In the Nehruvian era when politics was all in favour of upper castes it was not called as caste politics at that time. But it so happened then that it favoured the upper castes.
People have been taught that 'caste politics' only means lower caste politics.
In the Nehruvian era when politics was all in favour of upper castes it was not called as caste politics at that time. But it so happened then that it favoured the upper castes. And we use phrases like 'it so happened' trying to avoid the fact that it too was a kind of caste politics.
The same with the Modi regime. 2014 is often seen as a new era free from 'caste politics' meaning, of course, lower caste politics. The Modi era is not recognised as the return of upper caste dominance in politics, which it, of course, is.
At the same time, I don't want to say that the Nehruvian era was some giant conspiracy by upper castes. That is not necessary; the point is that there was a systematic bias in place. This bias was made invisible by the dominant ideology of the day and this is how ideology works
As political scientist Christophe Jaffrelot notes, the Nehruvian state’s "casteless" rhetoric allowed upper castes to consolidate power while presenting their rule as universalist.

People here with different thinking and opinions that aren't mainstream in Indian society how do you get through your day living in a classroom or workplace?
My college session will be starting on 1st August and I don't wanna mess up things due to my different POV. I prefer dressing up in an alternative manner i.e., all black and sometimes neutrals and we all know that alternative fashion isn't mainstream in India and the way we dress up says a lot about us. There are times when I was mocked by my family members bcuz they hate the way Black attracts negative aura (Ik it's all nonsense). Even one of my classmate in 7th grade commented on my Top during Christmas party saying that are your all clothes like that or do you buy them from street vendors and her friends were laughing too. When I was in UKG I still remember how a random girl who used to go with me in school van once said that black is a color of bad people because I was wearing a frock which had black frills attached on it's border. Whenever I've asked my parents to let me celebrate Halloween by myself because I love spooky atmosphere and the fun of dressing up in costumes of your choice they always reply that beta there are a lot of festivals in India it's ok for westerners to celebrate such things because they don't get to have much fun like us. Like dude how is my happiness dependent on others' 😭😭regarding what to enjoy or not? When I was in 11th grade I asked my school librarian for books on Ancient Egypt because I always feel anemoia whenever I study their past culture and monuments. Due to my demand she replied, "You wanna move to Egypt or smth else ?" which made me totally blank. Also college life is a phase where we can embrace individuality & sometimes I have tough time being with people who aren't like me. Due to my anger issues I often develop excessive anger towards such which gives birth to big issues. Hope y'all get me

About today's General Strike
Can anybody here provide some discussion material on the four labour codes and the changes brought in by the BJP? Like, good online articles, videos, podcasts, or any other reading resource? Would like to read up on the issue, and the numbered news articles aren't of any help.
Thanks :)

I was a hardcore rightwing supporter.....but things are changing now
Until last month, I considered myself a staunch right-winger. I genuinely believed in the ideals of Hindutva, and that’s what drew me towards the BJP. But recently, I’ve started questioning everything — not because of external influence, but because of what I see happening around me.
I’m a Marathi, and it's disheartening to see the increasing hate being directed towards Marathis — not just from trolls, but also from certain right-wing influencers. They’ve gone from mocking MNS to spreading hate against Marathas and even Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. A lot of this seems to come from bhaiyas from UP and Bihar dominating right-wing spaces online, twisting video contexts to paint Marathis negatively.
Language isn’t the only issue. BJP’s hypocrisy is now out in the open. The same party that mocked Kejriwal for freebies is now announcing their own, just to win elections. Corruption at local levels is rampant and ignored.
One thing that really hit me was a video by the YouTuber Open Letter showing how the Congress government actually deported more Bangladeshi and Rohingya illegals than BJP — not slightly more, a lot more.
Now I’m confused. Not because I want to blindly switch sides, but because I truly want to support a party that stands for truth, justice, and the national interest — and the BJP doesn’t seem to live up to its own principles anymore.

How does one navigate through news sources? filter propaganda from truth?
I am young and have been shamefully ignorant about most of the political situations natively and globally for most of my life, the ignorance coming from a place of privilege ofc. But as of recent I've been trying to invest myself more into the current and historical affairs etc. What I wanna know is, with there being so much propaganda around, like say the western media's washing of the israel-palestine issue, or say UC bs about caste issues being literally written down as books, how does one navigate through them? How do I know for certain the status of hamas being a resistance without falling for the western media traps telling me otherwise? how do I know for certain that godi media propaganda really IS godi propaganda? What I've noticed both on the left and right side of the political spectrums is the tendency of full denial of anything not fitting one's narrative. I would call myself a leftist, but have seen countless number of leftists that simply deny there being an inherent issue within Islam's core tenets which is deeply problematic, all because they face prosecution and are a minority. Both sides sell their own narrative while being wilfully blind to any issue that doesn't align with them. So in such situations, how does one decide which news media to trust? which speakers to listen to? which books can be historically verified? you get the gist. The question itself might seem like something very elementary level/naive, but we all start somewhere

Protests Work!
On June 24, the Election Commission released the instructions for Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar. With this exercise, 8 crore voters would be forced to fill voter enrollment forms, out of which over 4 crore voters would further need to establish their citizenship.
Reports revealed that the majority of the voters had none of the identity certificates required by the EC.
While the opposition parties, the civil society, and even former election commissioners raised questions and criticised the move, the Election Commission kept brushing aside these questions.
At the same time, the BJP, its IT cell, and its propaganda media, started justifying this exercise as another masterstoke.
It is obvious that the ruling party wanted to use this exercise to raise the bogey of infiltrators, which it has routinely done in every state election, from Jharkhand to Maharashtra.
Yet, the genuine struggle of the people, and their fears of disenfranchisement, could not be hidden by the propaganda. Contrary to the false claims made by the EC, the majority of the people have not even received the electoral forms yet. The BLO themselves express their frustration. Thousands of government teachers have been pushed into the exercise, disrupting the classes. The people are running from pillar to post, to get their documents, in the middle of agriculture season and during floods.
On July 9, the opposition parties called for a Bihar Bandh, a total shutdown of the state, against the Votebandi. The bandh was a massive success.
Yet, the narrative on social media suggests that the common people are in support of this exercise.
However, today's report in the New Indian Express reveals a shocking reality. BJP supporters are extremely angry at the party. The state BJP is worried that this exercise might lose them the election.
> “SIR has started putting us on the wrong wicket. Whenever we call the voters over their phones to know what they expect from the BJP and how they would help the BJP realise their dreams, the majority of the people express their resentment against the SIR and the BJP,” said a member of the party’s telephone-based survey team.
> Ramesh Kumar of Hajipur claimed, “When I got a call from the BJP tele-survey team about how I would be helping BJP in the upcoming Assembly election, my anger got the better of me because many of my family members received slips asking them to submit documents in order to remain in the electoral rolls. Our names have been on the voters’ list for over a couple of decades, and now the ECI, which is doing SIR at the behest of the BJP, is asking me for proof of my citizenship.”
> Another survey team member revealed, “Due to the ongoing SIR exercise, 6-7 out of 10 people contacted for their views and expectations from the BJP bluntly vented their anger against the party. It is not a good sign for the party before the election.”
> Many affected citizens, even long-time BJP supporters, claim the SIR has forced them to reconsider their support. “Aap kuch bhi chhap do, BJP wale apki baton ko nahi manenge aur SIR chalte rahega. Result will be very drastic this time—earth-shattering for BJP,” said Nirmal Kumar, a BJP worker from Patna. He added, “I also gave a dressing down to the caller the moment he asked me how I would be helping the BJP in this election.”
> Preferring anonymity, several BJP workers and leaders from both the party and its allies—JDU and LJP (RV)—expressed frustration over the exercise. They said many rural voters, who don’t possess birth or residential certificates, have been asked to submit them to stay on the rolls. “Believe me or not, but 15-20% voters of the BJP and 10-15% voters of the JDU would not be able to vote this time as they would not be able to furnish the required documents. They have Aadhaar and EPICs, but those are not accepted,” said a senior BJP leader.
> Rajesh Kumar from Gaya said 50-60 BJP-supporting families in his village have been asked to provide eligibility documents. “Now they would not be able to vote if their names get

Why isn't Mayawati discussed more often as a feminist icon in mainstream or online feminist spaces?
So I have recently started studying Political Science and IR for UPSC,
This isn’t a post to glorify any political figure, but rather to examine a pattern I’ve noticed across online feminist discourse, especially on social media and Reddit.
When we talk about feminist icons, we often highlight women who are successful, assertive, self-made, and who challenge patriarchal norms. But more often than not, these figures tend to come from relatively privileged or well packaged backgrounds, social media influencers, authors, or global figures who are highly visible, polished, and aligned with the dominant aesthetics of internet feminism.
Which brings me to Mayawati, someone who, on paper, checks many of the boxes typically associated with feminist ideals:
✅ Born into a Dalit family, she rose through deep caste and gender-based social barriers.
✅ Entered politics without dynastic backing.
✅ Held the office of Chief Minister of India’s largest state multiple times.
✅ Maintained political independence in a male-dominated arena.
✅ Faced years of public ridicule, media bias, and misogyny, yet remained electorally relevant for decades.
Despite this, she’s rarely discussed, if at all, in feminist conversations online. Her name doesn’t come up in listicles or Instagram reels celebrating “strong women,” nor is she framed as an example of feminist resilience in Indian or global discussions.
So the question that lies here:
Is there a reason someone like Mayawati doesn’t resonate within popular feminist spaces?
Is it due to Her association with realpolitik and caste-based mobilization?
Or The lack of media-driven narrative around her achievements? Or maybe A discomfort with her unapologetic style or perceived authoritarianism? Or does she not align with the version of empowerment that’s become dominant on digital platforms, more aesthetic, lifestyle-oriented, and individualistic?
I’m asking this not to defend or attack her, but to better understand how feminist icons are constructed, and whether power that comes from resistance (rather than relatability) is sometimes overlooked in favor of softer, more digestible narratives.
Genuinely curious to hear diverse views, especially from Indian women and those who engage actively with intersectional feminism.

Islamophobia in Hindus
I have seen that among the Hindu society it is mostly the “Upper” Caste Hindus who have an irrational hatred for Indian Muslims they consistently wish for their genocide or persecution. I am a Marathi so I know that all Hindu nationalists organisations like RSS, Hindu Mahasabha were formed by Marathi Brahmins and even in North side they are now being run by Thakurs Rajputs and others.Meanwhile others in Hindu society like SCs,STs,NT,VJNT they don’t OBCs have developed it now after the Hindutva Brigade enslaved them but they didn’t have it naturally, What could be the reason behind this.
