I am now respecting Mint and Ubuntu

I've been a Linux user for a year. I started with Arch Linux because I felt like Mint and Ubuntu is not trendy enough. Arch seemed trendy (especially on communities like /r/unixporn). I learned a lot by installing and repairing Arch countless times, but i wanted to try other distros too, and I decided to try Ubuntu and Mint.

After trying Linux Mint and Ubuntu, wow! They're so much more stable and just work. Coming from an environment where every update could break your system, that stability is incredibly valuable.

I just wanted to share that the "trendy" distro isn't always the best fit. Use what works best for your daily needs. Arch Linux is great, but I shouldn't have dismissed beginner distros so easily. I have a lot more respect for them now.

OpenSSF and OpenJS warn about attempts to take over projects similar to XZ-case

LMDE . Vivaldi . Brave Anything I download saves to /run/user/doc/1000/3242332/

Anyone have any idea why this is happening and how I can fix it? I've read a similar problem being caused by Snaps but I don't even have Snaps enabled on this machine. I do believe my Vivaldi is Flatpak. It's pretty annoying. Thanks!

15 characters of code on a brick?

Our son is graduating with his BS in a month and we are incredibly proud of him! His university has a “brick” fundraiser - where for a small donation you can personalize a brick that is then installed on a campus pathway. You get three lines - of up to 15 characters each line.

Are there any Linux lines of code, that would be fitting, but less than 15 characters? Or even 2 lines of 15? Something that signifies a new start? A beginning? Awesomeness?

We can go sappy, but I thought it would be fun to have something CS-related instead. He loves Linux. I think it was one of the reasons he went into CS.

Thanks!

ETA: feel free to help a parent out and translate what the code means (and yes, we will independently verify ;)

And, if you’re our kid, please just pretend you never saw this post!

Zephyrus G15 - CachyOS running OobaBooga and MeloTTS at the same time. I love this laptop!

Several days ago, I replaced Ubuntu (for no reason) with CachyOS which was just as easy to install as Ubuntu. Not much configuring, everything I need works.

Today, I installed miniconda3 and thanks to the NVIDIA 3080 (2021 model) and 32GB of memory, I can run ooba booga and MeloTTS side by side. I now have the best of both worlds.

LMDE is the bees titties.

Getting back into Linux after being a Mac guy for the past 15 years or so and I've been distro hopping the past few months searching for the right distro for me.

Elementary, Solus, Debian, but I think LMDE is the best of all worlds.

Mint was my favorite distro before I left linux for the Mac world and it seems to be one of the best overall distros. The best of Debian plus the best of Mint without anything to do with the mess Ubuntu's become.

I love it.

If you're looking for a great all around distro and are considering Mint I highly suggest LMDE!

Free Open-Source Event Logging

Hi,

Anyone know any software that is free and open-source that I could use to monitor both Windows (Event Logs) and Linux logs? I would like to filter and create dashboards. Any solutions I see dont specifically talk about both Windows and Linux. I am not looking for metrics on performance. Purely logs like who logged in, what commands were ran, who installed what, and so on. Unfortunately, Splunk is off the table as a solution. I never experience any logging solution besides Splunk, otherwise, I am new to the scene. This would be a local install only and not on the cloud. Thank you!

Looking for a media/shortcut focused Remote Desktop app with features like the one I’m used to on windows

Hi, Linux newb here. I used to use this app on my windows install to control media players and remote into my computer over my local network in case I’m in the other room, etc. I love the media player controls and the ability to make custom shortcuts that I can invoke with Siri. Does anything like this exist for Linux mint?I’m running the latest LTS on Cinnamon.

Here’s the app in question:

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/remote-mouse-keyboard-pro/id884153085

I see people mentioning KDE Connect, and with a lot of effort, I could probably set up the media controls, but the Remote Desktop functionality doesn’t quite do what I’m looking for. I can control my computer through KDE Connect, but I can’t see my computer screen on the app. Sorry if this is the wrong flair

I want to use linux, but I'm very windows depended for my job, will a VM work well?

So here is the thing. I'm a graphic designer, I have being back and forth with linux distros for many years but never kept anything for my everyday use, because to put it simple I can't make it work with the windows software that I need and the alternative software in linux doesn't work for me.

TLDR Anybody have any experience on working with windows and apps in them, through a virtual box in a linux distro? How is the response and the overall speed? Does it takes a big performance toll in a somewhat modern machine?

So anyway, lately MS is actively trying to piss me off as much as possible, I have stayed so far in W10 but it is a matter of time now to lose support for the system. The news from the W11 front are horrible, forced AI crap, forced ads in an OS that you paid already to use, the UI is probably the worst I have experienced so far (and I'm 40yo, I was there from W3.11) and anyway, I HATE IT!

So far my gaming needs are starting to be more and more covered after Steam Deck released, so I don't worry about this front (I don't even game with latest AAA games), but on the work side things are not sunny.

First of all I have ditched adobe already and work with affinity programs, I hoped this may be a little bit easier to workaround with wine but so far it is not that simple, if it even work at all.

Then is my printer and vinyl cutter that I use in the shop, I managed to install the printer in my test machine (macbook 6.1 with elementary OS) but the print preferences dialog box is not meant for production and can't be used in any efficient way for my everyday needs, especially when it comes in specialized prints on non standard papers and sizes.

The vinyl cutter doesn't have any drivers and what I have seen yes it will do basic cutting with inkcut for inkscape but more advanced functionality is not working (kiss cut, contour cut etc).

So anyway I'm sure there are a ton of small things here and there that I will miss if I move completely in linux for working, so does anyone have any experience with running a virtual box or something like that, with a full windows installation and apps in there? How does it perform? How is the lag? I have 2 somewhat modern systems with R5 5500, 16GB DDR4 RAM, SSDs and the a Radeon 5500XT on one system and a Radeon HD 7850 on the other.

Most of the software I want to run is the trio of Affinity programs, but if it works well I may consider using it in the home system that my wife also run her architecture programs.

Thank you for your patience with that wall of text, but I wanted to be as precise as possible.

Working through some strange SAMBA AD integration issues

We have Samba servers on OEL8. They are joined to AD and have group IDs and User IDs mapped with AD. After what appears to be a random interval of time, the ability to authenticate using UNC path stops and throws invalid auth error, while UNC by IP continues to work just fine. We did find that if we break the system from the domain and readd, it resets something and works as intended for another unspecified period of time, then starts doing it again. We have two systems on OEL8, both of them have this behavior, We have Centos 7 boxes that are configured virtually the same way, with zero issues. The worry is two-fold. First, will this issue eventually stop auth by IP from working, but even bigger, 2) Why does this work for a random interval of time then stop out of the blue, what are we likely missing? Does anyone have any ideas here?

which browser do you use, if not firefox or chromium-based? and why? how does it handle stuff like sync across devices, passwords, extensions (or just adblock in particular)? if it doesn't do you use some kind of alternative to handle it?

im currently just using firefox, but im curious if there's something more minimal out there. i know there's epiphany and falkon from Gnome/KDE, does anyone daily drive them? if so, how are they?
