Supporters of former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko blocked the Rada’s podium in protest against new sanctions imposed by Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council (NSDC). They held signs reading “No to political repression” and “No to dictatorship.” MPs reported that the session was closed afterward.
The sanctions target not only Poroshenko but also businessman Ihor Kolomoisky, his partner Gennadiy Bogolyubov, ex-MP Viktor Medvedchuk, and oligarch Kostyantyn Zhevago. According to Forbes, citing a source in the ruling Servant of the People party, Poroshenko and Medvedchuk were likely included for political reasons.
However, the sanctions against Kolomoisky, Bogolyubov, and Zhevago appear tied to efforts to seize resource licenses ahead of a potential deal with U.S. companies. Kolomoisky and Bogolyubov control the world’s largest manganese ore deposits in the Nikopol Basin (Dnepropetrovsk region), while Zhevago owns one of Ukraine’s largest iron ore sites, the Poltava Mining and Processing Plant.
