Lebanon will not hold any direct meeting with "Israel," anywhere or under any format. benjamin netanyahu – a sitting prime minister wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes – is gaslighting the media by claiming he is sending a large Israeli delegation to meet a Lebanese one.
This is simply false. Lebanon has not agreed to any direct encounter. What Beirut has accepted, under American pressure, is the appointment of a new head of the Lebanese delegation: a civilian chosen with Washington’s approval to lead the “mechanism committee” tasked with supervising the ceasefire and addressing violations of the ceasefire that "Israel: systematically refuses to respect.
This appointment is not an innocent administrative adjustment. It is the first step in a broader manoeuvre to drag Lebanon into a political trap. Once a civilian is placed at the head of a military–technical committee, Washington’s next move will be to demand that this same civilian participate in a “practical meeting” with his Israeli counterpart. The tactic is clear: start with a symbolic concession, then leverage it to impose a second, much larger one. Lebanon is being prepared, deliberately and gradually, for direct talks that it has categorically rejected.
Hezbollah stands against this move even if approved by the Speaker Nabih Berri.
President Joseph Aoun is already under intense US scrutiny. Washington was irritated by his hesitation to support calls for Hezbollah’s disarmament, a measure that the Lebanese Army itself has said it cannot implement without risking internal collapse. The reality is well known inside Lebanon’s military command: Hezbollah is significantly stronger than the Lebanese Army, and any attempt to forcibly disarm it would fracture the institution and ignite domestic conflict.
Prime Minister Nawaf Salam’s insistence on disarmament is viewed within the army as politically unrealistic and strategically dangerous.
If Aoun continues to accommodate every American demand, he will find himself trapped in a cycle of concessions that lead Lebanon toward unprecedented internal division. Step by step, pressure by pressure, the country is being pushed toward a political and social rupture that its fragile institutions cannot absorb.
Lebanon is standing at a narrow line: either it maintains its longstanding policy of refusing direct negotiation with a genocidal entity, "Israel," outside a comprehensive political settlement, or it slides into a dangerous dynamic engineered from abroad, one that threatens both its internal balance and its national security.
