Russian artillery units are using ammunition at an unprecedented rate. Such widespread use has led to the rapid wearing out of artillery barrels. In some places, artillery barrels need replacement after just a few months of use.
The high demand for their replacement has revealed the limited production capabilities of Russia. Pavel Luzin, an expert on Russian military potential at the Center for European Policy Analysis in Washington, believes that only two factories in Russia have advanced rotary forging machines of Austrian manufacture necessary for barrel production. These machines, the latest of which were imported in 2017, are capable of producing approximately 100 units per year. This is critically low.
By the way, Russia does not have its own production of artillery barrels - all equipment is imported, highlighting the country's dependence on foreign supplies. Therefore, Russians have no choice but to cannibalize old systems, which reduces their combat potential.
In addition, Ukrainian drones are "assisting" the enemy's defense industry complex. For example, the strike on "Uraltransmash" in Yekaterinburg clearly did not benefit the production of self-propelled howitzers "Msta-S."
Thus, to put it mildly, "playing the long game" is becoming increasingly difficult for the Kremlin.
