A Work of Genius
By the beginning of the 15th century, after a hundred years of construction, Florence Cathedral was still missing its dome. The building required an octagonal dome which would be higher and wider than any that had ever been built, with no external buttresses to keep it from spreading and falling under its own weight.
The building of such a masonry dome posed many technical problems. Filippo Brunelleschi, who is now seen as a key figure in architecture and perhaps the first modern engineer, looked to the great dome of the Pantheon in Rome for solutions. The dome of the Pantheon is a single shell of concrete, the formula for which had long since been forgotten. Soil filled with silver coins had held the Pantheon dome aloft while its concrete set. This could not be the solution in the case of the Florence Cathedral dome, due to its size. Another possible solution, the use of scaffolding, was also impractical because there was not enough timber in the whole of the region of Tuscany.
Brunelleschi would have to build the dome out of brick, due to its light weight compared to stone and being easier to form, and with nothing under it during construction. His eventual success can be attributed, in no small degree, to his technical and mathematical genius. Brunelleschi used more than four million bricks to create what is still the largest masonry dome in the world.

IELTS WRITING
Our today's focus is on coherence& cohesion in IELTS Writing (1 of the 4 assessment criteria). We'll look at the difference between linking words and phrases AND linking devices and their contribution to your writing score.
Why do you need to use linking words and phrases AND linking devices in your IELTS essay?
You should do so as they help you to guide a reader through your essay, connect ideas, sentences and paragraphs, which is VERY important if you want a high score.
Examples of linking words and phrases:
1) Firstly, bla-bla-bla
2) As a result, bla-bla-bla
3) For example, bla-bla-bla
Examples of linking devices:
1) The first reason why this happens is that bla-bla-bla.
2) This will lead to bla-bla-bla.
3) A good example to illustrate this idea is bla-bla-bla.
BUT while they have the same function, if you look at the examples above, you will see that LINKING DEVICES provide a more NATURAL FLOW of ideas. Readers will not ‘stumble over’ commas which obviously break this natural flow (look at the picture above as I tried to present this difference graphically).
So it is, of course, much better to use linking devices instead of linking words, but the difficulty here is that you will not find ready-made lists of them. You should produce them by yourself (or read a lot and pick good examples in articles and books). So if you want a 6, it is enough to use linking words and phrases. Yet if your ambition is to get a 7, 8 or even 9, this won’t be enough. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t use linking words at all to get a higher band, but you shouldn’t use too many of them. @mockTashkent
🔴 5. Don't lose attention. Remember, you will only hear the audio once. So if you didn't hear some words and passed over some questions, don't worry! Leave them blank and focus on the actual part.
🔵 6. Don't write answers too quickly. A lot of students fall into this trap: as soon as they hear the needed information, they take it for the correct answer. But sometimes this information is repeated or corrected further in the section.
🔴 7. After each section you have 30 seconds to check your answers. It is important to check spelling, plurals and word forms.
🔵 8. Transfer answers accurately. At the end of the listening test you will have 10 minutes for transferring your answers into the answer sheet.
🔴 9. Don't leave any blank answers! You won't lose marks for incorrect answers, so even if you don't know the answer it is better to write something in the answers box. @mockTashkent
