We have already published 2 posts on what blockchain is and how it works. Here is also an explanation of the main blockchain types.
Blockchains can be roughly divided into public, private, hybrid, and consortium.

Public blockchain allows anyone to join the platform, see the transaction history and vote for changes in the network. This type of blockchain is built on trust and transparency, and their information is available to everyone. Yet, they can be pretty slow.

A private blockchain is a network with limited access or a network controlled by a single entity. Private blockchains have the same functionality as public blockchains, but users need access permission. Private companies and corporations are the most common users of this blockchain type.

Hybrid blockchains combine the qualities of public and private types, which allows their owners to limit access to specific blocks. In such blockchains, the second party can only identify the user's identity during transactions. Validators can be either a closed circle of persons or anyone.

Blockchain consortia are private networks with limited access only to a specific group of users. In a blockchain consortium, several equal parties manage the network at once. Usually, it is an association of financial institutions and IT companies with the aim of joint research on blockchain technology.

How does blockchain work?

Blockchain is a decentralized and distributed digital ledger with data. This technology stores transactional info or data in blocks linked to each other. Together they form a consistent chain of blocks.

Let’s figure out how the blockchain with the Proof-of-Work consensus mechanism works.
Nodes and miners run the blockchain. A node is a computer that has a copy of all blockchain transactions. There can be hundreds of nodes in a network. They ensure the authenticity of new transactions by verifying them against the info they have.

Miners (or validators) generate new blocks and add them to the existing network. They organize all incoming transactions into blocks and add them to the blockchain. Also, each miner stores a copy of the blockchain to protect the information from being lost or falsified. Miners get rewards for their service.

The network chooses a miner for each new block to complete the task. The consensus mechanism is the algorithm that assigns the task to the miner. They can be different. The most famous are Proof-of-Stake (PoS), Proof-of-Work (PoW), and others.
