It’s now the second day of Amazon’s October Prime Day event (https://www.theverge.com/24255302/amazon-prime-day-deals-tips-news-guide-2024-october), and since the company is still pushing a lot of interesting deals, we looked through some of our recent “favorites” articles to find discounts on a lot of the devices we like.
What are the “favorites” articles? Well, every month or so, we like to ask our staff about their favorite stuff (https://www.theverge.com/22344288/favorite-gadgets-tech-lgear-aptops-headphones-kitchen-recommendations) — whether it’s board games, smart tech, or kitchen gadgets. And the results are usually quirky, personal, and a lot of fun.
So, we thought we’d list a few in case you have read about them in the past and thought, well, that sort of sounds good, but it’s a bit pricey. (Or — that’s pretty cheap, but maybe I’ll wait until the price goes down even more...)
What follows are some of our staff’s...

On Threads, the topic of “Threads Moderation Failures” is trending (https://www.threads.net/search?q=Threads%20Moderation%20Failures). Some users complain their accounts are being deleted or restricted for linking to articles with controversial topics. Instagram and Threads boss Adam Mosseri is directly replying (mosseri/post/DA4aJFvvxTc" rel="nofollow">https://www.threads.net/@mosseri/post/DA4aJFvvxTc) to some complaints and said (mosseri/post/DA55gP6xqMb?xmt=AQGztKVi-d95TvnowJ6kiTgIeYsxiCz_Rf5vansejAiL4Q" rel="nofollow">https://www.threads.net/@mosseri/post/DA55gP6xqMb?xmt=AQGztKVi-d95TvnowJ6kiTgIeYsxiCz_Rf5vansejAiL4Q) he’s “looking into it.” And I’m one (https://x.com/Ricky_Babcock/status/1843684704182231322) of (https://x.com/IamGabeG/status/1843381623288742394) many (https://x.com/Tiernan_Avery21/status/1843695744567652402) people (https://x.com/8BitShowAndTell/status/1842743495108538454) who’s had their account deleted for allegedly being a child — which I am not.
Moderation is a perennial problem on social media, but based on social media posts and The Verge staff’s own experiences, Meta is currently banning and restricting users on a hair trigger. One of my colleagues was locked out of her account briefly (kylie.robison/post/DA3i2qIPY8v" rel="nofollow">https://www.threads.net/@kylie.robison/post/DA3i2qIPY8v) this week after joking (kylie.robison/post/DAzGBjjzFNG" rel="nofollow">https://www.threads.net/@kylie.robison/post/DAzGBjjzFNG) that she “wanted to die” because of a heatwave.

Robot vacuums are some of the most useful smart home gadgets you can buy. Small, circular home helpers that clean areas you can’t reach and work hard so you don’t have to, these little suckers are life-changing.
As The Verge’s resident robot vacuum expert, I’ve tested dozens of different models over the last five years and have always highly recommended only buying robot vacuums when they’re on sale. This is because: (a) they’re expensive, and (b) they're almost always on sale — if not today, then likely tomorrow. And today, the last day of the October Prime Day event, is a very good day to pick one up. There are some excellent deals to be had — over 50 percent off in some cases.
Here are my picks based on price and prowess:

The Wimbledon Championships, the most prestigious of professional tennis events, declared it would no longer use human line judges at next year’s tournament. In 2025, the London event will use an electronic line-calling system (ELC) instead.
First reported in The Times of London, the announcement marks a radical change to a 147-year-old tradition, albeit one that’s on trend with the sport’s broad shift toward technology-assisted officiating. In 2023, the Association of Tennis Professionals announced (https://www.atptour.com/en/news/electronic-line-calling-release-april-2023) all of its events would move toward automating line calls, and two of the four Slams have already incorporated it. With Wimbledon going with ELC, the last holdout is the French Open.
In the past, a court was monitored by as many as nine line...

Nintendo just announced its new Alarmo clock (https://www.theverge.com/2024/10/9/24265984/nintendo-alarmo-alarm-clock-date-price) with a motion sensor, and even though we’re still soaking in the $100 device, the company also shared a look at some interesting early prototypes that reveal how the project changed during its development.
While the Alarmo is round and an eye-catching red, one “early” prototype Nintendo showed in an “Ask the Developer” interview had a more boxy shape and came in gray. This prototype did have an interesting feature in its dot matrix LED display (similar to the now-discontinued Echo Dot with Clock (https://www.theverge.com/2024/7/24/24205675/amazon-discontinue-echo-dot-with-clock)), but Nintendo ultimately went in a different direction because “we felt that this display system wouldn’t be able to communicate the instructions sufficiently,” says Nintendo’s Yosuke Tamori, who...

If you’re looking to maximize your budget and score a bigger haul for your money during October’s Amazon Prime Day sale (https://www.theverge.com/24255302/amazon-prime-day-deals-tips-news-guide-2024-october), you’ll be happy to know that there are many great deals you can find on tech and other gear for well under $100. Some of the inexpensive gadgets we like under that threshold are discounted even further, while others normally in the triple digits have snuck into double-digit territory, some for the first time.
Right now, for example, you can find great prices on Amazon’s newest Fire TV Cube (https://www.amazon.com/All-new-fire-tv-cube-4k-streaming-device/dp/B09BZZ3MM7/?tag=theverge02-20), Philips Hue RGB smart bulbs (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08D9N7RJ4?tag=theverge02-20), and Anker’s MagGo 3-in-1 charging stand (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CFXQMZJT?tag=theverge02-20). These Prime Day deals are only guaranteed to stick around for one more day, though, as the sale is only scheduled to run through the end of today, October 9th....

Brazil’s National Telecommunications Agency sent orders to service providers to unblock X (https://www.gov.br/anatel/pt-br/assuntos/noticias/anatel-notifica-prestadoras-para-que-permitam-acesso-a-plataforma-x), ending a five-week ban of the social media company.
The agency known as Anatel, which is like the country’s FCC, issued the directive today and indicated that each internet service provider is responsible for taking the measures to implement the order. Anatel said:
The time for the execution of the unblocking will depend on the measures used by the providers, according to their specificities. The temporary suspension of access to X had been determined by the Supreme Court itself in the face of the platform’s refusal to comply with judicial decisions.
The order comes as a result of Brazil’s supreme court saying that X may resume activities for its...

A future-looking SoC. | Image: MediaTek
MediaTek has formally announced its new flagship mobile chipset, the Dimensity 9400. It has the year-over-year spec bumps we’d expect to see, along with a few future-looking features just to cover all the bases.
The 9400 is built on a 3nm process and is “up to 40 percent more power-efficient” than its predecessor, the 9300. It comprises one Arm Cortex-X925 core running at 3.62GHz, along with three Arm Cortex-X4 and four Cortex-A720 cores, both of which were announced at last year’s Computex (https://www.theverge.com/2023/5/29/23739290/computex-2023-laptop-pc-announcement-news#:~:text=use.%20What%E2%80%99s%20new%3F-,Cortex-X4,-(big%20CPU)%3A%2015). MediaTek says that this combination results in 35 percent faster single-core performance and 28 percent faster multi-core performance compared to the 9300. The chipset also includes Arm’s new 12-core Immortalis-G925 GPU (https://www.theverge.com/2024/5/29/24166216/arm-immortalis-g925-cortex-x925-mobile-soc) with 40 percent faster ray...

Is this the M4 MacBook Pro? | Screenshot: YouTube
At least two Russian creators have posted videos in which they unbox what appears to be the next base model 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M4 chip. Apple, which hasn’t announced the laptops yet, is rumored to have a launch planned (https://www.theverge.com/2024/10/6/24263414/apple-m4-macs-november-rumor-small-mac-mini-macbook-pro-imac-ipad-mini) for November.

Chevy is lowering the Silverado EV’s starting price for 2025 (https://pressroom.chevrolet.com/gmbx/us/en/chevrolet/pressroom/news.detail.html/Pages/news/us/en/2024/oct/1007-silveradoev.html) by adding a new standard range Work Truck (WT) version that starts at $57,095, which includes destination charges but not other fees, and Chevy says the dealer “sets final price.”
Chevy also added several additional versions of the electric truck with varying ranges compared to the outgoing 2024 model with only one version, the RST trim, priced at nearly $100,000. While a top-of-the-line “max range” version is still there, for 2025, Chevy will make a cheaper RST starting at $89,395 that has a shorter 390-mile EPA range.

Google’s Android app store is an illegal monopoly (https://www.theverge.com/23994174/epic-google-trial-jury-verdict-monopoly-google-play) — and now it will have to change.
Today, Judge James Donato issued his final ruling in Epic v. Google, ordering Google to effectively open up the Google Play app store to competition for three whole years. Google will have to distribute rival third-party app stores within Google Play, and it must give rival third-party app stores access to the full catalog of Google Play apps, unless developers opt out individually.
These were Epic’s biggest asks (https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/12/24128531/epic-google-proposed-injunction-remedies), and they might change the Android app marketplace forever — if they aren’t immediately paused or blocked on appeal.
And they’re not all that Epic has won today.
Starting November 1st, 2024, and ending November 1st, 2027, Google must also:

Star Wars Outlaws sold fewer copies than expected. | Image: Ubisoft
Ubisoft is addressing rumors that Tencent is exploring a buyout of the French game publisher — though it isn’t saying much right now. In a statement on Monday (https://staticctf.ubisoft.com/8aefmxkxpxwl/zAyDQducoGatn4IydphOy/dcdb9b3c9f3ce53112b358890acd1196/PR_Company_statement_07102024.pdf), Ubisoft said it “regularly reviews all its strategic options in the interest of its stakeholders and will inform the market if and when appropriate.”
The statement follows an earlier report from Bloomberg, which says the Chinese gaming giant Tencent and the Guillemot family, who founded Ubisoft, are looking into ways to “stabilize Ubisoft and bolster its value.” Ubisoft shares plunged 19 percent last month (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-09-25/ubisoft-delays-next-assassin-s-creed-shadows-video-game-cuts-bookings-outlook) following news that it’s delaying the launch of Assasins’s Creed Shadows and reported lower-than-expected Star Wars Outlaws sales.
One of the options Ubisoft is considering is...

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the release of Alien: Isolation, the developers at Creative Assembly have announced they’re working on a sequel (https://x.com/AlienIsolation/status/1843305291322200488).

Alien: Isolation released in 2014 to rave reviews (https://www.theverge.com/2014/10/3/6897307/alien-isolation-review), marking it as one of the best video game adaptations from the Alien franchise. It stars Amanda Ripley, daughter of Ellen “get away from her, you bitch” Ripley as she attempts to discover what happened to her mother 15 years after the events of the first Alien movie. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang will deliver a keynote at CES 2025 in January. The keynote will take place (https://www.ces.tech/press-releases/nvidia-ceo-jensen-huang-to-deliver-ces-2025-keynote/) on January 6th at 6:30PM PT / 9:30PM ET, just a day before the Consumer Electronics Show opens its doors in Las Vegas. It comes amid rumors of next-gen Nvidia GPUs appearing early next year.
A source familiar with Nvidia’s plans told The Verge last month that we might hear more about the RTX 50-series at the Consumer Electronics Show in early 2025. Nvidia is an official guest keynote of the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) for this upcoming CES show after the company previously delivered its own “special address” stream at CES 2024 earlier this year.

The iPhone 16 Pro’s camera upgrades may be the true highlights of this year’s phone. So, for the past three weeks, The Verge supervising producer Vjeran Pavic has been testing out everything the camera has to offer.
Apple’s new Camera Control button may be the headline feature, but the iPhone 16 is also equipped with a suite of new photo adjustment tools that let you dial in individual aspects of how an image looks. Apple also beefed up the phone’s recording capabilities, which can capture 120fps 4K in slow motion while shooting in ProRes in Apple Log.
With all of these options, Vjeran aimed to see just how seamless the iPhone 16 Pro could fit into his personal and professional lifestyles, from going to neighborhood skating events and...
