Venture Capital

This isn't a meme stock.

It's a company that's lost 63% since its high - $500B in market cap.

It's the company spending $55B a year building the data centres that power AI.

It's taken on $167B in debt to do it - nearly double what it owed 2 years ago.

The biggest single corporate bet on the AI thesis.

And the market is pricing it like the thesis is already dead.

🇨🇳 China aims to produce 70% of its AI chips domestically by 2030

According to Morgan Stanley, China's AI chip self-sufficiency could rise from 10% in 2021 to 70% by 2030. After a brief plateau around 2025-2026, growth is expected to accelerate as domestic production scales.

U.S. export restrictions have pushed China to build its own semiconductor supply chain, from chip manufacturing to equipment, materials, and testing.

Companies positioned to benefit include SMIC, Hua Hong Semiconductor, ACM Research, Kingsoft Cloud, and equipment makers Naura Technology and AMEC. Investors looking for broader exposure can also use ETFs focused on Chinese technology and semiconductor companies.

The AI race is no longer just about building better chips. It's also about who can build the entire supply chain.

📈 The S&P 500 has never been this concentrated

At the peak of the dot-com bubble, it took 32 stocks to make up half of the S&P 500. Today, it takes just 24, making the index more concentrated than at any point in its history.
Since ChatGPT launched, 42 AI-related companies have generated up to 75% of the index's returns, profit growth, and capital spending.

That concentration is becoming a bigger risk. Short interest across the S&P 500 has climbed to its highest level since 2010, while AI infrastructure spending continues to outpace cash flow at some companies.

When a small group of stocks drives most of the market, any disappointment can have an outsized impact on the entire index.

🚨 Big Tech's hidden debt has reached $1.65 trillion

A Nikkei analysis found that America's largest tech companies now have $1.65 trillion in off-balance-sheet obligations, exceeding their reported debt of $1.35 trillion.

The commitments come from long-term AI infrastructure projects, including data center leases and GPU orders that accounting rules allow companies to keep off their balance sheets until certain conditions are met.

Meta reportedly has $420 billion in these obligations, while Oracle's total reached $273 billion as it expands AI infrastructure with OpenAI.

The risk is that if AI demand slows, these commitments could eventually become real liabilities just as new data centers come online.

📉 How leverage turned South Korea's AI boom into a market crash

South Korea went from the world's best-performing stock market to a 30% correction in less than a month. Nearly $1.3 trillion in market value disappeared after years of gains driven by just Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, which together accounted for more than 50% of the KOSPI.

The AI story itself didn't break. Both companies remain global leaders in AI memory chips, and demand for HBM continues to grow. The problem was market structure. Retail investors piled into leveraged single-stock ETFs, owned around 92% of these products, and borrowed nearly ₩60 trillion to amplify their bets.

When global semiconductor sentiment weakened, leverage turned a normal correction into a cascade of forced selling. More than 1.2 million investors reportedly faced margin calls, while foreign investors had already pulled almost $110 billion from Korean equities. Rising inflation and a surprise interest rate hike added further pressure.

The lesson goes beyond South Korea. Strong fundamentals can drive a rally, but when too much leverage and too many investors crowd into the same trade, market structure often matters more than the underlying business.

📣JD Vance says America needs fewer office workers and more skilled trades

U.S. Vice President JD Vance argues that too many people pursue 4-year degrees only to end up in what he called "fake jobs" that create little real value. He believes the U.S. should place greater emphasis on skilled trades instead.

Speaking with Mike Rowe, Vance said careers like plumbing, construction, and manufacturing deserve the same respect as traditional white-collar professions. He also noted that many office jobs became harder to justify during the pandemic.

The debate comes as demand for trade careers continues to rise. Rowe said applications for his skilled trades scholarship program increased 10x over the past year, yet only 2 workers replace every 5 who retire. At the same time, college graduates still earn about 60% more than high school graduates on average.

The discussion is shifting from whether college matters to which skills the economy will value most over the next decade.

Just 4% of U.S. stocks created almost all market wealth

A study of 29,754 U.S. stocks listed between 1926 and 2025 found that the market created $90.96 trillion in shareholder wealth. Almost all of it came from just 1,082 companies, while the remaining 96% created virtually none.

The typical stock actually lost 6.87%, 59% of companies destroyed shareholder value, and only 41% outperformed Treasury bills.

The biggest wealth creators were:
🖱Apple ($5.02T)
🖱Nvidia ($4.58T)
🖱Microsoft ($4.03T)
🖱Alphabet ($3.57T)
🖱Amazon ($2.27T)

Apple
and Nvidia alone generated 10.6% of all shareholder wealth created since 1926.

Market concentration is also increasing. In 2016, it took 89 companies to account for half of all market wealth. Today, it takes just 46.

The biggest winners have always driven long-term market returns. The difference today is how concentrated those winners have become.

💼 Investing isn't just about picking the right stocks

One of the biggest mistakes investors make is keeping the same portfolio for decades. Your financial goals, income, and ability to recover from market downturns all change over time, and your asset allocation should change with them.

In your 20s and 30s, time is your biggest advantage, so many investors focus more on growth. As retirement gets closer, preserving capital and reducing volatility often become just as important as maximizing returns.

There is no perfect portfolio for every age or every investor. Risk tolerance, income, and financial goals matter as much as your birth year.

The best portfolio is one that matches both your timeline and your ability to stay invested when markets become volatile.

🔽 $2.8 TRILLION has been wiped out from stocks, gold, silver, and crypto in the last 24 hours

Here's why everything is crashing:

🖱 Alphabet's earnings disappointed investors last night.

It raised its 2026 AI spending plan to $195-205 billion, and tech stocks are crashing on fears that AI spending is growing faster than profits.

🖱 Oil prices jumped to 42 day high today after Houthi rebels attacked Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea.

🖱 The 10-year Treasury yield hit 4.714% today, its highest level since Jan 2025.

🖱 Odds of a Fed rate hike in September jumped to 82%, up from just 20% two weeks ago.

🖱 Trump told Axios he's close to ordering a "massive attack" on Iran, bigger than the last one.

Everything is feeding into the same fear, and every market is crashing because of it.

💰 A $100K check that became a $15 billion investment

In 1998, Andy Bechtolsheim, co-founder of Sun Microsystems, watched a demo of Google's PageRank and wrote a $100,000 check to "Google Inc." in less than 30 minutes.

The company hadn't even been incorporated yet.

Google went public in 2004, turning his stake into roughly $300 million. Instead of selling, Bechtolsheim kept his shares, and their value has since grown to more than $15 billion.

The investment is one of Silicon Valley's most successful angel bets, showing how early conviction can matter more than months of due diligence.

🇺🇸 Trump proposes 50% tariffs on Canadian imports

Donald Trump announced plans to impose 50% tariffs on a wide range of Canadian imports starting August 19, using Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 after earlier tariffs were blocked by the Supreme Court.

The proposed tariffs would apply to many goods previously exempt under the USMCA, while Canada is already considering a "dollar for dollar" response if the measures take effect.

If implemented, the move could reignite a U.S.-Canada trade war and put renewed pressure on prices and cross-border supply chains.

📊 Global recession risk drops to a 4-year low

MacroMicro's Global Recession Probability Index has fallen to its lowest level since January 2021, with the current reading near 20%, well below the 50% recession threshold.

The improvement largely reflects the recent drop in oil prices from $120 to $70, which helped cool inflation and improve macro data.

If oil keeps rising again on renewed Middle East tensions, that trend could reverse quickly.

🛢Oil could put inflation back at the center of the market

Inflation had started easing as oil prices fell after the June ceasefire. That trend is now at risk of reversing as tensions in the Middle East escalate again.

The Strait of Hormuz, which carries about 20% of global oil supply, has seen tanker traffic drop sharply. Reuters also reports that Iran has told the Houthis to prepare for a possible closure of the Bab el-Mandeb strait if the conflict widens. Together, the two routes handle roughly 27% of global oil shipments.

The U.S. also has less room to respond than in previous crises. The Strategic Petroleum Reserve has fallen to 326 million barrels, its lowest level since 1983.

At the same time, the Federal Reserve is already concerned about inflation, with several policymakers still projecting higher rates rather than cuts.

If oil prices keep rising, inflation could quickly become the market's biggest risk again.

CENTCOM says it targeted Iranian military facilities, air defenses, missile and drone storage sites and IRGC forces in strikes carried out just an hour ago.

At least two US service members were killed and another remains missing after the attack in Jordan, prompting the US to intensify its strikes against Iran.

🎤 Trump's teleprompter operator allegedly bet on his speeches

According to ABC News, the operator who has managed Donald Trump's teleprompter since 2016 allegedly placed more than $100,000 in bets on Kalshi's prediction markets using advance knowledge of presidential speeches.

Investigators say Gabriel Perez traded contracts tied to specific words and phrases that Trump would mention during events, including the State of the Union, a Davos speech, and a Medal of Honor ceremony.

The activity was reportedly flagged by Kalshi, which referred the case to regulators. Perez is now in settlement talks with the CFTC, while remaining in his position.

The case highlights a new challenge for prediction markets: access to non-public information can become an edge just as valuable as insider information in financial markets.

💳 PayPal shareholders push back against Stripe takeover terms

PayPal ($PYPL) shareholders are increasingly criticizing the proposed deal with Stripe, arguing the offer significantly undervalues the company. The probability of a transaction has reportedly risen to 74%.

If completed, it would be one of the biggest payments acquisitions in years and reshape the competitive landscape of digital payments.

⚡️ Lucid crashes on bankruptcy rumors, then denies the reports

Lucid ($LCID) plunged as much as 49% after reports claimed the EV maker was considering Chapter 11 bankruptcy or a move to go private. Trading was briefly halted as the stock hit a 52-week low, leaving it down nearly 80% over the past year.

The reports cited restructuring adviser AlixPartners, which was reportedly reviewing strategic options. They followed a difficult period for Lucid, including 1,500 layoffs, multiple executive departures, negative gross margins, and an $800 million draw from a Saudi-backed loan facility.

Hours later, Lucid denied the reports, saying it has sufficient liquidity, no special board committee has been formed, and AlixPartners has not recommended Chapter 11.

🐕 Analyst compares SpaceX to Dogecoin as shares keep falling

Mark Yusko, CEO of Morgan Creek Capital, says SpaceX's $2 trillion valuation is disconnected from reality, comparing the company to Dogecoin because of its concentrated ownership and investor enthusiasm.

Yusko argues that SpaceX, along with OpenAI and Anthropic, is trading at valuations that cannot be justified by future earnings. He also expects the stock to come under more pressure as lock-up restrictions expire and early investors gain the ability to sell.

SpaceX shares have fallen more than 12% over the past week and nearly 28% over the past month after a strong IPO debut.

Despite the criticism, Wall Street remains largely positive. 22 of 28 analysts still rate the stock as a Buy, while only one currently recommends Sell.

🏘 San Francisco homes are being sold for OpenAI shares

Some home sellers in San Francisco are accepting OpenAI and Anthropic shares instead of cash, even though neither company is publicly traded.
One $2.995 million home attracted an offer from an OpenAI employee for more than $1 million above the asking price, while another seller offered a $500,000 discount if the buyer paid in Anthropic stock.

The rush is driven by expectations that future IPOs could create more than 16,000 millionaires in the Bay Area. This year, 144 homes sold for at least $1 million over asking, compared with just 8 during the first half of 2025. Homes priced above $10 million have doubled, while inventory has fallen to fewer than 600 listings.

Private company shares are increasingly being treated like cash, even before the market has determined what they're actually worth.
