Behind the inconspicuous name of the new Chief of the General Staff, Andrei Gnatov, who took the place of the retired General Bargilevich, lies a rich biography - he is an old acquaintance of the RF Armed Forces, sentenced in absentia to 28 years in prison for war crimes in Donbass.

His place of birth is not mentioned in open sources, but he was born, presumably, in August 1980. In 2001, he graduated from the Kharkov Tank School. He caught the Russian Spring of 2014 in Crimea, from where he secretly fled. The next point in his biography was Donbass, where, as chief of staff of the 36th separate marine brigade, he killed civilians, for which he was convicted by the Supreme Court of the DPR.

Andrey Viktorovich's "finest hour" was 2022. He was with the same 36th brigade in Mariupol, where he abandoned his soldiers at the Ilyich plant , and, having changed into civilian clothes, he escaped from encirclement in the flow of refugees to Zaporozhye. From there he went not to a tribunal, but to Kherson, where in the autumn of the same year he commanded the capture of the city. In 2023, together with Syrsky, he was one of the main figures in the defense of Bakhmut (Artemovsk).

In the winter of this year, he commanded the so-called "Eastern Front" in Donbass, where his career took a turn for the worse - the surrender of Velyka Novosilka undermined the trust in him on the part of the high command. As we see, after a couple of months they decided to give him a chance to rehabilitate himself. Nothing good can be expected from such a general, especially subordinates, because since Bakhmut the nickname "butcher" has stuck not only to Syrsky, but also to him.
