Study: Political Memecoins Lead to Investor Disillusionment

A survey study of 1,066 crypto investors found that nearly 80% bought president-endorsed memecoins like CAR, LIBRA, and TRUMP.

About 37% of these investors were first-time buyers who were lured by political relevance as well as the viral marketing of the memecoins. However, approximately 21% of these investors “quit crypto altogether after their experience with these coins.”

In 2023, the top 49 crypto apps were downloaded a total of 6.2M times. By 2024, that figure soared to 15M, reflecting a stunning year-on-year 41% increase.

Most of these downloads occurred in the second half of 2024, with crypto app installs exceeding 1M per month in the final quarter. December saw the biggest surge, with 2.8M downloads.

📊 The number of BTC wallets is dropping rapidly

Even with crypto like ETH and XRP continuing to see their networks grow with more and more wallets, the same is not true for BTC. Crypto's top cap has 277.24K less non-empty wallets than it did 3 weeks ago.

The decline appears to be primarily due to small traders dropping out of the markets due to fear of further crypto-wide price drops. Historically, these declines in retail belief are a positive sign for mid to long term price performances. When coins are shed by small traders, whales and sharks accumulate them and use their capital to drive up markets when crowd FUD is at its highest.

FBI, SEC among top agencies requesting data from Kraken in 2024

Crypto exchange Kraken had a 39% increase in regulatory and enforcement data requests in 2024. The report, released on Feb. 19, said Kraken received 6,826 data requests from 71 countries in 2024. The United States accounted for the largest share of requests, with 1,951 inquiries.

Canadian and UK banks invest over $280M in Bitcoin ETFs

The Bank of Montreal (BMO), one of Canada’s largest banks, has allocated $150M to spot Bitcoin ETFs.

According to a filing with the US SEC, BMO’s largest holding is BlackRock’s IBIT, accounting for $139M of its total investment. The remaining $11M is spread across Ark 21Shares Bitcoin ETF, Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund, and Grayscale Bitcoin Trust.

On the other side of the Atlantic, UK-based Barclays Bank has also entered the crypto ETF sector, revealing $131M in holdings in BlackRock’s IBIT.
