“Could I have a glass of cold water, please? It’s really hot out there.”
“It certainly is, and it’s just the beginning of summer. The temperature is supposed to soar in the next couple of days.”
“More bad news! Can you give me some news which is likely to cheer me up?”
“My cousin Jyotsna is paying me a visit.”
“That certainly is good news. When is she coming?”
“Tomorrow week.”
“Jyotsna is going to be here tomorrow? That’s really great news.”
“I didn’t say tomorrow. I said, tomorrow week.”
“What does tomorrow week mean?”
“What day is tomorrow?”
“Let me see. Tomorrow is Tuesday.”
“So, when you tell someone that you’ll meet him tomorrow week, what you are saying is that you will meet him the following Tuesday.”
“Not tomorrow, but eight days from today. My parents will be returning from their trip to Mumbai tomorrow week.”
“That’s a good example. It’s also possible to say Tuesday week.”
“I see. I hope to leave for Pune Saturday week. By the way, there’s a long weekend coming up. What do you plan to do? Going anywhere?”
“I’m not in the mood to go anywhere. I think I’ll stay home and loaf away the weekend sitting in front of the television.”
“Loaf away the weekend? What does it mean? Does it mean you’re going to be doing nothing?”
“What I’m saying is, I’m not going to be active this weekend. I’m going to be spending most of it sitting in front of the TV. I’m going to be wasting my time.”
“Isn’t that what you always do? Loaf away your weekends watching TV and playing video games?”
“That’s true. At least, I’m not like the kids of today. Most of them loaf away their entire summer vacation sitting in front of their computer.”
“Sad, but true. How about this example? When I was young, I enjoyed going out with my friends and painting the town red. Now, I just prefer to loaf away my evenings at home.”
“That’s a good example. Now then, can you….”
“Tell me, is there a difference between loaf away and loaf around?”
“Not really. In both cases, you are wasting your time. You are, as they say, idling away your time.”
“I see. So, can I say, quit loafing around and help me clean up this mess?”
“You certainly can. I’m not loafing around. I’m busy giving the finishing touches to the project. So, what do you plan to do this weekend?”
“Some of us thought of driving to Goa and having fun in the beach.”
“Goa during summer? Not the ideal place to be, if you ask me.”
“We know it’ll be hot. But we’ll be in the beach most of the time.”
“You’ll be on the beach, not in the beach. Last night, we spent a couple hours on the beach looking at the stars.”
“That sounds like a fun way to spend one’s time. In the afternoon, I saw several foreigners on the beach getting a suntan.”
“I never realised how difficult it was to run on the beach.”
“Yes, running on the sand is difficult. I’d better get going. Thanks for the glass of water. See you Tuesday week!”

1. “Scam”
“A word that is very much in the news these days. A scam is ‘a dishonest scheme; a swindle’.
So a fraudulent or a deceptive operation can be referred to as a scam.
Vijay was caught in an insurance scam.
The athlete was involved in a betting scam.
I have just come up with a scam that’s bound to make us all rich.
Scam has also another meaning; it is a ‘large scale plan to smuggle and distribute illegal drugs’.
Nobody is really sure about the origin of this word.
In fact, most dictionaries do not include scam; it is basically American slang.”
2. “Curtain lecture”
“The lecture refers to the scoldings that a wife gives her husband at bed time, especially at a time when all that he wants to do is sleep!
Just as we hang mosquito nets around our beds, it was common practice in England during the 17th and 18th centuries to hang drapes or curtains around their beds.
When the couple got into their bed and the curtain were drawn, the wife began her complaints. Hence the expression ‘curtain lecture’.
The expression became very popular during the mid 19th century when William Jerrold’s Mrs. Caudle’s Curtain-lectures was published in Punch.
The expression is still in use today.
It also refers to any dressing down or scolding given to anyone in private.
The scolding needn’t necessarily be given by a wife, it can be anyone — parents, relatives, friends, etc.
And what’s more, the place for the curtain lecture needn’t be restricted to the bedroom.
It can be given anywhere; but what is important is that it should be out of earshot of others.
In other words, the reprimand should not be heard by others.
My father gave me a curtain lecture on cigarette-smoking.”

Nicobar triangle: on the ₹72,000-crore project on Great Nicobar Island
Without wide consultations, Centre should not embark on the infrastructure project
The Union Tribal Affairs Ministry will be looking into the forest clearance paperwork of the ₹72,000-crore infrastructure project on Great Nicobar Island, a major initiative of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram told this newspaper. This is a significant step for the government, in its third term, as it brings to the surface the contentious and difficult choices that governments face while addressing the trilemma of infrastructure development, preserving pristine biodiversity respect and, being sensitive to the rights of the indigenous inhabitants, and tribals. The Great Nicobar Project involves developing a trans-shipment port, an international airport, township development, and a 450 MVA gas and solar-based power plant on the island. The project area is expected to cover over 130 sq. km. of pristine forest, and has been accorded a stage-1 environmental clearance — one of the mandatory prerequisites — by an expert committee. The government told Parliament in August 2023 that 9.6 lakh trees could be felled and ‘compensatory afforestation,’ for the loss of this unique rainforest ecosystem, had been planned, thousands of kilometres away, in the vastly different ecological zone of Haryana. The Galathea Bay in the Nicobar islands hosts multiple rare species including the leatherback turtle, and the project imperils their future.
The government contends that its motive is to leverage the strategic location with the Great Nicobar Island located only 90 km away from the western tip of the Malacca Strait, an important shipping route between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea. However, critics and some of the government’s policy advisers suggest that tourism is a key imperative for the exercise. The Environment Ministry, which is a regulator of environmental policy, has opted to be secretive about the project. Details on the environmental clearance process and the appraisal process, usually a public document, have been kept under wraps. There also seems to be haste on the part of the island administration to proceed while ignoring the rights of the local tribes — the Shompen in particular — regarding consent. The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes, a constitutional body, has demanded an explanation from the district administration on these grounds. The National Green Tribunal had tasked a committee, headed by the Secretary of the Environment Ministry, to submit a report on the approval of forest clearances. This too is not public. Without transparency, it would be foolhardy for the government to attempt such a massive upheaval of the islands and it should, with its new mandate, immediately correct course.
