1. NEED as a MODAL VERB (semi-modal)

Key features

Mostly used in negative and question forms

Followed by a bare infinitive (verb without to)

Common in British English

Refers to lack of necessity


Form

Subject + need + base verb

a) Negative form

need not / needn’t + base verb

✔ You needn’t worry.
✔ She need not come tomorrow.

👉 Meaning: It is not necessary.

❌ No -s added

Modal need has no true past form.
Instead, we use:

need not have + past participle

This is the most common form in modern English.

3. Important Meaning Difference (EXAM TRAP ⚠️)

Compare:

✔ She didn’t need to apologize.
→ She probably did not apologize.

✔ She needn’t have apologized
→ She did apologize, but it was unnecessary.

👉 This distinction is very important for IELTS & advanced grammar.

Need + V-ing = passive meaning
