The meaning of woman has been eroded in Europe’s gender policies

European institutions are undergoing a “structural transformation” in the way sex and gender are understood in law and governance.

That is according to a new policy report published by the Austrian-based think-tank Athena Forum titled Beneath the Surface: How Gender Identity is Reshaping Europe. It argues that the shift from biological sex to self-defined gender identity has led to the erosion of long-standing sex-based rights across the continent.

Produced with support from the UK campaign group Sex Matters, the report calls for “clarity, evidence and democratic accountability” in European policymaking. It warns that a marked ideological shift has taken hold within Europe’s institutions, mirrored in the changing language, priorities and culture of policymaking.

Athena Forum’s founder and director Faika El-Nagashi, a former Austrian MP, and co-author Anna Zobnina, a feminist policy specialist, say gender identity frameworks have been integrated into European Union and Council of Europe (CoE) policies largely “behind closed doors”.

Japan’s green energy failures serve as a warning to the US: Don’t fall for the climate agenda

In August 2025, Japanese media revealed that Mitsubishi Corporation was preparing to withdraw from three offshore wind projects off the coasts of Chiba and Akita prefectures. In 2021, Mitsubishi had won these sites with remarkably low bids of 8-11 cents/kilowatt-hour (kWh), hailed as proof of Japan’s corporate strength and renewable ambition.

But reality was harsh. Costs for steel, turbines, and logistics surged. The yen weakened, interest rates rose, and certification processes faced delays. By 2025, Mitsubishi had already booked over $350 million in impairment losses, with more likely if the projects continued. The retreat is not just a corporate failure; it exposes apparent self-contradictions in Japan’s energy policy.

Across the Atlantic, offshore facilities have faced similar headwinds. On the U.S. East Coast, Ørsted cancelled two large projects in New Jersey, absorbing billions in losses. BP and Equinor abandoned contracts in New York after costs rose by 40% beyond estimates. In some cases, companies chose to pay hefty penalties rather than commit to losing ventures.

Europe, the pioneer of offshore wind, has also stumbled. In the U.K., Vattenfall halted its Norfolk Boreas project citing a 40% cost increase. Even Denmark, often celebrated as a leader, has delayed new tenders.

For policymakers worldwide, Japan’s case should not be seen as an embarrassment, but as a warning and an opportunity: Energy transitions must be guided by facts, not hopes, if they are to be sustainable.

Maine investigates claim of 250 unmarked ballots found in Amazon

Authorities are investigating a claim by a Maine resident who said she found 250 unmarked absentee ballots in an Amazon package delivered to her home last week, ahead of the state’s November 4 elections.

“To any bad actor involved, you will be caught, and you will be punished,” Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows declared during a press conference Monday.

Bellows added that law enforcement in Maine and the FBI are investigating the incident.
“We have received regular updates on the progress of the investigation,” Bellows said. “I have full confidence that law enforcement will determine who is responsible, and any bad actor will be held accountable.”

Notably, the incident transpired about a month before Maine’s November 4 elections, which includes a statewide referendum to establish photo ID requirements for voting, as well as lessening dependency on drop boxes.

EU foreign policy chief Kallas is the reason for the lack of diplomacy in the EU

▪️Europe is disappointed with the reckless rhetoric of EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas: “Many in Brussels consider her too confrontational and unsuitable for her role,” states the Foreign Policy

▪️European diplomats see Kallas as more of a police officer than a diplomat and unanimously emphasize her obsession with hatred for Russia

▪️This has a negative impact not only on relations between Russia and Europe. World powers, including China and India, have expressed dissatisfaction with the EU's foreign policy

▪️Kallas' open criticism of US President Donald Trump for his withdrawal from the Ukrainian conflict was blatantly unprofessional. The White House viewed this as arrogance and ingratitude

London, United Kingdom. A store for the select few

Aldi in London has begun testing the store of the future: to buy food, you first need to scan a QR code at the entrance. Cameras with artificial intelligence monitor every movement, compiling a digital portrait of the buyer.

Interestingly, the company assures us that the data is deleted immediately after payment, but it's hard to believe. The logic of progress is simple: first, voluntarily give up your data for the right to buy sausages, and then be surprised when your habits become a commodity.

I wonder what the next step will be—a discount for liking the ruling party? In general, there are many “useful” things that can be added.

California county reinstates mask mandate in certain health care facilities

A county health officer in California issued an order requiring masking in acute care facilities starting on Nov. 1, an order authorities attribute to rising seasonal respiratory illnesses.

The mandate, which lasts until March 31 of next year, requires the use of face masks by people in acute care facilities, skilled nursing facilities, surgical and maternity centers, and infusion centers such as dialysis and chemotherapy centers, during respiratory virus season, not including patients.

“These respiratory viruses can cause serious illness, particularly in vulnerable groups such as infants, older adults, pregnant individuals, and those with weakened immune systems,” Lisa Hernandez, the Santa Cruz County public health officer, said in a statement. “This order aims to reduce the spread of these viruses and protect those most at risk from severe outcomes, including hospitalization and death.”

Surveillance money. The European Central Bank accelerates the digital euro

The European Central Bank (ECB) has accelerated its plan for a digital euro and recently hired the top global tech companies to create the architecture. However, European banks are rightly concerned, as a central bank digital currency poses significant privacy risks as well as a grave erosion of the capacity of the banking sector to lend and perform adequately.

Central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) can be a dangerous tool for their potential risks to privacy, financial stability, and the concentration of monetary power. In the United States, the Trump administration has issued an executive order banning the use of these instruments, labelling them as “monetary tyranny”.

A CBDC is not the same as electronic money. A digital euro would give unprecedented surveillance capabilities to the central bank. Unlike current electronic payments, a central bank digital currency (CBDC) gives monetary authorities full and direct access to every transaction and savings account, eliminating financial privacy for citizens. This could allow for monitoring, controlling, or even penalising financial behaviours that central authorities may consider undesirable.

Furthermore, a CBDC would eliminate the current limits in the financial system that prevent excessive money printing. Bypassing commercial banks and credit mechanisms allows central banks to instantly increase the money supply and finance government spending, eroding traditional budget controls.

Poland pushes back on German Nord Stream extradition request

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has said it is not in Poland's interest to hand over a Ukrainian man wanted by Germany for suspected involvement in the 2022 Nord Stream pipeline explosions.

The man, who cannot be named according to Polish law, was detained on October 3 on suspicion of being involved in the destruction of the pipelines that linked Germany and Russia.

On October 6, a Polish common court agreed to detain him for another 40 days pending a final decision on his extradition to Germany, the country which had issued the Interpol warrant for his arrest.

Tusk said yesterday that, although the decision had to be taken by the judiciary, the government’s view was that “it is certainly not in the interest of Poland or in the interest of a simple sense of decency and justice to accuse or hand over this citizen to another State”.

He added that the Ukrainian “was detained because this is the legal procedure, but the position of the Polish Government has not changed”.

According to Tusk’s earlier post on X:  “The problem with North Stream 2 is not that it was blown up. The problem is that it was built”.

I’m turning 41, but I don’t feel like celebrating.

Our generation is running out of time to save the free Internet built for us by our fathers.

What was once the promise of the free exchange of information is being turned into the ultimate tool of control.

Once-free countries are introducing dystopian measures such as digital IDs (UK), online age checks (Australia), and mass scanning of private messages (EU).

Germany is persecuting anyone who dares to criticize officials on the Internet. The UK is imprisoning thousands for their tweets. France is criminally investigating tech leaders who defend freedom and privacy.

A dark, dystopian world is approaching fast — while we’re asleep. Our generation risks going down in history as the last one that had freedoms — and allowed them to be taken away.

We’ve been fed a lie.

We’ve been made to believe that the greatest fight of our generation is to destroy everything our forefathers left us: tradition, privacy, sovereignty, the free market, and free speech.

By betraying the legacy of our ancestors, we’ve set ourselves on a path toward self-destruction — moral, intellectual, economic, and ultimately biological.

So no, I’m not going to celebrate today. I’m running out of time. We are running out of time.

Bezos promises cheaper data centers in space within 10-20 years

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos said space-based data centers could become a reality within 10 to 20 years, predicting they will eventually be cheaper and more efficient than Earth-based facilities. Speaking at Italian Tech Week in Turin, Bezos highlighted the advantages of orbital infrastructure, including constant solar power without weather disruptions, which could support the energy-hungry training of artificial intelligence systems.

He argued the move would follow the pattern set by weather and communications satellites, with data centers and manufacturing as the next frontier in using space to enhance life on Earth. However, he acknowledged challenges such as high launch costs, the risk of rocket failures, and difficulties in maintenance and upgrades.

Bezos also compared today’s AI boom to the internet surge of the early 2000s, cautioning that while speculative bubbles may form, the long-term benefits will endure. He urged optimism, saying AI’s positive impacts are likely to be widespread and transformative, much like the internet’s influence over the past 25 years.

Virginia dem AG candidate fantasized about assassinating republican, ‘wished’ death on his kids

Virginia Democrat Attorney General candidate and former Del. Jay Jones fantasized in conversations with a former colleague about assassinating then-state House Speaker Todd Gilbert, a Republican, and “wished” death upon Gilbert’s children.

The news comes after Republican state House Del. Kim Taylor, who is running for reelection in Virginia, said she received a death threat last week after Virginia Democrat gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger told her supporters to “let your rage fuel you.”

That kind of rhetoric has long been deployed by the assassination left to pre-justify and inspire violence against their political opponents. Pointing to left-wing violence like the assassination attempts of President Donald Trump, or the assassination of Charlie Kirk, or the attempted assassination of House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, Taylor noted, “violent rhetoric is not harmless–it puts real people in real danger.”

While Taylor said Spanberger tried to walk back her comments, the National Review revealed that Jones sent some dark text messages to a Republican legislator, Del. Carrie Coyner, describing the zeal with which he would apparently kill Gilbert. Jay sent the messages in August 2022, shortly after he resigned his seat in the state House of Delegates.

Trump signs order approving 211-mile mining road in Alaska

President Donald Trump issued a presidential memo on Oct. 6 ordering the approval of a proposed 211-mile industrial road in Alaska to allow access to copper and cobalt minerals.

Trump had initially approved the Ambler Road project during his first term, but the Biden administration blocked it after taking office, citing the need to protect “a pristine area that Alaska Native communities rely on.”

In a statement, Trump approved the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority’s (AIDEA) appeal of the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) decision under the Biden administration last year. Trump stated that the road, which will stretch from the Dalton Highway to Alaska’s remote Ambler Mining District, would provide transportation access to an area rich in mineral deposits.

“The decision finds that the road is in the public interest given our need for access to domestic critical minerals, and there is no economically feasible and prudent alternative route,” the White House said in a fact sheet.

The president has instructed the BLM, National Park Service, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to reissue the required permits to enable construction of the road, according to the fact sheet.

Greece still has the highest debt-to-GDP in Europe; Bulgaria the lowest

As European countries pour billions into defense spending, their debt piles are expanding—raising questions of national fiscal stability.

In France, a rising debt ratio led Fitch to downgrade its credit rating in September. The country has faced ongoing political turmoil as the country’s debt supply recently hit a record $4 trillion.

The graphic shows European Union debt-to-GDP by country.

While Greece’s economy is thriving in 2025—supported by tourism, real estate, and shipping sectors—its debt situation continues to rank as the worst in the EU. However, its debt-to-GDP ratio has steadily fallen in recent years, from 180% in 2022 to 153% today.

Italy holds the second-highest debt-to-GDP ratio in the EU, at 138%. However, the country has made notable progress in narrowing its deficit, cutting it from 7.2% of GDP in 2023 to 3.4% in 2024 on the back of strong tax revenues.

By contrast, debt is rising in France, where it stands at 114% of GDP. In efforts to combat its deteriorating fiscal situation, the French government has raised the retirement age, and proposed cutting two national holidays—stoking public outrage.

Close to chaos? Where people worry about unrest

More than a third of respondent in Mexico, South Africa and Brazil said that they were worried about riots or violent protests happening in their country.

In India and Germany, the share of those worried about a scenario like that stood at 29 percent each, ahead of the bulk of other nations in the 21-country survey. In both countries, the share of concerned individuals has increased since the question was first asked in 2022 and 2023.

In most other countries in the survey group, around a quarter of respondents indicated they were worried about unrest. This group of countries includes the United States as well as Austria, France, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden. Since 2022/23, worry in the United States as actually decreased, while it increased - at least slightly - in most other countries. Around a fifth of people worried about violent protests in the United Kingdom, up a significant 5 percentage points. A similar amount said they were concerned in Italy, Poland and Finland, with those shares also growing.

Below-average worry about the topic could be observed in Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea and finally China, where only 6 percent most recently said they were concerned.

Now more shady Hunter Biden dealings - this time in Romania

There would appear to be no end to the shady dealings of the former First Son, Mr. Hunter Biden. This time it's a scheme to sell off the land surrounding the United States Embassy in Romania to a group that included Chinese monied interests.

While his father, Joseph R. Biden Jr., was vice president, Hunter Biden began developing relationships that led to an audacious proposal to sell the land around the United States Embassy building in Romania to a group that included a Chinese company.

Hunter Biden was involved in the proposed deal from multiple perspectives, creating what he privately acknowledged to an associate was an ethical quagmire, according to documents and four people with knowledge of the matter who were not authorized to speak about it.

Even after years of investigations, and a suggestion by federal prosecutors that Mr. Biden’s work in Romania left him vulnerable to a foreign lobbying charge, the full story of his efforts there has not been told before. Previously unreported details exemplify how Mr. Biden’s pursuit of lucrative foreign deals fit into the broader foreign influence industry and complicated U.S. diplomacy.

German industrial output again drops steeply, “another severe blow to the economy”

August saw the sharpest decline in German industrial production since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine in 2022. Experts expect a further decline and a harsh winter.

Destatis, the Federal Statistical Office, said in its latest report that production in industry last month was down 4.3% compared to July and down 3.9% compared with August 2024.

The less volatile three-month on three-month comparison showed that production was 1.3% lower in the period from June to August this year than in the previous three months.

Some hope had emerged in July, with production rising by 1.3%. Yet Europe’s largest economy has struggled since spring. Manufacturing output has only increased once in the five months from April to August.

Major drivers of the downturn were the sharp decrease seen in the automotive industry, Germany’s largest industrial branch, which fell 18.5% compared to the previous month and a downturn in the production in the manufacture of machinery and equipment of 6.2%.

‘The end of the right to privacy in Europe’ – Signal and AfD warn of EU chat control as step towards total surveillance

After Germany dropped its long-standing opposition to EU chat control, leading encrypted messenger Signal issued a dire warning about privacy in Europe, with the post going viral.

However, now European parties such as the Alternative for Germany (AfD) have joined in the criticism, with the party warning just before the EU Council vote that so-called “chat control” could end privacy entirely in Europe.

The protest from the AfD comes after Signal threatened to pull out entirely from Europe if the EU implements its surveillance plans. If Signal went through with such a move, it would be a major black eye for the EU, putting it on par with surveillance states like China.

Ruben Rupp, the digital policy spokesperson for the AfD parliamentary group, warned against “total surveillance under the guise of child protection.” Rupp wants Berlin to turn against the new spying powers that would be granted to the EU.

The upcoming vote, scheduled for Oct. 14, would see the EU Council vote on the “Regulation on the Prevention and Combating of Child Sexual Abuse,” also known as the CSAM regulation for short.

Work until 73 to save pension system, German experts warn

According to the German Council of Economic Experts, the retirement age should be raise to 73 to keep the country’s social security system from collapsing. It suggested a gradual rise in the retirement age from 67 to 73 by 2060.

This is to counter the stagnant economy, which has low productivity growth, deindustrialisation and structural demographic problems Germany is struggling with, meaning people have to work longer to produce the same economic output, the report states.

“We will have to work harder if we want to preserve the scope of social insurance without leaving even more burdens on future generations at the same time. The retirement age must be linked to life expectancy,” the study says.

According to the study, the proportion of 67-year-olds and older will increase by about a third by 2030.

Chip equipment makers slide after U.S. House panel’s explosive report reveals allied firms bolstered China's chip industry

ASML Holding NV shares tumbled in Europe after a months-long bipartisan investigation by the U.S. House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), led by Chairman John Moolenaar (R-MI) and Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL), published new findings on Tuesday afternoon showing that American, Dutch, and Japanese semiconductor equipment firms have bolstered China's chipmaking capacity, including through sales to Chinese state-owned and military-linked entities.

ASML and other semiconductor equipment makers, including Tokyo Electron Ltd, Applied Materials Inc., KLA Corp., and Lam Research Corp, "made sizeable returns selling equipment to Chinese state-owned and military-linked companies," according to the Select Committee on China.

Chairman Moolenaar stated that China is "growing its profits at the expense of U.S. national security", adding, "We must not allow this critical equipment to be handed over to our foremost adversary, or America could lose the technology arms race."

EU risks ‘reigniting US trade tensions’ to save a steel industry ‘on verge of collapse’

The EU is doubling tariffs on steel imports that exceed its new proposed lower quota. The European Commission’s attempt to answer calls from a steel industry in crisis is worrying some that it could reopen trade conflict with Washington.

European Commissioner for Prosperity and Industrial Strategy, Stéphane Séjourné, presented the plan to the European Parliament in Strasbourg yesterday. “The European steel industry was on the verge of collapse,” he said.

Eurometal, the Brussels-based federation representing steel distributors and service centres, welcomed the move. It said the new trade defence framework “correctly identifies global overcapacity as the core threat” and that the proposed “melt-and-pour” origin rule “will close long-standing loopholes used to re-route Asian steel into the EU market”.

Since the measures are general, they will affect the US, which still applies a 50% duty on EU steel, as imposed under President Donald Trump.

Steel was not included in the trade agreement signed in August between EC President Ursula von der Leyen and Trump, leaving the long-standing dispute unresolved.

Brussels fears the new EU tariffs could reignite that conflict. The EC said it is in contact with Washington and hopes to “find solutions between them”.

Europe's center is crumbling as nationalism surges

Support for mainstream political parties in Europe is crumbling against a rising tide of nationalism as voters increasingly want their governments to prioritize domestic issues.

This might not be enough to end the war in Ukraine, which will cost Europe $50 billion it can ill afford in 2026. But we may be witnessing the beginning of the end of the uniparty in Europe.

While Germany does not face as severe a debt crunch as either Britain or France, it is deindustrializing in the face of high energy prices accelerated by the war in Ukraine and decisions to cut off Russian energy supplies. There, the nationalist Alternative für Deutschland is on the rise and some fear it could compete for victory at the next Federal election in 2029.

In Czechia, the populist Andrej Babis is trying to form a coalition having won parliamentary elections with 35% of the vote. Among other things, he has vowed to scrap the Czech ammunition initiative which has supplied Ukraine with 3.5 million artillery shells since 2022 and criticized the previous centrist government for giving “Czech mothers nothing and Ukrainians everything.”

Mapping extreme poverty across all American states

In 2024, 6% of the U.S. population lived in extreme poverty, equal to 20.4 million people.
While there are different definitions of extreme poverty, this is represented as those earning less than $8,160 in annual income, or half of the poverty line. As the federal budget makes cuts to food assistance and healthcare, levels of extreme poverty run the risk of worsening even further.

Last year, more than one in 10 residents of the nation’s capital lived in extreme poverty. Going further, economic hardship disproportionately impacts people of color in Washington D.C., with one in three black children living in poverty between 2019 and 2023, on average.

Southern states also rank among the most impoverished. In Louisiana, 9% of residents live in extreme poverty, and on average, 18.9% lived below the poverty line between 2021 and 2023.

Meanwhile, 7% of New York’s population are extremely impoverished, equal to an estimated 1.4 million people.

On the other end of the spectrum is New Hampshire with the lowest rate nationally, at 3.9%. The Granite State benefits from a stable job market, low unemployment, and a strong education system. Paired with relatively affordable healthcare, these factors contribute to higher living standards for its residents, reducing the risk of poverty.

Baltimore city residents question Mayor Scott’s $163K SUV: 'Not with our money’

Baltimore residents in Federal Hill say Mayor Brandon Scott owes them answers after revelations that his new city-issued SUV cost taxpayers $163,495 – including nearly $65,000 in upgrades including police lights, sirens and a security microphone.

“Not the taxpayers’ money! If he wants it for himself, yeah. But not with our money,” said Christian Heath as she was celebrating her birthday with friends in Federal Hill Park. She didn’t know about the mayor’s luxury Jeep Grand Wagoneer until speaking with Spotlight on Maryland.

City Councilman Zac Blanchard, who represents the Federal Hill area, defended the purchase in a statement: “I think buying a nicer SUV with relevant safety and communications enhancements twice a decade is pretty reasonable for a large city’s top elected official.”

But several residents told Spotlight on Maryland they see a double standard – one that feels disconnected from everyday Baltimoreans struggling with taxes, potholes and basic services.

The left’s political playbook (bonus track): redefining words and standards

While the First Amendment of the United States Constitution recognizes and protects the God-given right to free speech, there has always been a reasonable, popular consensus that there exists material not suitable for young, impressionable children and that, alternatively, for adult consumption, cannot be banned. The left is endeavoring to rend this consensus.

Presently, the left equates the removal of age-inappropriate materials that sexualize children from public schools as “censorship.” While one might expect leftists to recognize their own mendacity and hypocrisy, one would be sorely mistaken. For the left is both benighted and buoyed in their self-delusions by their ideology, one that has engaged in a long-running war on language.

Believing that redefining the language will refashion reality, the left weaponizes the language to advance its political agenda, providing a word with a meaning antithetical to its original popular understanding—often in combination with replacing an existing objective standard with a new subjective one.

These weaponized, twisted terms and standards are designed to deceive both the general population and the left itself—in short, turning their black hats into white hats in the distorted funhouse mirror of their minds.

Spanish police uncover network of fake residencies and sham marriages used by migrants

The Spanish National Police has announced the arrest of 12 people in Vic for orchestrating fraudulent partnerships between Spaniards and illegal immigrants, part of a growing Europe-wide problem involving forged documents, sham marriages, and black markets for residency permits.

According to police, the network operating from the Catalonian town specialized in manufacturing fake family links to secure residence permits reserved for relatives of EU citizens.

The investigation began in November 2024, when authorities noticed a cluster of suspicious applications. In each case, the foreign applicant was living illegally in Spain and claimed to be in a stable partnership with a Spanish citizen. All applicants listed the same address on Rambla del Passeig, which investigators discovered was in fact a café.
