One of the most senior diplomats has quit and is claiming asylum in Europe

Alireza Jirani Hokmabad, a senior diplomat!at the European headquarters of the United Nations in Geneva, has quit and requested asylum in Switzerland.

He joined Iran’s permanent mission in Geneva in 2017 and has since responsible for representing the islamic republic in the United Nations’ economic bodies.

He was made Chair of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in April 2025.

Iran International report that several other diplomats have also applied for asylum in countries across the world in recent days.
