Tens of thousands of taxpayer accounts hacked as CRA repeatedly paid out millions in bogus refunds

At the height of this year's tax season, the Canada Revenue Agency discovered that hackers had obtained confidential data used by one of the country's largest tax preparation firms, H&R Block Canada.

Imposters used the company's confidential credentials to get unauthorized access into hundreds of Canadians' personal CRA accounts, change direct deposit information, submit false returns and pocket more than $6 million in bogus refunds from the public purse, an investigation by CBC's The Fifth Estate and Radio-Canada has found. In one case, the hackers filed a return with a legitimate postal code, but a fake address on a non-existent Tomato Street.

Montreal dockworkers to launch 1-day strike amid labour standoff

Dockworkers at the Port of Montreal are planning a 24-hour work stoppage starting Sunday morning to increase pressure on management amid a labor dispute. The union, representing nearly 1,200 longshore workers, served notice for the complete work stoppage following previous strikes, including one on overtime shifts and a three-day strike at container terminals earlier this month.

This picket comes after a failed attempt by the federal labor minister to halt the work stoppages and introduce a special mediator, with contract negotiations currently stalled. The Maritime Employers Association expressed concerns that the ongoing pressure tactics are damaging operations and the port's reputation, highlighting that after 35 mediation meetings over the past 15 months, the two sides remain at an impasse.

'It's life and death': Shelter funding in London unclear as winter approaches

It's become an annual question in London, Ont., as the leaves turn and the temperature falls: How will the city's overnight homeless shelters be funded?

As it stands now, 90 beds shared between Ark Aid Mission's two shelters in East London are only funded until the end of December. City council voted in June to spend $1.8 million to fund Ark Aid until year's end. That expiration date is now weeks away, raising again the potential of shelter beds closing just as the life-threatening, sub-zero temperatures arrive.

National security cited as B.C. drone engineer's devices seized

A B.C. Supreme Court judge has granted an extraordinary order to seize electronic devices from a former employee of a Lower Mainland company specializing in anti-drone technology — citing fears China or Russia might be trying to access military secrets.

Documents contained in a partially sealed civil court file detail a scene in early September in which nine people — including bailiffs, lawyers, and representatives of Burnaby-based Skycope Technologies — descended on the man's home to seize laptops, phones and storage cards.

How an 11-year fence feud ballooned into $43K in tax bills and multiple lawsuits

Eleven years ago, the City of Ottawa tore down their brown plastic fence.
Today, grass has nearly covered the phantom post holes along the corner lots in the quiet suburb of Orléans. But the ordeal is far from over for the two families.
After multiple lawsuits and more than $43,000 in penalties accrued in their ongoing saga with the city, Mo Haider and Nitin Datta allege their families were victims of bylaw harassment and unfair treatment that has haunted them for the better part of the past decade.

2 Canadian families join American parents in lawsuit against social media giants

A lawsuit filed in Los Angeles accuses major social media companies of prioritizing engagement over the safety of young users, resulting in harm. This follows the suicide of B.C. teenager Amanda Todd in 2012 after facing online bullying and extortion. The lawsuit represents 11 families, including two from Canada, who claim their children suffered severe mental and physical issues due to social media. It names companies like Meta, Snapchat, TikTok's parent ByteDance, Discord, and Google, alleging they designed harmful products to increase engagement.

Attorney Matthew Bergman argues that the harm to children was a foreseeable result of these companies' choices. Google denied the allegations, stating it works with experts to ensure safety. Other companies have not commented, but typically assert they have measures in place to protect young users. This case is part of a rising number of lawsuits against tech giants regarding the effects of social media on children's well-being.

The Quebec Liberal Party has called for the French language commissioner to investigate the cancelling of some French-language training courses for newcomers to the province.

The letter asks commissioner Benoit Dubreuil to "investigate to ensure that the right to French language learning services, included in the Charter of the French Language, is respected," the release said.

BC community angry after beloved 'Hobo Hot Springs' destroyed, mayor says nearby resort to blame

Residents of the community of Harrison, B.C., are angry with the destruction of a grassroots hot spring. The locals had dubbed it "Hobo Hot Springs" a spot not far from the Harrison Resort, where natural hot water percolated up from the ground. Volunteers had built it up with rocks and logs and while the quality and temperature of the water fluctuated, many people enjoyed the chance for a free soak in the wilderness.

However, the pools have now been filled in with rocks and dirt, rendering them unusable.

117 homebuyers out millions, as Ontario builder admits to selling homes without legal approvals

More than 100 people are out tens of thousands of dollars each, after the developer of a pre-construction home project in Clearview, Ont., entered receivership.

Rayyan Shahid and his wife, who are expecting their first child next month, were looking forward to moving into their dream home next year at the Clearview site near Wasaga Beach, about 150 kilometres north of Toronto. But that won't be happening. The first-time homebuyer says that since December 2021, he's paid $100,000 of his life savings as a down payment on the home, which was supposed to have been built by Sunrise Acquisitions (Stayner) Inc. by April 2025.

Manitoba court awards losing party in lawsuit $100K in costs after City of Winnipeg 'acted shabbily'

In what appears to be a Manitoba first, a judge has awarded the losing party in a civil lawsuit $100,000 in costs because the successful party provoked the litigation, prolonged it and then reneged on a potential remedy.

Manitoba Court of King's Bench Justice Chris Martin has told the City of Winnipeg to pay $100,000 to a heavy machine operator who failed in his bid to sue for loss of income after being unjustly banned from working for the city. In a decision issued on Friday, Martin said there are special circumstances behind his decision to award costs to the operator, who was banned from working for the city in 2017 following "nasty and wrong" accusations of lying, trespassing and attempted theft on the job.
