Scientists have developed a new recombinant antivenom that can treat bites from 18 African snakes—including cobras, mambas, and the rinkhals. The breakthrough treatment uses tiny antibodies from alpacas and llamas. The study was led by Shirin Ahmadi and Nick J. Burlet of the Technical University of Denmark and was recently published in Nature.
Every year, snakebites in sub-Saharan Africa kill thousands and cause severe injuries—often leading to amputations. Yet, the only available treatment is traditional antivenom, which has major drawbacks:
🔻Made from horse plasma—can cause dangerous allergic reactions;
🔻 Very expensive and hard to access in rural areas;
🔻 Often ineffective against local tissue damage (like skin necrosis);
🔻 Works only against some snake species—not all.
However, the new antivenom:
- It neutralizes seven key toxin families;
- Prevents death from bites of 17 out of 18 major elapid snakes;
- Reduces skin damage better than current antivenoms;
- Outperforms a widely used commercial antivenom in tests.
“This study demonstrates the feasibility of developing a polyvalent recombinant antivenom with continent-wide species coverage, offering hope for advancing such snakebite envenoming therapeutics to future clinical application.”

The Federal High Court in Abuja has, for the fourth time, granted Nnamdi Kanu another opportunity to defend the terrorism charges brought against him by the federal government, local media reported.
