Star Trek: Section 31 will premiere as a direct-to-streaming movie on January 24th on Paramount Plus, which revealed the date (https://www.paramountpressexpress.com/paramount-plus/shows/star-trek-section-31/releases/?view=110465-paramount-announces-original-movie-star-trek-section-31-to-premiere-friday-january-24) during a Trek panel at the New York Comic Con. Fans will finally see Michelle Yeoh’s Star Trek: Discovery character, Emperor Philippa Georgiou, put her Mirrorverse skills to use as a super secret space spy.
When we last saw Emperor Georgiou (an alternate dimension version of Captain Georgiou Discovery’s first season) she was flung back in time by a being called the Guardian of Forever. Before that, though, she had been recruited as a member of Section 31, the clandestine organization that the Trek franchise often uses to illustrate that even the glossy Federation has a shady side.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk gave a $1 million check (https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cg78ljxn8g7o) to an audience member at a rally in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where he’s been Trump-stumping (https://www.theverge.com/2024/10/16/24271770/elon-musk-trump-pennsylvania-talks), on Saturday. And he said he will continue to give that prize to one random voter per day until the Presidential election on November 5th. The move could very well break US election law.
Only people who have signed a petition (https://petition.theamericapac.org/) from Musk’s America PAC are eligible for the sweepstakes-style offer. And only registered voters are eligible to sign the petition. According to its terms, Musk will give $1 million to someone in Pittsburgh today, but will later expand to anyone living in swing states like Georgia, Nevada, or Arizona.
It’s against federal law to impel anyone to vote or get registered to...

It’s time to dust off your VCR and clean the heads, because Alien: Romulus is coming to VHS as a limited edition on December 3rd alongside the other physical releases, director Fede Alvarez announced during “a special Beyond Fest (https://beyondfest.com/)-partnered screening” in Los Angeles yesterday.
The “fully functioning VHS tape” is meant to celebrate 45 years since the Alien franchise first (chest) burst into theaters, 20th Century Studios wrote in a release emailed to The Verge. It’ll present the movie, appropriately, in a 4:3 aspect ratio (hopefully without pan-and-scan). It also comes in a slick, vintage-style sleeve.

For the last eight months, David Cogen has been living a double life. By day: a YouTuber and creator, the face of TheUnlockr (TheUnlockr/videos" rel="nofollow">https://www.youtube.com/@TheUnlockr/videos), reviewing phones and testing ebikes and explaining how food smokers really work. By night and morning and every single other available moment in between: a coffee shop entrepreneur, working to get a Brooklyn spot called Coffee Check up and running. The whole thing started late last year and escalated quickly. He needed a new workspace after his previous lease ended, had a business idea for it that didn’t quite pan out, decided to repurpose his new space into a coffee roastery, and then realized there was a front door to the street. Why not open a cafe, too?
Coffee Check (https://coffeecheck.nyc/) has been open since late August, and on the...

For many a year, Windows users have been dragging their program windows over to the borders of the screen to snap them into position (https://www.theverge.com/22710511/windows-11-snap-layouts-how-to), splitting the screen up evenly into halves or quarters. Now, with the rollout of macOS Sequoia, Mac users can do the same. You can get a Spotify playlist up alongside your email inbox, for example, or a report you’re writing up alongside the online articles you’re reporting on. It means less switching between windows and more information on the screen.
Once you’ve got macOS Sequoia installed on your Mac, you can take advantage of what Apple calls window tiling. There are several methods you can use.
Use the green button
Move the cursor up to the green zoom button to the left of any open window.

Early this morning, I received an email from “The Internet Archive Team,” replying to a message I’d sent on October 9th. Except its author doesn’t seem to have been the digital archivists’ support team — it was apparently written by the hackers who breached the site (https://www.theverge.com/2024/10/9/24266419/internet-archive-ddos-attack-pop-up-message) earlier this month and who evidently maintain some level of access to its systems.
I’m not alone. Users on the Internet Archive subreddit are reporting (https://www.reddit.com/r/internetarchive/comments/1g7sb6b/well_thats_concerning_got_this_reply_on_an_email/) getting the replies, as well. Here is the message I received:

When people search for “Adam driver Megalopolis” on Instagram or Facebook right now, instead of seeing posts about Francis Ford Coppola’s latest film (https://www.theverge.com/24243766/megalopolis-review), they’re shown a warning, titled, “Child sexual abuse is illegal.”
That bizarre fact was pointed out (https://x.com/GraceGFreud/status/1847446202230477125) in a post on X yesterday, and as of today, I’m still seeing it when I search for the phrase. But why? Well, it doesn’t seem to have anything to do with recent Threads moderation failures (https://www.theverge.com/2024/10/11/24267898/mosseri-acknowledges-mistakes-threads-instagram-broken-moderation). Nor are there bombshell revelations about Megalopolis or its main star that I’m aware of.

Ford says some of its NACS adapters could cause issues. | Image: Ford
Ford started offering free adapters for Tesla’s Supercharger network to owners of its EVs in February (https://www.theverge.com/2024/2/29/24085844/ford-ev-adapter-tesla-supercharger-nacs), and now it’s telling some of its customers to stop using them, reports InsideEVs. The company found a “potential issue” that could cause “reduced charging speeds over time” or even damage to the charge port itself, according to a service bulletin (https://view.msg.ford.com/?qs=c386a7d127fc73d2a2ec46eb66a99b127fa90b980fbf8b6053fe8596e59470a09388b555260b6e15d99f8abf1d505b8751fed62c3af2f011dc7c663dbd88e28de590275579cdd301) it’s sending to those affected.
Ford EV owners should follow the link on Ford’s notice to make sure it has the right address on file. If it is, they won’t need to do anything else to get their replacement, but if not, the company says customers need to update their address by October 24th.
Ford will supply a replacement adapter in the coming weeks and provide return instructions to send back...

What if I told you the Meta Quest 3S is in some ways just a more powerful Quest 2 (https://www.theverge.com/21437674/oculus-quest-2-review-features-photos) with color passthrough? “Yes, of course it is,” someone who’s read our coverage (https://www.theverge.com/24252316/meta-quest-3s-hands-on-connect-2024) might say, but iFixit shows just how true that is in the teardown video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvEXxIptBaY) it published today.
The first hint of that is the headset’s Fresnel lenses, which iFixit’s Shahram Mokhtari writes in a blog post (https://go.redirectingat.com/?id=66960X1514734&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ifixit.com%2FNews%2F101990%2Fmetas-quest-3s-is-just-a-revamped-quest-2-and-its-the-better-for-it&referrer=theverge.com&sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theverge.com%2F2024%2F10%2F19%2F24274330%2Fmeta-quest-3s-teardown-quest-2-lenses-lcd-panel) are “100% compatible” with those used by the Quest 2. The headset has the older headset’s IPD adjustment mechanism, as well; and it shares the same single LCD panel, rather than using one panel per eye (https://youtu.be/liVll-GVF3Q?t=293), like the Meta Quest 3 (https://www.theverge.com/23906313/meta-quest-3-review-vr-mixed-reality-headset).

I’ve never been so happy to use a computer that meets my state’s legal drinking age. | Photo: Wes Davis / The Verge
It’s been 20 years since Apple discontinued (https://everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac_1.25_17_fp.html) the iMac G4, a unique computer with a funky half-globe base and a flatscreen LCD on a fancy hinge and adjustable arm. In its unaltered state, it’s a nice-to-look-at, nostalgic relic that’s unusable in modern contexts. I coveted it and never got to own one at the time, but thanks to Juicy Crumb’s DockLite G4 (https://juicycrumb.com/product/docklite-g4/?v=0b3b97fa6688#imac-model), I’m using this classic iMac every day as an external monitor.
The DockLite G4 is a drop-in replacement motherboard for the iMac G4’s board that features an HDMI port, along with three USB-A and a single USB-C port, and 3.5mm ports for audio. Most importantly, it uses the iMac’s existing mounting holes and internal connectors for power and video, so all you need is a couple of screwdrivers...

The DJI Mavic Pro 3 drone. | Image: DJI
DJI, the world’s largest drone company, is suing to avoid being seen as a tool of the Chinese government. On Friday, it sued the US Department of Defense to delete its name from a list of “Chinese Military Companies,” claiming it has no such relationship to Chinese authorities and has suffered unfairly as a result of that designation.
Since DJI was added to that list in 2022, the company claims, it has “lost business deals, been stigmatized as a national security threat, and been banned from contracting with multiple federal government agencies,” and that its employees “now suffer frequent and pervasive stigmatization” and are “repeatedly harassed and insulted in public places.”
It also alleges that the DoD would not offer the company...

The Stoke Voltaic Nomad Cooking System (left) and Joulle Kettle Pot. | Photo by Thomas Ricker / The Verge
Sometimes you just need a portable electric cookset. Maybe it’s during a major power outage when everyone’s huddled together over the warm glow of the family power station. Or maybe it’s at a tailgate party or picnic. In my case, it’s anywhere I decided to park my van over the last few months while testing two cooking systems from Stoke Voltaics.
Most portable cooksets are powered by a liquid fuel like propane. It’s inexpensive and readily available in canisters of all sizes. But sometimes you’d rather not deal with an open flame, pollutants, and the noise and smell that comes with it. Stoke Voltaics’ gear is powered by electricity, which can be easily supplied by a solar generator and replenished by the sun.
I tested the company’s new $... (https://www.stokevoltaics.store/products/nomad-cooking-system)
