Editor's Blog: A Brief Hiatus And A Listening Recommendation
No doubt you have already noticed, but content on the site is a little slower to be posted. I am in Italy with my wife in between the two Misanos, and am alternating a vacation during the day and work in the evening. Pieces are being written, but they are taking a little longer than normal. With neither MotoGP nor WorldSBK this weekend, there is a chance to catch our breath.

Who gains the most from MotoGP's engine freeze?
Changes in regulations are almost always a source of conflict between manufacturers in the MotoGP. This is logical, because each defends its own interests based on the situation it faces at a given time.Next week, at the start of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, the Grand Prix Commission plans to approve the introduction of the engine freeze, a measure that will be implemented in 2025 and maintained ...Keep reading

Assessing Michelin's New Front Tire: A Big Step In The Right Direction
Assessing Michelin's New Front Tire: A Big Step In The Right Direction

For the past four years or so, there have been growing complaints about issues with Michelin's front tire. The increasing loads put on the front by the ride-height devices and by aerodynamics have raised temperatures and pressures, and the increasing size of aerodynamic wakes have made harder and harder to find fresh air to cool down the front tire by pulling out from behind the rider in front of you.
To address that, Michelin have been working on a new construction front tire. Initially, Michelin had planned to test it in 2020 and introduce it in 2021. The Covid-19 pandemic put a stop to that, with testing halted during that year, and by the time a normal testing schedule resumed, the bikes had changed so much, the role of ride-height devices and aerodynamics increased so much, that Michelin had to go back to the drawing table and redesign the front for the massive loads it now had to endure.

2024 Misano MotoGP Test Morning Session Times: Martin Quickest As Teams Get Back To Work
It has been a busy day so far of the MotoGP riders at Misano. After a delay of around an hour, as the track dried from heavy overnight rain, the teams got to work on a track cleaned of rubber.
Honda have Luca Marini and Joan Mir back, the Repsol Honda riders fit enough after their bout of illness to take part in this important test. HRC have a major new aerodynamic package with a ground effect fairing similar to the Aprilia, Ducati, and Yamaha. That fairing is being swapped between Johann Zarco's garage and the Repsol Honda garage.

The Misano episode of the Paddock Pass Podcast is out! In this episode, Neil and David sit in a commentary booth overlooking the Misano front straight and ponder the effect a few sprinkles of rain had on what turned into a fascinating race.
Neil and David discuss Marc Marquez' return to victory, just 7 days after his last, Jorge Martin's seemingly bizarre decision to swap bikes when the track was damp, and the profound effect it may have on the championship, the role teams play in these decisions, Pecco Bagnaia's terrible but successful weekend, and a new rising star in Moto3. And of course we have our winners and losers.

Repsol Announce End Of Honda Sponsorship After 2024
The end of the storied Repsol Honda partnership is nigh. Today, Repsol and HRC announced they will be ending their collaboration at the end of the 2024 season. Repsol will no longer be title sponsor to the factory Honda team, nor will they be a fuel partner.
The split brings to an end a long and extraordinarily successful partnership. Repsol has been title sponsor to the factory Honda squad since backing Mick Doohan, Alex Crivillé and Shinichi Itoh back in 1995. Since then, the Repsol Honda squad has racked up a grand total 183 premier class wins and 15 rider titles in 500 and MotoGP. GPC To Propose MotoGP Engine Freeze From 2025 Ahead Of Capacity Change In 2027
GPC To Propose MotoGP Engine Freeze From 2025 Ahead Of Capacity Change In 2027
Motorsport.com's Oriol Puigdemont is reporting that the Grand Prix Commission is to propose freezing engine development from the start of the 2025 MotoGP season for the next two years. The proposal is aimed at reducing costs ahead of the major engine capacity reduction, from 1000cc to 850cc, when the new set of technical regulations take force from 2027.
According to Motorsport, the proposal is to be presented at the next meeting of the Grand Prix Commission at the Emilia-Romagna GP in Misano in ten days time. The scheme would except manufacturers with concessions in Category D - currently Yamaha and Honda - allowing them to continue engine development in an attempt to catch up.

Paddock Pass Podcast Episode 435: Patreon Questions, Radio Shenanigans And The Misano Test
The Misano round of MotoGP raised lots of questions, and Neil and David try to answer at least some of them sent in by Patreon backers. First, a quick run down of the Misano test, who was trying what, and whether it was for Misano 2, the rest of 2024, or the start of 2025. Then a discussion of what the introduction of radio communication will mean for MotoGP, and whether it will change the racing. A quick look at Michelin's new front tire, and then onto questions such as whether Jorge Martin could have beaten Marc Marquez if he hadn't pulled in to swap bikes, whether there is more to Sergio Garcia's struggles than we know, and how to solve MotoGP's passport dilemma, and nurture more talent from outside of Spain and Italy.
Remember to sign up to become a Patreon Paddock Insider for a chance to win two paddock passes and of course access to the Paddock Notes show and so much extra bonus content.

2024 Misano MotoGP Test Afternoon Session Times: Bagnaia Heads GP24 Whitewash
Pecco Bagnaia has ended the Misano MotoGP test as fastest, the Ducati Lenovo rider three tenths off the outright lap record he set during qualifying ahead of the weekend. It is hard to read too much into the times, however, as the track had so much rubber on it that grip was easy to come by. Franco Morbidelli ended the day as second, while Enea Bastianini finished third fastest, ahead of Pedro Acosta on the GASGAS and Fabio Quartararo on the Yamaha.

It has been a long ten days with two surprising and exhilarating rounds at Aragon and Misano, and there's a test here on Monday. So instead of a full report, a couple of notes on the things that really mattered at Misano. There is plenty of time in the next two weeks to take a deeper look at some of the other things.
So let's start at the beginning. On Saturday night, a frisson of excitement ran through the paddock as we all received severe weather warnings on our phone for the next day. Would a massive summer storm lash the Misano World Circuit and create a topsy-turvy result? Not once you realized the warning was for all of northern Italy, which is quite a big place. The chances of heavy rain at Misano around race time were vanishingly slim.
The heavy rain didn't come, but from around 1pm onward, the leaden skies over the circuit were doing their best to convince the paddock and the packed crowds at Misano that it might. Drops of rain spattered on screens, truck roofs, umbrellas, but it never seemed to get worse than that. The race started with everyone on slicks, though a few riders had scrubbed in wets on the sighting lap.
