You may have uttered the phrases ‘someday my band score will go up’ or “some day my ship will come in’. These words are based on the idea that a stroke of luck with change our fortunes. Now wishful thinking is fine but it should be just the start. What often eludes us is knowing exactly where to start to turn things around in our lives. We need a plan and we need to take action and that’s where the ‘swimming out to meet your ship’ comes in. You can trust your life to the fickle hand of fate or rise to the challenge of taking matters into your own hands. So the phrase ‘Don’t Wait For Your Ship to Come In” means “Don’t wait around for fate or luck” and “Swim Out to Meet It” means “Decide what you want (in your case really high band) and set about taking steps to achieve it”. After wishful thinking there needs to be purposeful, decisive action. So, it means that if you want to get a high band score (7.0+), wanting is not just enough. Many people want it. In order to achieve it, do the hard work and rock it! Gotcha now? @mockTashkent

Читать полностью…My name is Simon Corcoran. I used to be an IELTS examiner, and I have taught IELTS and academic English classes for over 15 years.
I decided to focus on IELTS teaching when I realised how important this exam was in the lives of my students. I believe that a good teacher can make a huge difference in helping students to prepare for the exam effectively. I am constantly refining my teaching, and put a lot of my ideas and materials on my daily blog, ielts-simon.com.
I worked at the University of Manchester for 5 years, and left in April 2010 to spend more time running my own English courses and working on web-based projects. When I'm not teaching or blogging, you can probably find me drinking coffee somewhere on Oxford road. @mockTashkent

Читать полностью…I understand the confusion about questions like numbers 2 and 3 above. Here's an explanation of how IELTS reading works:
Question 2
The keywords here are "optimal amount", which means "the best / perfect amount". There is nothing in the passage that suggests that "10 minutes is the best amount of activity". It only says that "10 minutes OR LESS" is enough to increase pupils' attention. If the answer were "yes", the optimal amount would need to be given clearly e.g. 10 minutes is the ideal amount of exercise.
Question 3
If you're looking for EXACT synonyms, you might think that "mental stimulation" has not been mentioned. However, the word LEARN is enough here. Don't 'overthink' this - learning involves thinking, which is mental stimulation. @mockTashkent
