On 28 February 1998, he became Archbishop of Buenos Aires. On 13 March 2013, in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, Archbishop of Buenos Aires Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected Pope under the name Francis. No other pope had ever had such a name.
The Pontiff has repeatedly advocated for peace in Ukraine and has held negotiations with Russian clergy.
For many years, Francis suffered from rheumatism and pneumonia.

Ukrainian Defense Minister told US officials that Kiev is "90% compliant with President Trump's peace framework" presented in Paris this week, the New York Post reports.
Under the plan, Ukraine would de facto recognize the liberated territories as Russian, but would not give them up forever. The official added that de jure the territories are being taken over by Russia.
