Despite how you may feel about the price of groceries, gas, and other essential goods right now, you can actually get quite a bit for under $25. That’s even truer during a major shopping event like Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days (https://www.theverge.com/24255302/amazon-prime-day-deals-tips-news-guide-2024-october), which only has a few hours remaining.
There are only a few hours left to shop, but we’re continuing to dig through the online bargain bin to find an assortment of inexpensive, Verge-approved tech that comes in under $25. Right now, for instance, you can get your smart home started with a fifth-gen Echo Dot (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B09B8V1LZ3?tag=theverge02-20) or an Amazon Smart Plug (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B089DR29T6?tag=theverge02-20). Need something to watch? The standard Fire TV Stick 4K (https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Fire-TV-Stick-4K-streaming-device/dp/B0CJM1GNFQ?tag=theverge02-20) is a great conduit for streaming endless entertainment. Or you can pick up Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown for its lowest price...

We’re on day two of Amazon’s second Prime Day event of the year, the Prime Big Deal Days (https://www.theverge.com/2024/9/17/24244180/amazon-october-prime-day-big-deal-days-fall-dates-2024) running through October 9th. While the naming convention might be terrible, the sale isn’t. In fact, many of our favorite gadgets and goods are receiving notable discounts right now, which we’ve highlighted in our larger roundup of the best Prime Day deals (https://www.theverge.com/good-deals/24262468/amazon-prime-day-best-deals-sales-tech-gadgets-october-2024). However, if you’re looking to stick to a budget, here’s where you’ll find our top picks under $50.
Below, we’ve compiled a selection of sub-$50 items we can personally vouch for. Naturally, they include many of Amazon’s own devices, including the Fire TV Stick 4K Max (https://www.amazon.com/all-new-amazon-fire-tv-stick-4k-max/dp/B0BP9SNVH9?tag=theverge02-20), the latest Echo Spot (https://www.amazon.com/Echo-Spot-TP-Link-Smart-Color/dp/B0DF15V76B?tag=theverge02-20), and Amazon’s inexpensive smart plug (https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-smart-plug-works-with-Alexa/dp/B089DR29T6?tag=theverge02-20). Amazon isn’t known for offering the best deals for laptops, but its ongoing Prime Big Deal Days sales event (https://www.theverge.com/good-deals/24262468/amazon-prime-day-best-deals-sales-tech-gadgets-october-2024) has a few solid discounts — and there are a bunch more if you factor in Best Buy’s “48-hour Flash Sale” (https://howl.me/cngroop5STO) counter-programming. If you’re in the market for a new MacBook, Windows productivity machine (including new Copilot Plus PCs), or even a gaming laptop, we’ve got you covered with a handful of worthwhile options.
While a specialized electronics retailer like Best Buy may be better known for everyday laptop discounts, Amazon has its fair share. This is especially the case if you’re shopping for MacBooks, some of which Amazon currently has for their lowest prices to date (https://www.theverge.com/2024/10/8/24265354/apple-macbook-air-13-15-m3-processor-october-prime-day-deal-sale). The Fitbit Ace LTE is a great smartwatch for kids who aren’t quite ready for their first smartphone. It really has been something to watch Elon Musk turn SpaceX into the MyPillow of rocket companies, hasn’t it?
Christ, I guess I have to list off all the depressing stuff from the past few months: the Trump rally (https://defector.com/check-out-these-cool-moves), the creepy assassination (https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/10/08/musk-trump-assassinate-biden-harris/) comments, the even creepier comments about impregnating Taylor Swift (https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1833728804579111268), spreading hurricane misinformation (https://www.politico.com/news/2024/10/08/elon-musk-hurricane-disinformation-trump-00182769) on X (https://slate.com/technology/2024/10/charlie-kirk-elon-musk-hurricane-helene-fema-misinformation-x-twitter.html) (and thus hindering relief efforts), claiming his own child (https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/elon-musk-transgender-daughter-vivian-wilson-interview-rcna163665) was “killed” by the “woke mind virus (https://go.redirectingat.com/?id=66960X1514734&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.usatoday.com%2Fstory%2Ftech%2F2024%2F07%2F22%2Felon-musk-jordan-peterson-interview%2F74506785007%2F&referrer=theverge.com&sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theverge.com%2F2024%2F10%2F11%2F24267262%2Felon-musk-donald-trump-politics-republican),” that kind of thing. The 02 is Lynk & Co’s first all-electric car. | Image: Lynk & Co
Lynk & Co just launched the 02 (https://www.lynkco.com/en/02), the company’s first fully-electric vehicle that’s designed from the ground up to be shared with family, friends, or anyone willing to pay for the privilege. The EV is interesting, but not nearly as interesting as Lynk & Co’s unique approach to car ownership.
Once you buy, lease, or subscribe to a 02 you can become a “lender,” in Lynk & Co parlance, to set the price and conditions for sharing. In Amsterdam, a quick browse through the Lynk & Co app shows several of its 01 plug-in hybrids (https://www.theverge.com/22557411/lynk-co-01-cheaper-as-you-share-volvo-geely-price-date) available to borrow for €7 to €12 per hour (or €47 to €123 per day), usually with a “no pets, no smoking” requirement. Borrowers are automatically billed for fuel consumed when the car is returned.

A bunch of Tesla’s humanoid Optimus robots walked out alongside the reveal of Tesla’s new Robovan vehicle at tonight's Cybercab event. The robot is also seen in a video doing daily human tasks like bringing in a package off the porch and watering your plants.
“The Optimus will walk amongst you,” Tesla CEO Elon Musk qips. “You’ll be able to walk right up to them, and they will serve drinks.”
Musk explains it can basically “do anything” and mentions examples like walking your dog, babysitting your kids, mowing your lawn, serving you drinks, etc. He said it will cost $20,000 to $30,000 “long term.”
“I think this will be the biggest product ever of any kind,” Musk says.
After the presentation, livestream footage showed people interacting...

Federal Communications Commission chair Jessica Rosenworcel rejected former President Donald Trump’s call to revoke CBS’s broadcast license on Thursday, calling it a familiar threat that “should not be ignored.”
Trump called for the license to be revoked after the network shared two different edits of a recent 60 Minutes interview with Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump criticized the interview as “a giant Fake News Scam” in a Truth Social post on Thursday and claimed the network replaced her answer on a question about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “in order to save her or, at least, make her look better.”
Trump shared a compilation of two versions of Harris’ answer (https://variety.com/2024/tv/news/kamala-harris-responds-60-minutes-edit-controversy-cbs-1236173842/) to the question, with one labeled “actual answer” and the...

FEMA employees scrambling to respond to the devastation caused by hurricanes Milton and Helene are facing a new, unexpected challenge: violent threats on social media.
TikTok posts either calling for violence or applauding unverified claims about physical attacks against FEMA personnel have garnered millions of views, according to a report (https://www.mediamatters.org/tiktok/tiktok-misinformation-about-hurricane-helene-has-spurred-calls-violence-against-fema) yesterday from nonprofit Media Matters for America. X has also been fertile ground for threats of violence against FEMA, says another analysis (https://www.isdglobal.org/digital_dispatches/hurricane-helene-brews-up-storm-of-online-falsehoods-and-threats/#) published yesterday by the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD).
“This content is reaching millions of people and, in some instances, poses a credible risk to public safety,” ISD says.
Social media misinformation has fed distrust in FEMA, which officials warn...

This is Apple’s first scripted short film for the Vision Pro. | Image: Apple
I don’t like submarines. The idea of being trapped, several hundred feet underwater, in a narrow, creaking death trap? No thanks. I already knew that going into a screening of Submerged, the first scripted short film shot in Apple Immersive Video for the Vision Pro (https://www.theverge.com/24054862/apple-vision-pro-review-vr-ar-headset-features-price). Now that I’ve seen it, I’m triply sure.
Written and directed by Oscar winner Edward Berger, Submerged takes place inside a WWII submarine that’s under attack. It follows the crew as they try to escape a sinking submarine. I, however, was seated comfortably in 2024 on a couch at Apple’s demo space in Manhattan. There weren’t any other theatergoers because I was going to strap the theater to my face. It was a little weird. At least, until the film got going. Then, I, too, was...
