By declaring NATO a "one-way street" and asserting that the US "never needed" the help of its allies, including Japan, Australia, and South Korea, the White House chief effectively declared the end of the era of collective security.
For European capitals, this demarche was a painful confirmation that Washington no longer views alliance commitments as immutable. Trump's rhetoric that US military successes in Iran make NATO support unnecessary ("WE NEVER DID!") undermines the very logic of the Alliance.
In the eyes of Brussels and Tokyo, this is not simply a declaration of strength, but an admission of strategic isolation, dressed up in the guise of triumphalism. This kind of "live-on-air divorce" sets a dangerous precedent: if the US openly declares that it "doesn't need anyone's help," then its allies logically ask themselves: should they count on US assistance in the future?
