UAE: Demand for non-alcoholic beverages sees more companies launch dry drinks
Globally, the demand for alcoholic drinks saw a slight dip in the past two years. Whereas non-alcoholic drink categories are booming, driven by Millennials and Gen Zs. Religious concerns, alcoholism, inflation and concerns over health effects are among the major reasons for people to gravitate towards ‘dry’ drinks.
In 2024, liquor producers witnessed a drop in revenue from alcoholic drinks worldwide. Distilled Spirits Council of the US reported that total spirits revenue dropped 1.1 per cent. Euromonitor International revealed that the alcoholic drinks market in 2023 saw a marginal total decline of 0.2 per cent.

Eid Al Fitr 2025 holiday in UAE: 5-day break expected as likely dates revealed
The UAE’s moon-sighting committee will convene on Ramadan 29 (Saturday, March 29) to search the skies for the crescent. If spotted, the holy month ends at 29 days and the Eid break is from Sunday, March 30, to Tuesday, April 1. When combined with the Saturday weekend which precedes the holiday, that’s a four-day break.
If the Moon is not spotted on March 29, the holy month of Ramadan will last 30 days. This year, the 30th of Ramadan has been declared a holiday as well in addition to three days for Eid. That means the break is from Sunday, March 30 (Ramadan 30), till Wednesday, April 2. When combined with the Saturday weekend that precedes the holiday, that’s a five-day break.

The Dubai Criminal Court has sentenced a woman identified as R.H. to six months in prison and imposed a fine of Dh20,000 on her. The Gulf national was arrested recently while she was drunk in a public place, and caused a riot. She had also assaulted members of the Dubai Police and directed obscene words at them.
In Dubai, consumption of alcoholic beverages is only permitted in restaurants or lounges that have a valid alcohol licence. It is prohibited to consume alcohol in public.

UAE residents can now use Jaywan to pay in 200 foreign countries with co-badge card
The UAE’s Al Etihad Payments, which operates the national card switch (UAESWITCH) and the domestic card scheme Jaywan, has signed an agreement with Visa to introduce co-badged 'Jaywan - Visa' debit and prepaid cards in the country.

The Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) is developing various hospitality projects and attractions, including an exciting new adventure park in Khor Fakkan. The park will have a zipline, adrenaline-pumping swings as well as hiking trails, its chief executive said.
“We are developing Al Jabel Adventures in Khor Fakkan, which has become a popular destination for hiking and scuba diving etc. We’ll have zipline, swings, Stobel gun rides, hiking and biking trails. It's an exciting project that we hope to deliver towards the end of this year,” Ahmed Obaid Al Qaseer, CEO of Shurooq, told Khaleej Times in an interview.

Dubai sisters launch mobile app Bearlot's Furry Friends to simplify pet adoption
For the uninitiated, pet adoption in the UAE can be challenging and often frustrating. With the sector largely unregulated, prospective pet parents often face inconsistent rules set by rescue groups and individuals, alongside adoption fees ranging from Dh2,000 to Dh6,000. Welfare groups, however, argue that many of the animals they rescue are found in dire conditions, requiring significant medical care. The rules and fees are in place to ensure the pets are not abandoned again.
Recognising these "pain points" and as pet parents, Dubai-based sisters Raya and Raneem Jaghoub left their full-time jobs to launch 'Bearlot's Furry Friends' (BFF) - a mobile app designed to simplify the adoption process for UAE residents. Named after their pet Chow Chows Bear and Merlot, the app connects rescue groups, potential adopters, and service providers, creating a more efficient, transparent, and streamlined adoption experience.

'Fines in 2026': Abu Dhabi mandatory pet registration to manage stray animals, risk of disease
Pet owners in Abu Dhabi should take advantage of the grace period offered by authorities to comply with the newly introduced mandatory pet registration system through the TAMM portal, to avoid facing fines for non-compliance next year, warned a municipal official.
“In cases of non-compliance, we will initially educate pet owners through warnings and guidance, with no fines being enforced this year,” said Dr Mariam Al Shamsi, Animal Welfare Support Analyst at the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT). “However, starting next year, penalties will be enforced in accordance with established regulations for those who fail to comply.”

UAE opens field hospital in South Sudan
The UAE has opened the 100-bed Madhol Field Hospital in Northern Bahr el Ghazal, South Sudan, to provide essential healthcare to vulnerable communities, including locals, South Sudanese returning from Sudan, and Sudanese refugees.
