a deal to have frequent minor skin contact with DCM?

Need advice

Alright so I have been doing digging and decided to formulate my first batch of a (yes completely legal) 7-OH.

Now here is the link of the paper I plan on following: https://patents.google.com/patent/CN106967067A/en

I just have a few questions. First being how much would it cost with zero supplies to get those supplies. Just a rough price estimate. Second, what supplies in general are needed. And yeah that's it really just two questions.

Adding vinegar to Cetaphil cleanser - would it be relatively stable for a few days?

Maybe a strange question, but I’m curious about the chemistry here and wondered if someone in this sub could help. I want to experiment with adding a little bit of vinegar to a non-drying cleanser like Cetaphil to use on my legs when I shower, sort of a budget version of a body wash with some sort of exfoliating acid. Would this mixture be relatively stable for a few days to a week so I wouldn’t need to mix up a new batch every time I shower?

(Requisite disclaimer that I will be careful, start with small amounts, and am not asking for medical advice per rule 8 but about the stability of such a mixture over time!)

Nitric acid concentration/ evaporation rate

Me and another engineer are working on a passivation project involving nitric acid. We have 2 nitric acid tanks of 22 gallons kept at around 110 degrees Fahrenheit. One tank was initially at a concentration of 34 percent while the other was at 24 percent. It's been around a year and 2 months since they were originally mixed and we are trying to figure out the evaporation rate to determine what the concentration would be now. The nitric acid added to water was 60 percent concentration and the tanks are not exposed to any sunlight and kept close at all times. Any help on this would be appreciated since I am considered one of our chemists and I studied mechanical engineering in college.

Bleach+ammonia

So IDK if this like adequate to post in or not... But I was stupidly advised to spray bleach, on dried like cat pee areas and was told that it creates chlorimines, and the mixture sat for like an hour as I was trying to figure out what to do, it's like ventilated(?) now? I mean we have fans going, it's in a hallway, we live in a really old house so there really isn't accessible windows. Should it be fine? We have it going downstairs in a draft pattern towards an open window. But idk it still kinda smells, or as my partner says it smells a lot and I don't exactly know if it's super bad or not. Im in a room with good ventilation and it's like right next to the hallway. Should I be good?
