🔺1. Before the test Improve your general listening skills
🔺2. Polish your topic vocabulary. Section 3 is almost always about education. For example, students and a tutor talking about an assignment. Learn all the vocabulary you can about studying at university.
🔺3. On the test Word types. Skip over the questions and decide which type of word fits in each gap. Is it a noun, verb, adverb or adjective? Write 'N' for noun, 'V' for verb and so on. This will help you to focus on the specific word forms while listening.
🔺4. "Plug in" the situation. Try to get an idea of the situation. Before each part you will be given a short introduction: 'Now, you will hear a dialogue between…' or 'you will hear a lecture on…' This information is not written on the question paper, so be attentive. Note: who are the speakers, why are they speaking and where are they. @mockTashkent

🔺1 Ignore anything you already know about the topic and don’t make assumptions. Base your answers on the text only.
🔺2 Identify any words that qualify the statement, for example some, all, mainly, often, always and occasionally. For example, ‘Coca-Cola has always made its drinks in the U.S.A.’ has a different meaning from ‘Coca-Cola has mainly made its drinks in the U.S.A.’
🔺3 Be careful when you see verbs that qualify statements, such as suggest, claim, believe and know. For example, ‘The man claimed he was a British citizen,’ and ‘The man is a British citizen’ mean two different things.
🔺4 There will be at least one of all three answers. If you don’t have at least one ‘true’, ‘false’ or ‘not given’ you have at least one answer wrong.
🔺5 Don’t skim and scan the text to find the final answer. You will have to read the appropriate part of the text very carefully in order to understand what the author means. @mockTashkent

Read the passage and choose the correct answers to the questions below.

A new ‘super-Earth’ has been discovered that could have a life-supporting climate and water. The planet, given the catchy name HD 40307g, was discovered in a multi-world solar system 42 light years from the Sun and lies at exactly the right distance from its star to allow liquid surface water. It orbits well within the star's “habitable” or “Goldilocks” zone - the region where temperatures are neither too hot nor too cold to sustain life.

Professor Hugh Jones, from the University of Hertfordshire said: “The longer orbit of the new planet means that its climate and atmosphere may be just right to support life. Just as Goldilocks liked her porridge to be neither too hot nor too cold but just right, this planet or indeed any moons that is has lie in an orbit comparable to Earth, increasing the probability of it being habitable.” The ‘super earth’ is one of six planets believed to circle the dwarf star HD 40307 in the constellation Pictor. All the others are located outside the habitable zone, too close to their parent star to support liquid water.

IELTS Writing Task 1: line graph 'details' tips

After writing your introduction and overview paragraphs, you need to describe the information in detail. Here are my tips for describing line graph details:

1.Try to write two paragraphs. This isn't a 'rule', but it's a good idea because it forces you to group the information, and this should improve the organisation and coherence of your report. One big paragraph full of numbers can look messy, whereas two separate paragraphs will look neater and be easier to read.

2. Aim for just two or three sentences in each 'details' paragraph. Some of your sentences will be quite long, because you'll be comparing several numbers, so two sentences can sometimes be enough.

3. Always compare the lines; never describe each line separately.

Select key numbers only. You won't have time to describe every number in every year.

Start at the beginning, with the first year on the left of the x axis. Compare the numbers (i.e. all lines) in that year.

Then choose an interesting point towards the middle of the graph, and compare the figures at that point.

OR: Summarise the line trends over the first half of the period (to somewhere around the middle of the graph).

Then start a new paragraph for the second half of the time period.

Compare the figures for all of the lines at any key points. Or summarise the line trends over the second half of the period.

Finish at the end, with the last year shown. Compare the numbers (i.e. all lines) in that year.

Here's a short version of the advice above:

Paragraph 3
Compare the lines (giving numbers) in the first year shown, then describe any significant numbers or overall trends in the first half of the time period.

Paragraph 4
Describe any significant numbers or overall trends in the second half of the time period, then compare the lines (giving numbers) in the last year shown. @mockTashkent
