Meme coins resurge

Meme coins are making waves again in the cryptocurrency market, as their trading volume skyrocketed to a two-year high of $2.3 billion last week, according to Dune. Notable meme coins contributing to this surge include SHIB, ELON, FLOKI, and the freshman rock star PEPE, when all-time meme leader DOGE shows modest results.

This resurgence is far from random; it continues a stable trend of meme coins’ popularity surging in tandem with Bitcoin's growth phases. Historically, meme coins have seen significant trading volume spikes during Bitcoin's peak values. This was observed during Bitcoin's bull runs in April-May 2021 and October-November 2021, when its price reached $63,000 and $64,000 accordingly.

The rise in Bitcoin's value often triggers what's known as the «alt season» — a period of significant growth of altcoins. However, based on the alt season index, despite the spike of meme coins, today is definitely a Bitcoin season.

Worth noting that the Ethereum-based meme coin community is growing rapidly, boasting a holder count of 2 million users as of May 2023. This data can be explained by the diversification, since investors seek assets beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum.

Huge Shapella upgrade for Ethereum! What’s next on the to-do list?

● EIP-4844 Cancun hardfork;
● Distributed validator technology;
● Proposer-builder separation (PBS).

EIP-4844 Cancun hardfork

EIP-4844 is a hardfork that addresses Ethereum's main problem — scalability. It allows on-chain use cases like games and social media that require higher transaction loads. Unfortunately, current rollup chains (like Arbitrum or Optimism) are inadequate for such purposes. That led project builders to compromise decentralization in their designs. EIP-4844's sharding proposal splits the network into databases to significantly increase transaction space, making rollups using costs 20 times cheaper.

The update is slated for Q3-Q4 2023.

Distributed validator technology

Operating an Ethereum node requires solo staking of 32 ETH — a challenge for solo operators. Distributed validator technology (DVT) enables “squad staking” by allowing a team to collectively stake different amounts of ETH and run a node through multi-party computation (MPC). DVT reduces the financial barrier for individuals or small DAOs to participate as validators on Ethereum. Plus, DVT makes node validation more robust, as distributed validators can stand in for each other when hardware malfunctions.

The technology is expected to be ready by Q3 2023.

Proposer-builder separation

Some validators sell priority access to block building to arbitrage bots on the underground bribery market. These attacks, known as Maximal-extractable-value (MEV) attacks, create a serious threat to Ethereum’s decentralization, having already extracted an estimated $676 million pre-Merge. Proposer-builder separation (PBS) aims to divide the tasks of proposing and building the blocks.

It won't be ready until 2025.

Tournament with GoodCrypto
