🏦 Gemini agrees to return $1.1 billion to Earn customers as part of NYDFS settlement

The New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS) reached a settlement agreement with Winklevoss-owned crypto exchange Gemini. The NYDFS announced the settlement in a press release published on Feb. 28. The regulator said that Gemini failed to protect its customers adequately and had multiple compliance issues. As part of the settlement, Gemini has also agreed to contribute $40 million towards the Genesis bankruptcy proceedings, which will benefit Earn Program customers directly.

🇺🇸 Do Kwon unlikely to be extradited before start of SEC trial

Do Kwon’s lawyers told a US court on Feb. 26 that the Terraform Labs co-founder will be unable to attend the initial hearings of the SEC trial. The lawyers did not request an adjournment and said the trial could begin as scheduled on March 25 without Kwon’s presence, according to court filings. Kwon’s lawyer, David Patton, said that Kwon, currently in Montenegro, may not be extradited by the end of March due to unforeseen complications in the legal process. He added that these have derailed earlier expectations of a quick extradition.

Ethereum liquid staking protocol Lido reached $30.56 billion in total value locked in Feb. 26, according to The Block's Data Dashboard. Lido has seen increased adoption and steadily rising TVL since around July 2022. Lido's last major peak in TVL was $20.83 billion on April 5, 2022, a month before the collapse of the Terra USD stablecoin ecosystem. Lido's high TVL makes it the biggest validator on the proof-of-stake blockchain Ethereum, controlling 32% of staked ether.

Starknet’s native token STRK is set to begin trading on centralized exchanges later today following the opening of distribution claims for nearly 1.3 million wallets. Trading will begin on centralized exchanges, including Binance, Bybit, Bitfinex and OKX, once liquidity requirements have been met. Data unveiled during Asia hours from Coinbase revealed a sizable withdrawal of over 18,000 Bitcoin, as confirmed by Arkham Intelligence, Glassnode, and Coinglass. This substantial outflow of nearly $1 billion has significantly influenced Coinbase’s exchange balance. The funds have been sent to several different addresses with the Bitcoin split across new wallets. Balances in the new wallets range from $45 million to $171 million, with all UTXOs from the original transaction having been spent.

Ether’s (ETH) latest price rally and surge past the $3,000 level has been followed by whales on an accumulation spree. According to Lookonchain, whale 0x8B94 withdrew 14,632 ETH worth $45.5 million from the world’s largest crypto exchange, Binance, in the past six days. Whale 0x8B94 first transferred 10,820 ETH accumulated by February 23 out for staking before moving the last 3,850 ETH withdrawn between February 24 and 25, eight hours before writing time. Data from Etherscan showed the whale had a balance of 4.7 ETH worth approximately $14,500 at press time.

🟠 US prosecutors ask judge to approve Binance plea deal

US prosecutors filed a sentencing memo on Feb. 16 asking a federal judge to sign off on the Binance plea deal, Bloomberg News reported. The plea deal entails Binance paying one of the largest criminal penalties in US history, amounting to $4.3 billion. The plea deal also requires that Binance be monitored for five years to ensure compliance with regulations.

Crypto Intelligence firm Arkham Intelligence has reportedly identified on-chain addresses containing 98% of MicroStrategy’s Bitcoin holdings. According to a Feb. 16 post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), MicroStrategy, which recently repositioned itself into a BTC development company, holds 107,000 BTC of the top digital asset with Fidelity, while 79,000 BTC is held in segregated custody, including Coinbase Prime.
