iPhone Users can finally place apps anywhere on their homescreen after 18 years
Apple announced iOS 18 today with two notable changes for the Home Screen: the ability to place app icons anywhere, and a dark tint option for app icons.
iPhone users can now place app icons anywhere on the Home Screen as Apple now allows blank spaces, rows, and columns between app icons, which can reveal more of the wallpaper.
App icons can now have a dark or tinted appearance, with many color options available. Icons can be manually set to appear in dark or light mode, or they can automatically switch based on whether Dark Mode is turned on or off on the iPhone.

Anyways, 3rd party app theming is supported on iOS 18 unlike in Android. However, it seems like it is mostly just a filter on top to theme them

Xiaomi Abuses Non-Dismissable Notifications to Provide Ads
Source
Non-dismissible notifications is an Android feature that's useful for user awareness, such as while using Navigation/Maps, listening to music or in ongoing calls.
Xiaomi however, is using this feature to display its Game Centre ADs / Recommendations, which will NOT disappear even after clearing all notifications until you manually swipe to remove them in HyperOS
For those wondering why the 'Clear All' button fails to remove these notifications, it's because Google recently introduced a change with Android 14 that's meant for preventing the 'accidental dismissal' of certain important notifications when the user taps the Clear All button.
Some shitty apps also abuse the feature such as Flipkart in providing useless recommendations. However, when an Android OEM itself abuses this feature, it clearly indicates that the brand does NOT prioritize user experience or care about its users.

Apple finally confirms how long it will support iPhones
Apple has confirmed it will provide security updates for iPhones for a minimum of 5 years, following the UK’s PSTI regulation. This is Apple's first official commitment to a support period, starting with the iPhone 15 series. However, this five-year period is less than the seven years guaranteed by Samsung and Google for their flagship devices.
Historically, Apple has often provided updates for longer than five years. This change means Apple no longer offers the longest guaranteed support in the industry. Users will need to hope Apple doesn't cut off support after the five-year minimum.

iPhone 16 series to have world's thinnest bezels on a smartphone
Although the iPhone 16 series won't be a major upgrade, the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will atleast get a redesigned camera module and the pro models would have larger screen size with thinner bezels
Display Sizes
iPhone 16: 6.1-inch
16 Plus: 6.7-inch
16 Pro: 6.3-inch
16 Pro Max: 6.9-inches
Bezels
iPhone 16 Pro: 1.2mm
15 Pro: 1.71mm
iPhone 16 Pro Max: 1.15mm
15 Pro max: 1.55mm
So, the screen border on the iPhone 16 Pro is 1.2 mm (down from 1.71 mm), which is a 30% reduction.
Meanwhile, the border on the larger iPhone 16 Pro Max is 1.15 mm (down from 1.55 mm), which is a 26% reduction
With the iPhone 15 Pro models, Apple reduced the screen border using low-injection pressure over-molding, or LIPO. This year, Apple is said to be using Border Reduction Structure (BRS) technology, which allows for a more compact and efficient layout of the circuitry under the display, resulting in even slimmer bezels.

Instagram Is Testing Unskippable Ad Breaks
Instagram is currently testing a new feature called “Ad Breaks.”
These unskippable ads will interrupt your browsing experience, requiring you to view an advertisement for at least 3-5 seconds before you can continue scrolling through their feed.
Meta has been facing some challenges related to its personalized ads services, like stricter privacy rules in the EU or US and the rise of TikTok. Thus, Meta is trying out different things to make more money, like in-app purchases, subscriptions, and now, these unskippable Ad Breaks.
Currently, the Ad Breaks feature appears to be limited to a small group of users, suggesting that Meta is conducting A/B testing to gauge user reaction and measure the feature’s impact on ad revenue

World's First Audio and Video Call Made Using Spatial Audio
Nokia has made the World's FIRST audio and video call using 3D spatial audio on a Google Pixel 7 Pro smartphone.
Nokia placed the call over a cellular network using the 3GPP Immersive Video and Audio Services (IVAS) codec, allowing callers to hear “sound spatially in real-time.”
The IVAS codec is part of 5G Advanced, an upcoming upgrade to 5G networks that could offer faster speeds, more accurate cellular-based positioning, etc.
Currently, all phone calls made over a cellular network are monophonic, meaning audio is compressed into a single channel. Spatial audio, on the other hand, makes it seem like sounds are coming from different directions as they’re delivered through multiple channels.
The IVAS codec could enable spatial audio in a “vast majority” of smartphones with at least 2 microphones. However, it will still take few more years to be available in the market.

Microsoft Discovers Dirty Stream Vulnerability in Android Apps
Microsoft has discovered a critical security loophole dubbed "Dirty Stream," which could allow malicious Android apps to overwrite files in another application's home directory, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution and stealing valuable user information.
The flaw arises from the improper use of Android's content provider system, typically designed to facilitate secure data exchange between different applications on a device. It includes safeguards such as strict isolation of data, URIs (Uniform Resource Identifiers), and thorough validation of file paths to ward off unauthorized access.
When implemented incorrectly, custom intents, which are messaging objects that facilitate communication between components across Android apps, could bypass these security measures.
For example, vulnerable apps may fail to adequately check file names or paths, allowing a malicious app to sneak in harmful code camouflaged as legitimate files.
Microsoft’s investigation revealed that this vulnerability is NOT an isolated issue, as the research found incorrect implementations of the content provider system prevalent across many popular Android apps.
Affected apps include Xiaomi’s File Manager (1B+ downloads) and WPS Office (500M+ installs)

The GitHub CSS Injection Vulnerability
Today, a CSS injection vulnerability was discovered which allowed the GitHub profile to have some discord profile-like customization
Apart from profile CSS injection, a CSS injection on the issues tab was also discovered which resulted in the issues being hijacked.
When the link is clicked, it quickly flashes in black & white a Discord invitation link.
Next, a security researcher discovered ReadMe. MD files can force following/liking/logging people out of their GitHub profiles.
Oh, and you can make IP grabbers!
Working of the CSS Injection:
LaTeX is a CSS library that makes a website look like a LaTeX document. But it was discovered that using some special code on the Readme.MD page can tell the GitHub profile to load CSS.
Now when GitHub sees the payload, it tries to understand the latex, but instead, it ends up loading the CSS, changing the profile in ways it wasn't supposed by filling it with the gifs or images that are linked in the code

Xiaomi has already kanged many stuff from iOS, for eg the QS styles. At that time, Xiaomi did NOT ask users's opinion about iOS kanged QS styles
Now to show 'fake' sympathy towards its users, Xiaomi is running a survey asking users to chose between iOS recent styles, horizontal or the vertical style

• Your Country
• Current & last smartphone

Windows 11 AI 'Recall' Feature a Privacy & Security Nightmare
Last month, Microsoft announced the upcoming launch of Copilot+ Windows PCs with integrated AI hardware and software. One of the features is 'Recall', a tool that's designed to take regular snapshots of PC content to help users find anything they've seen or done on their machine.
Recall takes screenshots every 5 seconds when the content on the screen is different from the prior snapshot and stores the snapshots in a timeline, with AI software using OCR to make the text in the snapshots searchable
However, security researchers are calling Recall a privacy & security nightmare for Windows 11 users.
That's because this SQLite3 database file has a record of everything you’ve ever viewed on your PC in 'plain text' & it's NOT even unencrypted.
The recall feature can even take screenshots while you are entering sensitive info like passwords on websites, your personal messages etc & this sensitive info is NOT even redacted either.
Microsoft claims that a 'hacker' cannot exfiltrate Recall activity remotely. However, security researchers have found out that the database is accessible from the AppData folder even if you’re NOT an admin on a PC.
Microsoft has bydefault turned ON the recall feature on Copilot Plus PCs.
Alex Hagenah, a cybersecurity strategist and ethical hacker, has released a demo tool, dubbed TotalRecall and it can automatically extract and display everything Recall records on a laptop.
TotalRecall can automatically work out where the Recall database is on a laptop and then make a copy of the file, parsing all the data as it does so since the data is all plain text & unencrypted
Although the recall is only available for ARM 64 CPUs, you can emulate it if you want to try the recall feature & can see screenshots of the Recall SQLite3 database over here

Corning Unveiled Gorilla Glass 7i for Midrange Smartphones
Gorilla Glass 7i is aimed at mid-rangers and more affordable phones. This is Corning's 7th generation glass (like Victus) and the “i” stands for “industry-leading innovation for intermediate devices”.
Corning claims it can survive drops from up to 1m (3.3ft) onto rough surfaces like asphalt, while comparable glass alternatives can only go half as high before breaking.
Additionally, 7i is said to be 2X more scratch-resistant (or better) than those competing glasses.
Corning introduced Gorilla Glass 7i because it's 2024 & many smartphones such as Nothing Phone 2a or Poco F6 series still use Gorilla Glass 5 which was launched in 2016. Pixel 8a even uses Gorilla Glass 3 launched in 2013.
Thus, there was a need for a more modern offering, which is more affordable than Victus, while still matching the latest trend
