Does a trader need to be interested in the global economy?
Before technical analysis was firmly established in the arsenal of traders, the answer to this question was much easier to give. Well, how else can you predict trends? Traders of the past did not have indicators, but also charts. Therefore, they closely followed the economic and political news... but not always the conclusions based on observations of the current situation in the market and in politics turned out to be correct. Oh, if a person were able, by studying the past and analyzing the present, to make accurate predictions for the future — how much calmer our life would become! But, as practice shows, analysts are much better able to explain the reasons for events that have already happened than to predict the realities of tomorrow.
Ed Seikota, the creator of the first computer program for trading, was pushed to the idea of mathematical trend analysis by frustrations in trading. The failed silver deal dealt him a severe blow: he could not understand why the prices of precious metals were falling, although the "bullish" trend seemed to be guaranteed by economic and political news. It was illogical, unbelievable. Later, Seikota repeatedly noticed that forecasts arising from economic news often lead to losses — and became one of the apologists of technical analysis.
But technical analysis is not omnipotent either — otherwise trading on the stock exchange would be measured and predictable. Indicators often lie. Sometimes technical analysis data contradict market behavior.
Michael Kovel has developed such a rule for himself: if the data of technical and fundamental analysis differ, it is necessary to suspend trading. It is dangerous to act in such a situation: it is better to take a wait-and-see attitude.
So interest in the global economy is natural for a trader who wants to increase the chances of success. It is not necessary to absolutize this source of information, but it is also not worth ignoring.
