Why didn't Returnal catch on?
I've been playing it recently and it's an amazing game. I never see anyone mention it, but it has all the makings of a cult classic. Endless replayability, challenging gameplay, skill based difficulty, amazing graphics, great atmosphere. So why aren't people playing it?

Context on Payment Provider + Steam actions, from somebody with knowledge of the industry
Disclaimer: I'm a critical infrastructure auditor, which includes, amongst others, financial institutions and payment providers.
The payment provider pressure on Steam is due to AML (anti-money laundering) and KYC (know your customer) regulations, and not simply by ethnical or moral concerns of the payment provider.
It was triggered by a recent "scandal", where one of Europe's biggest payment providers supposedly didn't vet their porn-selling customers (considered high risk business) thoroughly enough and the payment provider was held partially responsible for the content sold on those platforms, despite only being a 3rd party. Investigations are ongoing. Other payment providers are panicking right now and trying to get rid of anything porn related (which can't thoroughly proof that its content is regulatory compliant). This includes porn games on Steam. Note that payment providers are even more harshly regulated than the retailer (Steam) itself.
There are some variations between countries, e.g. "face sitting" would be illegal in the UK since 2014 (EDIT: apparently it's legal again since 2019, thanks porn expert u/hicks12), however the biggest topic nobody dares to touch of course are Hentai games with drawings of questionable (implicit) age. In the past, rules for suggestive underage paintings have not been regularly enforced, as it's a pandoras box that could rob the church of any classical painting with naked baby-bodied angels.
However, with the regulator's decision to consider payment providers accomplice or at least in violation of know-your-customer principles for forwarding money to a platform with at least partially illegal content, as it recently happened in Europe, payment providers in general are not willing to take the risk anymore. To get back to the topic of suggestive hentai games on Steam: Nobody wants to be the payment provider that aided (supposed) CP.
Yelling at the regulator to stop payment providers from censoring Steam will objectively do nothing, since payment providers are not the root cause, but the regulator itself. While regulators differ, most Western countries tend to align their regulations for payment providers and banks, to allow their economies easier access to international markets.
Now, what should you ask for?
More clear and more enforceable rules regarding where the line is drawn for NSFW games and depictions, in order to prevent censorship from unarguably highly questionable hentai games, to spread over to inoffensive games with some adult content such as, e.g., the Witcher series.

EDIT: I have tried my best to be constructive and informative, but things are getting less constructive and I feel like in some instance, people end up shooting the messenger here. Personally, I don't care about what you do in your free time, do whatever!, but that's not how regulations work. I was trying to inform to the best of my knowledge, that's it. Anger at me is displaced. I really need a break now. Have a great weekend.

if you want visa and mastercard to back down from censoring steam and other services, gum up their phone lines by overwhelming them with calls.
This entire debacle got started because a right-wing conservative group in australia pretending to be feminists flooded visa and mastercard with a thousand phone calls and pressured them into controlling who could and couldn't sell what.
The exact solution to this is to do the same thing to them but much, much worse. it took maybe a thousand calls to push visa and mastercard into this, I promise you, if you call them and flood their customer support and service lines with calls you WILL get them to back down on this censorship crap. it will make it very difficult for them to do any sort of business because you're gumming up their phone lines and overwhelming them. E-mails won't work because they can filter those.
You're not calling to get customer support's help with anything, you're calling to make their phone bill too expensive, you're calling them to make it nearly impossible for any real customer support assistance to get through. You're calling to complain and make it abundantly clear that if they don't back down this WILL affect their bottom line eventually. The entire point of calling them is to bully them into giving up because this all started because these right wing freaks started this off by doing the same thing. Make it abundantly clear how much worse their situation will be if they don't drop this censorship stuff. Eventually someone at the top is gonna notice the phone bill, find out what's been happening, and panic and walk this shit back immediately.
they won't have a choice because the alternative is to stop being able to do business entirely once enough lawsuits from people who couldn't contact customer support hit visa and mastercard.
This is how you protest censorship like this, you make it impossible for a big corporation to do business. You scorched earth them hard. it WILL have an effect I promise. they won't have a choice but to be impacted. So call them, not to get help, but just to complain. call them over, and over and over. do not stop calling them. Make it a daily ritual. whatever it takes to force their customer support to slow to a crawl.
it's important that you bully big corporations when they overstep like this because they never stop overstepping until you do.
I don't wanna hear any "customer support can't help but you can e-mail them" you are part of the problem, e-mails can be easily filtered (unless you e-mail a petabyte zip bomb but I uh, don't endorse that >.>) their call lines being overwhelmed will scare the shit out of them. after all, it only took 1000 to get them to start censoring the internet, imagine what tens of thousands of backlash calls will do. imagine what the damage from just our retaliation will do. I promise you, flooding them with calls WILL work. if they didn't want that to happen, maybe they shouldn't have folded when a bunch of conservatives pressured them in the first place and start threatening the bottom line of multiple businesses with their new terms and conditions. This is not a situation where "you'll be the better man" if you don't do this. you need to fight back against this. we all need to fight back against this. Because this sort of thing is an ever tightening circle. it won't stop at porn, porn's just the testing ground to prove they can do it. it'll be anything they don't like, literature, music, anything.
If you want a free internet, make visa and mastercard pay for this by disrupting their business however you can. this isn't going to end well otherwise.
