2 pedestrians killed in separate Outaouais collisions overnight
Two separate vehicle collisions on Saturday night in the Outaouais region have left two pedestrians dead. The first occurred at approximately 8:45 p.m. on Route 105 in Messines. According to the Sûreté du Québec, a pedestrian in her sixties was struck by a vehicle while crossing the road in the dark. She suffered serious injuries and was taken to Maniwaki hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The second accident occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. when another pedestrian was struck on Saint-Louis Street in the Touraine district in Gatineau, police said. Emergency services transported the victim to the Hull hospital, where they were pronounced dead. The area remained closed to traffic on Sunday morning while police investigated the incident.

Sask. mother calls for action to address daycare shortage for neurodivergent children
A Saskatoon mother and the owners of a daycare for neurodivergent children are calling for the provincial government to do more to increase child care spaces for children with complex needs.
Alicia Mann said she was "bogged down with worry" for four months searching for child care for her eldest son after his previous daycare terminated his spot. When they found out four-year-old Felix has autism, they would tell her they couldn't accommodate him, she said. "It was crushing," Mann told CBC's Saskatoon Morning last week. "It makes you feel as if your child is a burden and not someone who should be celebrated."

Kingston care hub shuts as police investigate attack that left 2 dead
On Friday morning, Kingston Police cruisers sat parked outside the city's Integrated Care Hub (ICH) and a tall fence that was erected overnight surrounded the site, lined with tents and other temporary shelters.
It was a very different scene than the previous morning when the area was wrapped in yellow police tape and paramedics stood by as police officers engaged in a roughly six-hour standoff with the suspect in a deadly assault. Two people were killed and a third remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries after a series of attacks Thursday morning that investigators say unfolded in an encampment near the Montreal Street facility.

Bike theft is an issue in Saskatoon. There is a Facebook page, "stolen bikes saskatoon," with 3,200 members who post advice on avoiding thefts and photos of stolen wheels. The advocacy group Saskatoon Cycles has a newsletter that encourages people to register their bikes with the city police. According to statistics from police, the average number of reported bike thefts has been about 800 a year since 2019. To date this year, 426 bikes have been reported missing.

Parents outraged after girl, 14, forced off Porter Airlines flight
The parents of a 14-year-old girl say they're outraged after their daughter was removed from a Porter Airlines flight last month and left to fend for herself for the next 24 hours — without compensation or supervision from airline staff.
Camryn Larkan was flying alone for only the second time on Aug. 30, headed home to Victoria, B.C., after visiting a friend and family in Toronto.
She boarded the plane and was sitting in her seat ready for take-off, when a flight attendant told her there was a problem. She needed to grab her bags and get off the aircraft.
"I was kind of just like really confused ... I thought I was coming back to my seat. I thought that they were just going to take my bags," Camryn said. "As soon as I got off the plane and I saw that the door had closed, that's when I started to like get really anxious."
Camryn said she later learned the plane took off without her and some other passengers due a weight imbalance. She was rebooked on a flight to Victoria at the same time the next day, and the airline sent her on her way. Her dad, who had brought her to the airport, rushed back to pick her up.

Leading business groups ask Liberals to send Air Canada pilot dispute to binding arbitration
Dozens of Canadian business associations across the country have signed a letter urging the Liberal government to prevent Air Canada pilots from striking by sending the labour dispute to binding arbitration.
The letter — which was signed by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, the Retail Council of Canada, Food Producers of Canada and the Canadian Toy Association, among others — warns a strike would be "devastating" for the economy.
"The federal government must … be prepared to act in advance to prevent yet another damaging disruption by referring the matter to binding arbitration where a neutral arbitrator can resolve any outstanding issues," the letter says.

3 Saskatoon police officers could face discipline after using police database for personal snooping
Three Saskatoon Police Service officers are facing potential discipline after being caught snooping on personal information stored in the force's database for personal, non-official reasons, according to the police service and Saskatchewan's privacy watchdog.
One officer has had their access to the database revoked, and the matter for all three officers is currently under "administrative review," a spokesperson from the police service told CBC News in an email Tuesday.

London convenience store owners mark first week of alcohol sales under new provincial rules
Ayoub's store, Fresh & Fast Food Mart, is one of more than 140 London convenience stores that can now sell beer, cider, wine and ready-to-drink cocktails since Sept. 5 as part of the province's alcohol sale expansion plans.
The Ford government fast-tracked its plans by more than a year, allowing upwards of 4,000 stores across Ontario to sell alcoholic beverages alongside tobacco, lottery tickets, candy, gum and other convenience store mainstays. To do so, the province had to fork over more than $200 million to The Beer Store to break a 10-year agreement that was due to end in 2026.

Hiker in hospital after bear attack in Crowsnest Pass
A Calgary man is in hospital after a bear attacked him while hiking in the Crowsnest Pass Friday morning, according to Alberta RCMP.
Cst. Cory Riggs, an RCMP public information officer, said the 45-year-old man was hiking alone in a remote area near Window Mountain Lake, which is located near the Alberta/B.C. border, about 25 kilometres northwest of Coleman, Alta. He used a Garmin SOS device to signal for help, Riggs said.

A London, Ont., man faces charges after 18 people were defrauded of nearly $2 million, police say.
A victim first contacted the London Police Service (LPS) early this year after realizing that a large sum of money the individual had invested with a financial adviser dating back to 2003 was missing. The financial adviser was said to have collected investments from a number of people, police said, but did not invest the money obtained. Through the course of the investigation, the LPS financial crime unit determined a total of 18 people were defrauded of a total of around $1,988,000.

Police in northern Nova Scotia are probing whether more than 40 rifles and shotguns discovered during a large drug bust this summer at two rural homes are part of a weapons trafficking scheme and hope cellphones seized during the raids will offer more clues.

Canfor transfers forest tenure in B.C. to 2 First Nations
Forestry giant Canfor has sold its logging license for B.C.'s Mackenzie Timber Supply Area, which covers about 64,000 square kilometers, to the McLeod Lake Indian Band and the Tsay Keh Dene Nation. Each First Nation will receive a share of the license, allowing them to harvest over 430,000 cubic meters of timber annually. Asian sunscreens are all the rage, so why can't you buy them in Canada?
Nancy Le, 25, has been using facial sunscreens since she was a teenager. But unlike people who buy sunscreen from stores, the Vancouver nursing student is one of many who use online retailers.
That's because the sunscreen she uses, which is made in Asia, contains ingredients that aren't approved by Health Canada.
"The other sunscreens that I tend to like that are available here in Canada, they tend to be a little bit more expensive. So I find even drugstore brands ... it's going to be at least $30," she said.
These days, she uses a Korean-based brand that works as a moisturizer and sunscreen.
"When it's on sale, it costs me $10 a bottle," Le said. "And with sunscreen, you are recommended to reapply it every two hours, especially if you're in the sun. And with the amount that you're using, it can really add up."
She's not alone.
Asian sunscreens have become all the rage online — particularly among those interested in skin care — but Health Canada has not approved them, leaving consumers looking for those products to purchase them online or overseas.
