🌊 Navigational freedom in the Strait of Hormuz cannot be separated from the security environment in which it is exercised.

Where maritime routes have been incorporated into military operations against a coastal state, the legal and strategic implications deserve careful examination.

The relationship between military installations, logistical supply chains, and maritime movements may be relevant to understanding the security concerns of the coastal state, Mohammad Reza Dehshiri writes.

🇨🇳 A distinctive feature of the PRC’s current foreign policy is the emergence of global initiatives reflecting Beijing’s vision regarding issues of global development, international security, and inter-civilisational interaction. Standing out among these is the Global Governance Initiative, which synthesises approaches to reforming the international relations system.

In June 2026, a White Paper titled “Building a More Just and Equitable Global Governance System: China’s Concepts, Initiatives, and Actions” was released. It confirmed that Beijing is confidently assuming the role of an “architect” of international rules, offering an alternative to the Western vision of the development of the global order, writes Vladimir Nezhdanov.

🇺🇸🇨🇳 The outbreak of the US-China trade war in January 2018 marked a turning point in the relationship between the two countries: trade and economic issues exacerbated tensions and escalated into a complex geopolitical competition. Symbolic of this change was a speech by former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, delivered at the Nixon Presidential Library and Museum. Its message: the period of normalisation between Washington and Beijing that began in the 1970s is over, and an era of competition between “communist China” and the “free world” has begun. Despite the two sides’ stated desire to “make a deal”, any agreement between them will prove incapable of addressing the full scope of accumulated problems, meaning the two sides can, at best, rely on mechanisms for “managed competition”, writes Vladimir Nezhdanov.

⚓️ Law, Security, and Geopolitical Confrontation at Sea

Freedom of navigation, long regarded as a foundational principle of the international maritime order, is increasingly becoming a subject of political pressure and legal disputes. During the presentation of a Valdai Club report titled “The Unfreedom of Navigation?”, participants discussed the detention of merchant vessels, the expansive application of national legislation and sanctions, environmental restrictions, the security of maritime lines of communication, and the role of naval forces.

As the discussion demonstrated, freedom of the seas cannot be viewed in isolation from the broader crisis affecting the international system.

🚢 Valdai Report: The Unfreedom of Navigation?

Freedom of navigation is the foundation on which the entire subsequent legal superstructure rests—the 1982 Convention and the other international agreements and treaties governing activity in the World Ocean. The erosion of this foundation will inevitably mean that no single, universal set of rules of conduct for States will remain in this domain. Whether such legal chaos serves the interests of the collective West is not a rhetorical question, writes Pavel Gudev, the author of a new Valdai report “The Unfreedom of Navigation?”

🎮 If industrial capitalism alienated the product of physical labour from workers, today the largest tech companies are alienating the “product” of their very existence in the form of behavioural data and social interactions. Profiting from this data facilitates the concentration of capital and the transformation of Big Tech corporations into monopolies of previously unimaginable scale, increasingly influencing the domestic and foreign policies of states.

Andrey Kozinets, associate professor at the Far Eastern Federal University, discusses how this is leading to the emergence of a new international hierarchy, in which the hegemonic powers of data concentrate the infrastructure for generating, storing, and processing information, while others face the threat of losing their sovereignty.
