Canada Post lost nearly $750M last year, future now uncertain
It's hard to imagine Canada without Canada Post, a company that has existed for 157 years. But there are serious questions raised about the survival of the Crown Corporation, as top executives held their annual general meeting this week and offered a bleak outlook.
The chair of the board warned the postal service is at a "critical juncture" and that its financial situation is "unsustainable," having lost nearly $750 million last year.
"Significant change is urgently needed," said Andre Hudon, the Canada Post board chair.

Public service union's court challenge of return-to-office order will proceed
Federal civil servants have been ordered to return to the office for at least three days a week starting September 9. In response, the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) challenged this directive in court. Federal Court Justice Glennys L. McVeigh has allowed the challenge to proceed, dismissing the government's attempt to halt the case. The government argued that employment disputes should be resolved through established processes first, but the court decided a full hearing is necessary to address both sides' arguments. PSAC views this decision as a significant victory, emphasizing the need for transparency and data behind the government's mandate.

Paralympic newsletter: Canada wins its first two medals, plus who to watch on Friday
Track cyclist Kate O'Brien got Canada on the board quickly on Day 1 in Paris, taking bronze in the women's C4-5 500m time trial. It's the second Paralympic medal for O'Brien, who took silver in this event at the 2021 Games in Tokyo. She also competed in the 2016 Olympics before a training crash the following year caused a serious brain injury.
Later, swimming star Aurélie Rivard captured her 11th Paralympic medal with a bronze in the women's 50m freestyle S10 event. That moves the 28-year-old Rivard into a tie with wheelchair racer Brent Lakatos for the most medals among Canadians competing in Paris.
Swimmer Shelby Newkirk came close to her first Paralympic podium, placing fourth in the women's 50m freestyle S6 final.

You might want to wait until fall for your next COVID-19 shot, doctors say. Here's why
Health Canada is set to complete its review of updated COVID-19 vaccines by "early autumn," following recent approvals in the U.S. for vaccines aimed at preventing severe illness and death. This review comes amid ongoing COVID-19 challenges, including new Omicron subvariants and recent outbreaks affecting athletes at the Paralympic Games in Paris.
Mandy Cohen from the U.S. CDC emphasized the importance of these updated vaccines due to the virus’s rapid mutation and declining immunity over time, particularly for high-risk groups. Immunology expert Dawn Bowdish from McMaster University noted that COVID-19 activity often peaks every three to six months, suggesting a potential increase in cases this winter. Public health experts recommend incorporating vaccination into fall health plans.

Danielle Smith, big government's unlikely fan
When Premier Danielle Smith put forth the ambition of building a multi-city passenger train network to link Banff, Calgary, Edmonton, and many other points, the questions came quick: Are you setting up Alberta taxpayers for a multibillion-dollar boondoggle or two?
Her answer wasn't typical fare from a conservative politician, let alone one with a libertarian symbol tattooed on her arm. Smith replied with a strong defence of government intervention.
"This is why people elect governments: To do the things that they can't do in the private sector, and that includes building massive new infrastructure that connects cities and requires this kind of major investment," Smith told reporters.

Plans for $2.4B carbon capture and storage project near Edmonton have been cancelled
Capital Power has abandoned its plans for a $2.4-billion carbon capture and storage project at its Genesee power plant due to financial impracticality, adding to a series of unsuccessful carbon capture ventures. This highlights doubts about the technology despite significant government investment. Federal Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault emphasized that while carbon capture remains a viable emissions reduction method, it is not a panacea for climate change. He urged industry to invest more in these projects, stressing that the government cannot fully fund all of them. Alberta Utilities Minister Nathan Neudorf expressed disappointment in the federal government's lack of support for carbon capture initiatives, emphasizing the need for realistic pathways to meet emissions targets. Capital Power, committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2045, stated that although the Genesee project was technically feasible, it was not economically viable. CEO Avik Dey suggested that advancements in technology and cost reduction could make such projects feasible in the future. Alberta's electricity grid, heavily reliant on natural gas, may require a combination of renewables, small modular nuclear reactors, and carbon capture to reduce emissions. In January, Capital Power announced plans to explore small modular nuclear reactor development with Ontario Power Generation to power Alberta's grid.

The news that a teenager was fatally shot by police early Friday morning has shocked many residents in communities across central Alberta.

1, 2 or 3? Michelin star restaurant rating system is coming to Quebec
The Michelin Guide is expanding to Quebec, marking its third Canadian market after Toronto and Vancouver. Michelin will assess restaurants across the province, not just in Montreal, with the first selection set to be revealed in 2025. Inspectors will make anonymous visits, potentially awarding up to three stars for excellence, as well as Bib Gourmand ratings for good food at lower prices. Michelin's arrival is supported by investments from local tourism and economic development organizations, with concerns about how Quebec's unique cuisine will be perceived. Despite some industry stress and staff shortages, the guide is expected to boost Quebec's visibility and tourism.

A Montreal program is saving people from homelessness — with the help of a cash 'boost'
A program run by a Montreal-based charity is trying to help Canadians avoid homelessness at an average cost of $11,000 per person. That's money well spent, according to Samuel Watts. "What we're doing is we're trying to capture and accompany people before they end up in the depths of homelessness," said Watts, CEO of Welcome Hall Mission.
The program, called Rapid Entry to Housing, is focused on helping Montrealers who need what Watts called a cash "boost" to get them into a home and avoid homelessness.

Pro-Palestinian student protesters set up camp at U of T
Pro-Palestinian protesters moved onto a greenspace in the heart of the University of Toronto's downtown campus Thursday, as the Israel-Hamas war nears its seven-month mark.
The group erected dozens of tents overnight in the recently renovated King's College Circle. The area was previously fenced off in anticipation of convocation ceremonies set to take place in about a month, according to the university.
The move comes as students at universities throughout North America have established their own protest encampments to demand an end to the ongoing war in Gaza.
In a statement, student protestors at U of T said they are calling on the post-secondary institution to reveal a complete list of its endowment's investments and divest from assets that "sustain Israeli apartheid, occupation and illegal settlement of Palestine." They also demanded the school cut ties with Israeli academic institutions that operate within the occupied West Bank.
