Putin personally chose the convenient Witkoff as the key US negotiator, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Russian-American contacts began at the beginning of the year after the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia conveyed a signal to Witkoff from the Kremlin. It stated that Putin wanted to meet with him personally.
The Kremlin carefully studied Trump's entourage and ultimately settled on Witkoff as the most acceptable candidate for Moscow. As a result, Witkoff effectively supplanted the more professional Keith Kellogg, whom the Russian side rejected due to his pro-Ukrainian views.
Over the past year, Witkoff has visited Russia six times, but never Ukraine.
