Is there a Major league sports equivalent to some NBA centers being horrendous at free throws?
Now this obviously does not apply to all centers. There have been many great FT shooting centers in NBA history (Yao ming, Sikma, Jokic, Towns, Embiid, ) but its historically been more common that big men, even star big men, are poor free throw shooters despite free throws being such a huge part of the game. It has got me thinking whether there is an equivalent in other major pro sports where players/stars perform rather poorly in a particular aspect of the sport despite their overall talent for the sport in its entirety?

Friedell Following Curry’s extension, Butler and Draymond have expressed interest in finishing their careers with the Warriors, but doing so could require them to return on substantially smaller contracts. Curry’s decision to sign for less than the Max allow GS additional financial flexibility.
Stephen Curry’s new two-year, $116 million extension keeps the superstar with the Golden State Warriors through the 2028-29 season and gives the franchise greater flexibility to build around him during the final years of his career.
According to Nick Friedell of The Athletic, Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green have also expressed interest in finishing their careers with the Warriors. However, keeping both veterans could require them to accept significantly smaller contracts. “Butler and Green have expressed interest in retiring with the Warriors, though doing so could require them to return on substantially smaller contracts,” Friedell wrote.
Friedell also highlighted Curry’s decision to sign for less than the maximum available as a move that provides Golden State with additional financial flexibility.
The Warriors will now look to maximize that flexibility while trying to build a competitive roster around Curry. Golden State has added Butler and Kristaps Porzingis in recent seasons, but has yet to establish itself as a championship contender.

Jalen Duren's full name is "Jalen Anthony Duren", which is an anagram of "no deal then Jan", alluding to the fact that if he signs the qualifying offer he won't be eligible to be traded until January 15
The CBA states that a free agent who signs with an NBA team can’t be traded for three months or until December 15, whichever is later. Moreover, if a player if signed using Bird or Early Bird rights and his new deal meets any one of the following criteria he won't be eligible to be traded until January 15:
* got a raise exceeding 20% (Jalen Duren's salary was $6.4M last season. His qualifying offer is worth $9.6M which is 50% higher than his salary last year.)
* more than the minimum (obviously bruh)
* and their team was over the cap (obviously bruh)
Obviously he still has to consent to a trade but this seems to not be an issue for him.

Heading into the 2025-2026 season, ESPN ranked Walker Kessler as the 98th best player in the NBA. Now, he is ranked 73rd. Kessler ascended those 25 spots by playing five games, having season ending surgery, and joining the Lakers
Thought this was kind of funny, they must have really seen something from Kessler in those five games in October and early November. Kessler averaged 14-10-1.8 in those games for what it’s worth.

An NBA spokesman said the league’s investigation into Trent’s contract is ongoing and declined to answer further questions. The Bucks and Klutch Sports Group — Trent’s representing agency — have declined comment, but two sources with direct knowledge of the interviews taking place as part of the investigation said both the Bucks and Klutch are cooperating.
The NBA hired national investigations law firm Hecker Fink to examine the circumstances surrounding Trent’s contract. The league typically hires white-shoe firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz for work like this, but two concurrent cap-circumvention cases are atypical.
The details that caught the NBA’s attention regarding Trent’s deal are this: Trent, 27, had signed two prior contracts for much less money with Milwaukee amid the previous two summers of 2024 and 2025 (including for the league minimum in 2024). There were player options attached to both deals, and he declined them both, setting up larger paydays. The first was a modest increase, with his 2025-26 salary jumping from $2.6 million to $3.7 million. Then, in the run-up to his new contract, which will pay him more than $15 million annually, he muddled through his worst statistical campaign since his rookie campaign from eight years ago. Trent averaged 8.1 points on 39 percent shooting in 21 minutes per game.

With training camp a week away, there is finally movement in the strained negotiation between restricted free-agent center Jalen Duren and the Detroit Pistons.
Yet still, with the Eastern Conference contender showing renewed interest in getting a deal done and the 22-year-old, All-NBA center pushing for a bigger payday, the gap between the sides remains. Per league sources, the Pistons upped their offer by $10 million in recent days – from the five-year, $190 million proposal that was put forth in August to a five-year, $200 million deal that has no team or player options and is fully guaranteed. Those sources, like others in this story, spoke on the condition of anonymity.
With Duren known to be displeased during the process, in addition to the prospect of him taking a one-year qualifying offer ($9.6 million) before the Oct. 1 deadline, the move marked the first sign of progress in nearly six weeks. But Duren, who is eligible to receive a five-year, $287 million deal and was known to be seeking a contract worth at least $200 million, has thus far rebuffed the offer. With the two sides having gone weeks on end without communicating during this process, the waiting game continues as the season nears.

What’s more, the league’s recent announcement that the salary cap had increased by $2 million for the 2027-28 season changed the math in his favor as it relates to future finances. If he were to take the qualifying offer for next season and secure a four-year, max-salary deal elsewhere next summer, for example, the combined earnings in that five-year period would be nearly as much as what Detroit is currently offering ($198.8 million versus $200 million).
That revelation begs a relevant and obvious question: Does Duren still want to play with the Pistons? Rival teams have indicated for quite some time that Duren is very interested in playing elsewhere, and his absence from multiple team events in the summer is certainly a sign of his discontent.
While, on the surface, it may seem Duren’s contract negotiations with the Pistons have dominated the 2026 offseason, the disagreement dates back roughly a year. Had Duren and the Pistons come to an agreement on a rookie-scale extension last summer, the way they did with Ausar Thompson last week, this situation would cease to exist.

Mazzulla spoke at a Life Surge event in Portland, Maine, last September and was scheduled for another Oct. 17 in Hartford. He said he informed the organization that he will no longer attend, and he requested that his image be removed from the organization’s website, too.
“I’m always looking for partnerships to be able to share my faith,” Mazzulla said by phone. “It was a platform I thought made some sense for us, and when this comes out, you take your stand and move forward.”
Investigative reporter Pablo Torre, on an episode of his “Pablo Torre Finds Out” podcast released Thursday, reported on football star Tim Tebow’s deep connections to Life Surge, which holds financial literacy events across the country featuring celebrity speakers and entertainers. It allegedly preys on attendees by pressuring them to pay as much as $50,000 for financial mentorship and coaching.

Mazzulla, whose strong Christian faith is well known, said Life Surge initially contacted his representatives at Creative Artists Agency about him joining its roster of speakers.
He was scheduled to help headline its Hartford gathering at PeoplesBank Arena, which is described on the organization’s website as “a one-day life-changing event where thousands of local Christians gather to learn why and how to create and multiply financial resources for Kingdom impact.”
Said Mazzulla: “Once these allegations came out, I just completely backed out of it. I’m not showing up there and obviously don’t support any of the allegations or things that they’re accused of, and I’m moving forward.”
Mazzulla said he is focused on the attendees who may have been coerced by Life Surge and hopes they will have the resources and guidance needed to regroup. He also will not let this incident affect his mission to do good through his religion.
“It’s an unfortunate situation, but my purpose is to use my platform for a positive impact on faith,” Mazzulla said. “The risk you take is situations like this happen. The most important thing is to No. 1, focus on the people who were wronged and No. 2, do the best job you can authentically and morally and ethically to share your faith without negatively impacting people.”

The qualifying offer for Duren is ~$10m. The first season of Detroit's latest offer would be ~$40m. If he took that $30m difference and invested it, he would earn more over the next 5 years than he would by taking the QO this year and getting the max from another team next year.
He can defer his taxes. But even if he doesn't and let's say he only has a $15 million difference to invest after paying his income taxes, that $15 million compounded over 5 years with an average annual rate of return of approximately 8% would yield an additional $7m.
That's only looking at the $30m difference for the first year alone, and that's only looking at the compounding interest of the amount he'd be left with after taxes, and using a fairly conservative 8% rate of growth.
Looking at it a different way, if he took the full $40 million from the first year of the deal that Detroit is offering him and invested the $20 million he was left with after tax for 5 years with an 8% annual return, the $20 million post-tax income from that first year alone would become $29 million in five years.
Meanwhile, if he took the full 10 million from his qualifying offer and invested the $5 million he was left with after tax for 5 years with the same 8% annual return, that $5 million post-tax income would become $7 million.

Detroit inking Thompson to a five-year, $155 million deal, which will begin paying him an average annual value of $31 million, added a layer to Duren’s contract negotiations. As did Thompson’s twin brother Amen, who agreed to sign a five-year, $208 million contract to stay with the Houston Rockets earlier this month.
While Amen Thompson was a Defensive Player of the Year finalist, neither Thompson twin earned an All-Star or All-NBA selection last season, while Duren got the nod on both. For Duren, it’s quite clear he sees his value in a higher tier than both twins considering last regular-season’s accolades. Yet, as the Pistons could certainly contest, Duren’s well-chronicled postseason struggles changed the way he was perceived around the league just as the negotiations were about to begin.
On the Pistons’ end, it’s understandable they don’t want to financially overcommit to a player they aren’t convinced will recreate his regular-season effectiveness in the playoffs. That’s especially so when Cunningham, who was given a five-year, $269 million extension two summers ago, is set to make $50.1 million next season and $53.8 million in 2027-28.
There’s a steep price to be paid no matter which direction it goes. And less time than ever for Duren and the Pistons to get a deal done.
