Hello, folks! Gusto is a payroll service platform used by lots of companies in the US. They are a global team hiring across multiple locations including Canada, US, and Turkey. Yes, Turkey. I’m only promoting the open positions in Turkey since Turkey has accepted many people from both Russia and Ukraine. A thought that resonated with me today is “GO WHERE YOU’RE TREATED BEST!” by Andrew Henderson the Nomad Capitalist.
Having everything in one location i.e. real estate, business, investement is never a winning strategy and with the global world it is sad not to be using the options that the world is offering. I view these challenges that I’m running into right now as a fun quest for feaguring out a recipe that will work for me.
Here is Andrew’s video I’ve watched today. He summarizes the idea of territorial tax coutries i.e. location that don’t levy taxes on foreign-source income. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnlMY4N5VrE
He only mentions specific countries that have this policy though. But there other locations e.g. individual US states that have it as well. This policy may also apply under specific conditions e.g. if you are not a tax resident of a specific country you might be exepmt from their local income taxes.
With things going on in Ukraine and Russia, I’ve been feeling stressed and discouraged for the past two weeks. It is painful to see the world and the future that we’ve been building for ourselves and our families to fall apart without being able to prevent it.
I’ve been trying to help my friends in both countries to go through the events as well as to save my own ass. I’m finally relatively safe and looking into various options to get a legal entity outside of Russia to be able to continue working and getting paid.
I’ve been advocating for location independence since the inception of this channel and I think it is important as never before. Location independence means I live in one place, own a legal entity in another, work with clients and customers from a third place and I have a backup plan for each.
I haven’t been well prepared the current scenario but I’ve been blessed to keep my job and I will keep sharing the things I consider with you as I go.

As a contractor, I need to take care of my own health insurance. I’ve been looking into various options. My initial need was to get the coverage during my international travels as I have some basic public healthcare while I’m in Russia but that lost importance for me personally since I haven’t been able to travel internationally.
But on the larger scope, companies started hiring internationally more thanks to the pandemic and hence there is an ask for better corporate benefits even for international contractors. Insurance companies have sensed the demand and came up new international offers.
So today is for SafetyWing. They are a YC W18 banch participants, raised a $12M Series A round in 2021 and they are hiring for several fully remote jobs. Note that all the roles require availability 8-11AM PST.

As I was looking into Kumospace, I figured they are fully remote and are hiring globally. So today is for Kumospace. I personally like Gather more, it is more pleasant for hte eye and they have avatars which I genuinly enjoy creating and dressing up.
Kumospace though appears to be more popular and seems like they are having a better marketing campaign and connections within the tech companies as they are listing companies liek Google, Amazon, and Spotify as their customers. They raised 3M in seed round last year and they’ve got strong ambition to grow and add mroe exciting features. They operate in US Estern Time so when you are interviewing make sure you clarify the overlap that they require.

I get asked a lot about how to optimize resumes and cover letters for the global tech market. When I started my remote job search back in 2015, I didn't know most of the things I know now and it took me almost 2 years before I landed my first remote jobs in tech. I learned everything the hard way and now it takes me 2 months to find a new remote job.
There are a lot of things that make your resume more appealing for global remote companies. To add a little bit more weight to it. This guide and template is used by the Harvard students and it helps them land their first jobs in top tech companies with almost no professional experience other than summer internships. As far as I understood, we should disregard the locations mentioned in the listings since they claim to be remote-first.
They literally say: you’ll be able to bring your best self to the table no matter where in the world you are located! We fully support and empower an international environment, where all cultures, mindsets, and backgrounds are equally welcome and appreciated.

Thank you for your reactions under the previous publication! As promised I’d like to share some of my ideas about re-locating my legal entity outside of Russia for the time being. Actually, I’m looking for al long term solution here as I don’t see myself paying any more taxes to support violence towards my friends, colleagues and their families and homes as well as my own country and my business.
So currently, I have two goals, one is to restore my payments from both my employeer and my consulting business. To do this, I’m considering getting digital nomad visas but they seem to still require some form of legal entity outside of the destination country which is not an option for me.
Another option I’m considering is UAE. A sole establishment there which seems to be curious because of no tax on income from outside UAE. There are free trade zones in other coutries as well which I’m reading up on. UAE seems to be a good option for me as they have a better reputation than other countries plus they are not in any of the economic black lists.
Another argument for UAE is that with their reputation I can be charging a higher rate for my services without having the thoughts of being associated with a third world country. It will be an additional argument to support my confidence during negotiations ragardless of where I’m going to be located atm.
Focusmate is a tool that matches remote workers for mutual accountability. You can basically find an accountatility buddy to sit with you in a virtual room while you are getting your work done. When they first started one of the founders of the startup would be willing to hop on a working session with you! His calendar doesn’t have any empty slot atm but seems like the still offe that option!

I’ve been experimenting with Zettlekasten note-taking method and I’ve been enjoying it. I’ve tried tools like Obsidian, RoamResearch, Notion, Goodnotes. I even attempted to apply for a QA role at Goodnotes last summer.
Today I ran into RemNote, they offer a similar note-taking tool for as they say “thinking and learning”. It is an MIT startup with an initial seed round of 2.8M investment in September 2021.
They are hiring remotely, they are a team of 14 people. It is great opprotunity to get experience working at a small startup, close to the founders and decision makers — a valuable experience that you will never get at a large company. Especially valuable if you are planning to be a founder yourself in the future.

Creator economy is at the top of the buzzword chat of the year. As I’m implementing my own consulting services and digital products, I’ve been looking into a few different payments options that I can use.

Last week I recorded a video about company values. Buffer has been preaching tranparency for years and they have taken it to the altimate extreme last year by making their team members' salaries public.
And by public, I mean they published every employee's salary online with names and the exact amount. I haven't seen this kind of transparency before. It is definitely setting a precedent for other companies.
