The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) conducted military drills in the Taiwan Straits, encircling the island by air following the U.S.’s announcement of $500 million in infrared search and tracking systems for F16 fighter jets.
The People’s Republic of China 🇨🇳 has repeatedly called these arms sales a futile violation of China’s sovereignty. Senior Colonel Zhang Xiaogang, a spokesperson at China's Ministry of National Defense, said on Friday that the PLA is always on high alert to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and safeguard peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits.

❗️New BRICS members will be Argentina, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, the UOL portal writes with reference to the draft final document of the summit.
A draft of the final statement, obtained by UOL and exclusively revealed, indicates that the names have already been defined.
The bloc currently includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

🇹🇼 💲 ⚔️ Taiwan plans to increase defense spending by 3.5% to a record 606.8 billion local dollars (19 billion US dollars) in 2024, according to the budget proposal submitted by the government to the island's leader, Tsai Ing-wen.
➡️This new spending figure represents the largest amount Taiwan has ever allocated to defense and is around 2.5% of GDP.
➡️If approved by Tsai Ing-wen, the defense budget will be referred to the Legislative Yuan, the island's Parliament, for a vote.
🇺🇸 The Taiwanese military's main arms supplier is the US.
In mid-July, US Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mark Milley said that Washington and its allies need to speed up arms supplies to Taiwan to increase its capacity of self defense.
💬 "The rate at which we, the United States, or other countries, assist Taiwan in improving its defense capabilities, I think probably needs to accelerate in the coming years," Milley said. According to the senior military officer, the island needs weapons such as air defense systems and those that can attack ships from land.

🔹Brazil's 🇧🇷 Treasury Minister Fernando Haddad, confirmed that the Brazilian gov't wants to help Argentina 🇦🇷with exports using the Chinese 🇨🇳Yuan, instead of the dollar for payment. A guarantee, will be activated only if there is a default by the Argentines even in yuan.
🔹The guarantee to be given will be from $100 million to $140 million USD 💵 equivalent, with the conversion (yuan to Brazilian real) made by Banco do Brasil in London. After the exchange, Brazilian exporters will receive payments directly in real.
🔹The proposal is beneficial for Brazilian exporters 🚢, who face difficulties in closing deals with Argentines due to the lack of USD Forex reserves in Argentina which resulted in heavy devaluation of the Argentina Peso. Both countries have said they wanted to "advance discussions on a common South American currency" to be used for financial and trade flows.
🔹Bolivia 🇧🇴 recently started using the Chinese 🇨🇳 yuan to pay for imports and exports with China becoming the third country in South America (after Argentina 🇦🇷 and Brazil 🇧🇷), to do so. The IMF may have to accept the Chinese yuan as a currency for countries to settle their obligations with the IMF following Argentina’s recent debt repayment in yuan, since the yuan is part of the IMF's SDR basket of currencies.
🔹Discussion recently began on the revival of the regional bloc previously known as the Union of South American Nations, or UNASUR. The Southern Common Market (Mercosur), {a customs union comprising of 12 Latin American countries with a free intra-zone trade & a common trade policy} have aired concerns that the South American region is seriously affected by the restrictions and regulations imposed by the US financial system.

The war between unipolarity and multipolarity continues to take shape.
On August 18th at Camp David, the US will host a trilateral summit with the heads of state of Japan 🇯🇵 and South Korea 🇰🇷 in a move that China 🇨🇳 has repudiated.
This will be first summit between the countries that specifically talks about their shared agenda in the region. The DPRK 🇰🇵 will receive heavy focus but many following the situation believe this is a smokescreen in a larger bid to build a “mini-NATO” against China.
Meanwhile, Chinese State Councilor and Defense Minister Li Shangfu will visit Russia, attend the Moscow Conference on International Security and visit Belarus from August 14 to 19.
Military alliances between nations in the multipolar world may seem far away, the talks and preparations are underway as the US’s unipolar militarism continues to expand and make new threats to global stability.

🇮🇩🇨🇳 Indonesia says it must prioritize safety of delayed China-funded bullet train
Indonesia is prioritizing safety ahead of the planned commercial launch of its China-funded $7.3 billion high-speed railway.
A flagship project of President Joko Widodo and part of China's Belt and Road Initiative, the 142-kilometre (88-mile) railway connecting Jakarta to the city of Bandung was originally set to be completed by 2019.
The consortium of Indonesian and Chinese state companies building the railway, PT KCIC, earlier this week postponed a planned free trial run by about two weeks to September 1 to ensure safety.
KCIC is already struggling to deal with the project's cost overrun, especially as one of the consortium members, Indonesia's construction firm PT Wijaya Karya, is facing its own debt troubles. The delay will only mean more lost money.
Negotiations for an additional $560 million loan from the Chinese Development Bank are underway to complete the remaining construction.

Per the Global Times, the secessionist Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) candidate for the 2024 regional election Lai Ching-te, also deputy regional leader, will make "stopovers in New York and San Francisco" during his August 12-18 trip to Paraguay, the Taiwan "external affairs authority" announced on Wednesday.
Lai’s visit threatens to enhance US-China tensions. China 🇨🇳 has ramped up military exercises and other measures to send a message to the U.S. over its support of separatism on the island.
Lai currently leads polls as the opposition KMT and Taiwan People’s Party have divided the vote thus far ahead of the January 2024 election. Recent data from the Taiwan Public Opinion Foundation (TPOF) indicates that nearly half of the population on the island is dissatisfied with DPP rule.
Chinese officials and experts warn that a victory for Lai and the DPP will accelerate US-led efforts to interfere in its internal affairs which could escalate into dangerous conflict.
11 Chinese 🇨🇳 and Russian 🇷🇺 vessels approached the Aleutian Islands and have since left without entering US territorial waters, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on Sunday, citing anonymous US officials.
While the vessels remained in international waters, spokesperson of the US northern command claimed this was a "historic first" and "highly provacative." Neither is true.
This is the third such naval patrol, the last taking place in September 2022. Chinese experts noted that the U.S. regularly violates China's territorial integrity through regular "freedom of navigation" exercises through the Taiwan Straits, urging the U.S. to reflect on itself instead of hyping non-existent dangers from China or Russia.
